“Is this our patient?” He smiled at Oceana, before looking at Martha.

She glanced at Oceana, then down at the floor, before nodding.

“All right, then, let’s get to it,” he said and approached Oceana.

She looked to Martha. “Martha, what’s going on?”

The maid bit her lip as her face began to turn red. “They said you were sick.”

  “I’m not sick,” Oceana shouted.

The man nodded. “You won’t be after this.” He grabbed her head and jerked it to the side.

  “I’m not sick!” she repeated.

“You’ll feel just a little pain,” he replied.

  “I’m not sick.”

“Just a pinch. Here it comes.”

  “I’m not sick.”

He inserted the syringe into Oceana’s temple.

  “No,—“

She became still. Her eyes glazed over and she slumped into the bed.

Martha grabbed her hand and wept. “Lady Oceana? Lady Oceana?”

The man in all white grabbed Oceana’s other hand. He squeezed.

“Sometimes you have to keep them down, Ma’am,” he said. “Sometimes you just have to keep them down.”

  About the Author

NATASHA D. LANE IS a friend of most things caffeinated, a lover of books, and a writing warrior to her core. As a big believer in the idea that “the pen is mightier than the sword,” she graduated from Juniata College in 2015 with hopes of becoming a journalist. While she still holds on to that dream, after spending some time in the corporate world and then completing a year of service, she decided it was time to return to publishing. Her first fantasy novel “The Pariah Child & the Ever-Giving Stone” is set to release March 22, 2018. If there were a single piece of advice Natasha could give to young writers, it’d be this: Write your way through life.
