CHAPTER 1
Olivia
One of the best parts about going out when you’re staying at a hotel and have only packed for 2 days is that you really don’t have to waste much time trying to figure out what to wear.
With my choices limited to my jeans and a white t-shirt, all I have to do is fuss over my hair. I hadn’t even packed makeup because who needs one to go hiking? But my hair was always a point of frustration for me.
On one hand, I know it’s gorgeous and many women would kill to have my long, strawberry blonde hair. But on the other, it’s so annoying. It’s straight and refuses to curl, but it also won’t stay actually straight either. I have a lot of hair, and it’s always all puffed up and has these weird kinks all over the place.
Usually, I just throw it up in a ponytail or messy bun, but when I go out – especially when I go out with Sarah – I try to make it look half decent. So I borrowed her straight iron to try to tame it, but of course, it’s not doing anything I tell it to.
I sigh and give up. Shouting through the bathroom door, I check to see how Sarah’s doing.
“You almost ready yet?” I holler. The girl is naturally gorgeous, but she takes a while to get herself all prepped and ready to go.
Whenever we go out people think we’re sisters and I can see why. We do look similar – it’s our smiles, I think. We both have these huge, straight smiles thanks to our parents forcing us to be metal mouths for years in elementary school. We’ve been friends that long. That might have even been one of the first miseries that we bonded over, making us as close as sisters.
Growing up together I guess it shouldn’t be surprising that we have a similar style too. She has long jet-black hair though, and it always looks perfect. And she definitely has more or a party girl personality than I do. I prefer nature to busy bars or clubs.
Which is why we’re here in the first place. Tomorrow we’re setting out on a beautiful 11-mile hike through Elk Creek Falls in Colorado.
Since moving to Denver 5 months ago, all I’ve wanted to do is get out of the city and explore some of the mountains this state is so famous for. And finally, finally, I get to go exploring.
Sarah agreed to come with me, which is crazy exciting because we haven’t seen as much of each other since I moved and she stayed put in our tiny little Utah hometown.
Everyone was surprised that it was me who moved away first, given Sarah’s slightly more wild side. Most people think Utah’s a totally dry state, which it isn’t, but it also isn’t the place to be if you want to spend a lot of your early 20s climbing up on bars to dance.
But it was my job that offered me a position in Denver. She’s been searching for one ever since, and we’re both really hoping that she finds something soon. But until then, a weekend hike is what we’ll have to accept.
Since I know she’s just doing the hike for my benefit, I agreed to go out and find a local pub to pass a few hours at tonight. It’s not necessarily my scene, but it’s the least I can do. And I’m actually looking forward to it. We always have a good time when we go out. Sarah really is a fun person to just spend time with.
I knock on the door to try to hurry her up.
“Yup, yeah!” she yells. “I’m almost ready!”
I can’t help but laugh, figuring this means I probably have another 20 minutes to wait. I settle down on the bed with my new camera to play with some settings. I’m hoping to get some good practice in tomorrow and maybe come away from the weekend with some nice shots of deer, and if I’m lucky maybe some big horned sheep or a black bear or something. All of the above should stay nicely at a distance, which is why I have a good lens to work with.
I hear the door open finally and look up to see Sarah.
Her jaw drops when she sees me and I burst out laughing.
“We’ve done it again!” she cries, looking horrified.
“Come on, don’t worry about it,” I get up quickly and start hurrying her towards the door. “It’s just a small-town local pub. I’m guessing we won’t be the only girls there in jeans and white t-shirts.” I’m still laughing. We’ve accidentally twinned again, which Sarah hates.
I don’t want to wait another hour as she figures out something new to wear though, so I practically push her out the door. She didn’t pack as light as I did and who knows how many options she’s got in that suitcase of hers.
Luckily she doesn’t argue, and we head down to the lobby to ask where the best place to grab a drink is.
“There’s just the one pub,” the receptionist says. “Just turn right and walk for about 2 blocks. You can’t miss it.”
“Thanks,” I smile at the young man and head out the door with Sarah in tow.
“Just one pub?” she sighs dramatically. “I thought I was finally going to see what it was like to go out in a proper city!”
“This isn’t a proper city,” I laugh. “It’s just a tiny town, not Denver. Don’t worry though, you’ll be living there soon enough.”
I reassure her and we walk the 2 blocks, arms linked.
The guy was right, we couldn’t have missed it. For a small town, the one pub is busy. And loud. Sarah is positively giddy. I’m a little less so, but happy for her. We find our way to the bar and order a couple of beers while we scope out the place.
“This isn’t so bad,” Sarah says, looking around. “The men here sure are different from the boys back home…”
She’s not wrong, I think as I glance around. They’re different from the men I’ve met in Denver too. They’re more…manly here. There’s a lot of flannel and plaid, tattoos and work boots. You can tell this is a logging town.
