Death on the Rhine Page 20

by Charles Whiting

Though he had ‘adventured’ (as he put it) all over Europe, illegally running guns to the new Poland on behalf of the British Secret Service, helping to prevent the massacre of the Greeks in Turkey during the Turco-Greek War, he had never been closer to failing a mission as when he had come up against the beautiful and fanatical Fraulein von Duckwitz. Right to the bitter end, she had almost fooled him and his shipmates of the Swordfish. It was only in the nick of time that Common Smith VC, was able to foil the plot, which would have helped Hitler to power in 1923 and not ten years later in 1933.

That ten-year difference saved Britain, and Europe, from perpetual Nazi domination, which would have probably lasted to this very day. Sixteen years of Nazi power in Germany instead of six would have given the Third Reich an absolutely unstoppable war machine in 1939 at the outbreak of World War Two. Britain – and Europe – in the 1990s have a lot to thank Common Smith VC for.
