  ‘Thanks for tonight,’ he said, as Granddad walked him to the front door. ‘I think I needed it.’

  ‘Anytime,’ said Granddad. ‘I’m always here if you need me. Don’t forget that.’

  ‘I won’t,’ said Trev.

  Granddad opened the door. Trev winced at the cold air and moved to go outside, looking down at his feet to make sure he didn’t fall down the steep front step. He squinted. There was something sitting on the step. A ball of orange fluff.

  ‘What’s that?’ said Granddad.

  The ball squirmed, and Trev took a step back before realising that it was a kitten. It turned its head to look at him and he saw that it had one green eye and one blue eye.

  ‘Are you two jokers going to let me in, or what?’ the kitten said. ‘I’m freezing my bollocks off out here.’