I know the industry has been hit hard in the last few years but looking around here you wouldn’t know it.
I glance at Sarah and she’s smiling flirtatiously at a guy sitting across the bar. She doesn’t waste time, this girl.
Neither does the guy. It only takes him one swig of his drink to get up and come over. He’s good looking but way too cocky for my tastes. You can practically smell his arrogance from a mile away, but Sarah likes that kind of thing.
She’s already giggling and slapping his arm, which of course he’s flexing to the best of his ability.
Suddenly Toby Keith starts playing and Sarah jumps up in excitement. She loves Toby Keith. She looks at me with her arms out, begging me with her eyes to go dance with her.
“Why don’t you two go dance,” I suggest nodding towards the guy, “and I’ll order us a couple more drinks.”
“Are you sure?” she asks, looking part worried and part excited. I know she doesn’t want to ditch me, but she’s clearly having a good time with th
is guy.
“Yeah,” I answer with as much enthusiasm as I can come up with. “Of course! Go dance.” I smile wide and nod my head.
It doesn’t take much to convince them, and they’re out on the floor grinding in seconds. I chuckle to myself and signal the bartender for 2 more beers.
I really don’t mind. I’m not exactly anti-social, but I’m also not much for crowds. I’m much more content to sit here at the bar by myself and let her go out and get her dance on.
As the bartender delivers the 2 beers, someone sits down on the other side of me. I glance over and can’t help but stare in surprise a bit. He is the largest man I think I’ve ever been so close to. I’ve heard people being described as ‘a bear of a man’ but I’ve never seen one for myself. This guy is big. Not fat, but just big. Like a bear.
I try not to be super conspicuous as I check him out, a little awe-struck. He’s hot, I find myself thinking. I didn’t know I’d be into this lumberjack look, but it definitely works for him. He fits in well here – in a plaid blue button-up shirt. He actually looks pretty stylish, in a woodsman kind of way.
His hair and beard are certainly on trend for the moment. On anyone else, I would say hipster, but it just sounds laughable to apply that term to someone so masculine and, well, huge.
He’s got a little ginger in him, which I also find attractive, though I’m a little surprised when I realize it. I know redheaded women are all the rage these days (lucky me), but I’ve always thought it must be hard to be a man with red hair. He pulls it off though. Quite well. And I can’t imagine anyone making fun of him, in any case.
Suddenly, Sarah pops up beside me, dragging her new friend behind her.
“Let’s do shots,” she bounces up and down.
“Ha!” I respond. “Not this girl, and you know it! I’m just fine with my beer, thank you very much.”
Sarah pouts but doesn’t argue. She’s used to me by now. She orders 4 shots of Jager and her cowboy and she do them in quick succession.
“Don’t forget our hike tomorrow,” I smile and remind her. She just nods happily and heads back out to the dance floor.
“She’s going to hurt tomorrow,” I mutter to myself as I sip responsibly on my beer.
“Where are you hiking?” a deep voice interrupts my thoughts and I jump a little, glancing over at the man beside me.
“Sorry,” he dips his head apologetically, “I didn’t mean to startle you.”
I laugh at myself. “No, no that’s fine. I was just lost in thought, is all. We’re heading up to see Elk Falls,” I answer. “I’ve heard it’s beautiful up there, have you been?”
“Oh,” he starts, “I’ve not done the hike, exactly, but I think I’ve covered just about every inch of these mountains over the years, at some point or other. The falls are nice, you’ll like them.”
Something about the way he talks makes me smile. I’m usually pretty wary around strange men, but he seems safe somehow, despite – or maybe because of? – his size.
“I’m Olivia,” I put out my hand towards him.
He chuckles and takes it, making my hand seem suddenly tiny inside his enormous paw. “Jaxon,” he answers.
Jaxon turns out to be a really nice guy, and we spend the next half hour chatting away. I keep laughing, and I honestly can’t figure out if I really think he’s as funny as all that, or if I’m turning into one of those girls who just laughs at everything the cute guy says. Either way, I can’t stop myself.
We’re lost in conversation when the bartender comes over and interrupts us. He points at Sarah out on the dance floor.
I gasp and jump up. I haven’t been paying attention, but at some point over the past half hour, she has gotten herself very drunk. She’s being held up by her dance partner, barely, and still trying to do her little sexy dance.
I look over at Jaxon, disappointed to have to end our conversation, but I’m worried about Sarah. “I’m so sorry, Jaxon, but I think I’m going to have to take Sarah back to the hotel. She’s not looking too good right now.”
He nods and makes a gesture like tipping a hat. “Of course,” he agrees, “go take care of your friend. It was nice to meet you, Olivia.”
Something about the way he says my name makes my stomach do a little flip-flop and I’m even more bummed that I have to leave. “You too,” I answer with a sincere smile.
