Lights, Camera, Christmas! Page 8

by J. D. Light

"Uh." Declan blinked up at me as we made our way to the edge of the ice, shrugging. "Because they get cold digging wells?"

I smirked, shaking my head. "They have machines for that shit."

He frowned, sitting his rented skates on a large rock before taking a seat. "Hmm… Maybe they mean his ass is cold because he doesn't get any action. Well diggers must not like butt sex."

I dropped next to him chuckling. "Butt sex?"

"If you can't say it, you can't have it," he batted his eyes, pouting his bottom lip out, and I nearly leaned forward and pulled it into my mouth. "Poor well diggers. They don't know what they're missing."

"Times have changed," I said, tilting my head reasonably. "We're spreading our wings in this world. There are probably well diggers out there having all the butt sex they can handle."

He nodded, his eyes going ridiculously wide. "Oh, so you think well diggers get around, huh? Suddenly being a baker/trinket maker doesn't seem so glamorous. I think I'm going to go freeze my ass off with some well diggers."

Glaring, I pulled him close, nipping at what little skin I could get to under his layers of clothing right at the corner of his jaw. "I don't think so. You can just stay here and freeze your ass off with me."

He pursed his lips like he was thinking really hard about his options. "Will there be butt sex?"

"All the butt sex you can handle."

"Yeah, score for the baker." He threw a fist in the air dramatically before lacing and tying his second skate, bracing his hands on the rock to push up before blinking and lowering himself back down. "I don't actually know how to ice skate. You know that, right?"

I stood quickly, reaching out a hand and pulling him to his feet, waiting until he was steady. "I'll help you."

We made our way slowly to the ice, careful not to fall.

"How do you know how to ice skate." He asked when we reached the edge, holding on tight as I eased him out onto the ice before bending and having him lift his leg while holding on to my shoulders so I could remove his blade guards.

"I'm going to ignore how you made that sound so incredibly condescending."

I bent to remove my own, letting him continue to use me as a balance point, even though I was the one standing on one leg and he had the two. I was still the more stable one of us.

"I just mean… Don't you have people for that?" he asked, chuckling when I stood, glaring at him.

"I lived in Canada for like five years. I don't know if you realize this, but it gets cold here. Ice skating is one of the best ways to spend the cold months."

"My balls have noticed how fucking cold it is."

"I'll warm them up later." He shuddered at the way I dropped my voice low as I leaned close

"Hmm," he said, reaching down to press the heel of his hand against the front of his pants, but I wasn't sure how much that even helped considering how many layers he was wearing. "Even this freezing-ass weather is no match for Blake Sunday."

I chuckled, grabbing his hand and dragging him to the spot I'd been planning to bring him to the whole time, my heart thundering hard in my chest as we approached it… well, we were going slow as hell, but it felt like before I knew it, I was pulling us to a stop.

He did the awkward stop-go jerk that usually made me laugh at people, but I couldn't even enjoy it properly, because my heart was beating so fast.

He accidentally spun in a small circle as I let go of him, fishing in my pocket, my fingers brushing velvet as I lowered myself to one knee while his back was to me.

"If I fall on my dick and drill a hole in this ice, you're catching our dinner," he said, awkwardly making his way back around.

He blinked down at me, looking concerned, and even taking a couple of horrible steps in my direction before nearly falling. "Are you okay?" I reached out a hand, guiding his palm to my shoulder to steady him as I pulled the velvet box from my pocket. What… what?" he whispered, his eyes going huge.

"I've been a lot of places over the years, and have met a lot of people, but I knew from the very first time we drove through Hidden Springs, that there was something about that place that was going to change my life…" I popped the box open, revealing two matching gold bands with a scrolled design down the center that turned out to be interlacing snowflakes if you leaned in close. "And then I walked into an adorable little shop and watched the most spectacular man I'd ever seen… offer me a big one, and I suddenly realized why the town was so fucking special."

My throat clogged, and I had to clear it as the tears building in his bright green eyes spilled over the rim of his lower lid as my own eyes pricked. "The truth is, it doesn't matter in what town, in what city, in what climate it was in, you are the one who has changed my life forever. The idea of being anywhere you aren't physically hurts, and being able to live in Hidden Springs with you makes all the hard work and emotional and physical exhaustion I’ve endured until then absolutely worth it."

I took a deep breath as a tear of my own slid down my cheek. I was so ridiculously in love with this man. "Will you marry me, Deck?"

He tried to speak, but no sound came out, so he settled for nodding and I stood quickly, pulling him into my arms and kissing him hard, feeling blessed and happy, and not at all worthy of this perfect man.

I got so lost in the kiss, I nearly forgot an important part of the whole thing. Reaching back into my pocket, I pulled something else out, slipping it into the back pocket of his jeans, then wrapped my arms around him completely, kissing the fuck out of him.

I didn't know if the photographer I'd hired was still taking pictures or not, but when I pulled back, I slipped the ring on my gorgeous fiancé's finger, admiring how perfect he looked being mine before slipping my own on, wanting everyone to know that I was his and he was mine.

I led him off the ice, smiling like an idiot as I bent to put the guards back on his skates and then mine, and then helped him up onto the rock.

My phone went off with a text just as he lowered himself to the ground, frowning slightly as he reached behind him, pulling the pride flag out of his back pocket, smiling down at it and then up at me in confusion.

"What's this?" he asked as I opened the message containing a picture and the question, How about this?

I glanced up at the tree line, trying to see him, but he must have been hidden pretty good, because it truly looked like we were alone out here.

  Me: Perfect.

Bending down next to Declan, I turned the phone around, showing him the picture, chuckling softly when his eyes widened, and he jerked the phone from my hand. "Oh shit," he whispered in shock. "It's just like my snow globe."