My smile turns to a grimace quickly though, as I trudge out to the dance floor to collect Sarah. She puts up a meager fight about having to leave and then starts professing her undying love for me, as we make our way back to our hotel room.
Oh yeah, I think to myself, she’s going to hurt tomorrow.
CHAPTER 2
Jaxon
It’s too early for civilized folk to be awake so, even though I’ve already showered and groomed, I’m dosing on my couch as the sun tries to peak through the clouds outside.
A pounding at my door jolts me awake.
“God damn Nathan,” I mutter to myself, “Can’t he knock like a normal person? Does he have to try to break my bloody door down?”
I stretch as I lift my 6’4” tired body off the couch and amble down the hall to answer the door.
I open it up and there’s Nathan, grinning and leaning against the doorframe, sharing some private joke with himself. Why’s this guy always gotta smile all the time?
“Hey bud,” he claps my shoulder. “You ready to go?”
“Yeah, yeah,” I yawn. “Let me just go grab my bag.” I leave him at the door and head in to grab my duffle bag.
It’s all I’m taking with me for an entire month out in the woods with Nathan. It’s a good thing I’m a pretty simple guy – a few warm flannel shirts, some jeans, plenty of underwear and, most importantly, my grooming tools. I don’t care if no one is going to see me but Nathan, a man’s beard needs always be groomed.
I throw my bag over my shoulder and head out to meet my partner.
We’ve been felling trees together for close to 5 years now. We’ve got a good working relationship, but it’s not what you’d call close. You’d think after spending so much time together, just the two of us locked up in a cabin in the woods for so many years, we’d be like brothers. Or best friends, at least.
But we’re not. We’re…I don’t really know. It’s hard to explain. I trust him with my life, and feel completely at ease with him, but when our season’s up? Neither of us reaches out to stay in touch. There’s always been this unnamed feeling between us that there’s a line we don’t cross.
We’re cool. We’re good. But we’re also closed off a bit.
I don’t know why. I can’t say I’ve ever tried to change it though. I’m pretty happy the way things are. When I’m not working, I don’t do much anyways, and I like it that way.
When not working in the woods, I spend most of my nights watching MMA or racing and, when there’s nothing on, I head down to the pub.
I’m not a big drinker, but it’s a good place to relax with a beer. Get the feeling like there are other people in the world. Then I go home.
Last night was an unusual experience for me. I don’t usually talk to anyone at the pub, let alone gorgeous women. But something about Olivia just made it easy…
“So, how’d your night turn out,” Nathan breaks into my daydreaming as we both take our places in the truck and buckle up.
“Ah, it was alright. Just went down to the pub.” I’m not sure if I want to tell Nathan everything. He’s kind of excitable – there’s no telling what he’ll do with the information.
“I heard. I got a call from Steve last night. He thought I should come down to witness the miracle,” he looks over at me, waggling his eyebrows and splitting his face into that shit-eating grin of his.
I don’t say anything.
“Come on, Jax,” he persists, “You met someone! Steve said you talked to her all night. What happened buddy? I need some details!”
He’s like a dog with a
bloody bone. Damn Steve and his big mouth. What’d he have to go and call Nathan for, like it’s some big deal that I have a conversation with another person?
“Yeah,” I admit, “I chatted with a chick for a while. Her friend was getting drunk and disorderly on the dance floor, so I was just someone to fill the time with.”
“Oh, come on now,” Nathan shakes his head in disbelief. “I don’t believe that for one second. Steve said she was practically hanging off of you. Tell me you took her home…”
I don’t want to answer. Obviously, I had thought about taking her home. I had thought about the very long month that would consist of just me and Nathan and our rough, calloused hands.
But her friend had been so drunk, there was no question of her coming home with me.
“Naw,” I finally cave into Nathan’s stares and elbowing. “As I said, her friend was pretty drunk. She had to take her home. Well…to their hotel. She’s from Denver, just in the area for some big hike or something.” I shrug as if it doesn’t mean anything to me.
As if I didn’t spend a good hour last night fantasizing about exactly what it would have been like if I had taken her home.
“Damn, Jax, that’s unfortunate. It would have been nice to let off some steam before our month in the woods.” Nathan sighs dramatically. “That’s the only part of this job that doesn’t get any easier. No offense dude, you’re a handsome man and everything, but I do miss the ladies while we’re roughin’ it.”
I grunt in agreement.
Nathan’s pretty used to my limited conversational skills so he just reaches over and cranks the tunes. Blake Shelton fills the air between us.
I have to admit, I was born to be a lumberjack. I like the solitary life, the physical work, and the all-or-nothing schedule. It suits me.
By the time I was 14, I was already over 6’ tall and I’ve never been anything but beefy. My beard came in thick and full before I was out of high school and the current trends are basically tailor-made for me. I was getting beard grooming tools for birthday presents, so I learned the value of a good groom early on.
