The Wolf's Concubine

“Pardon me,” Helen said, stepped back, flustered.

The other woman raised an eyebrow at Helen, lifted her chin, and backed away.

Helen narrowly missed dropping her coffee cup when her eyes met the other woman’s. There was something familiar about the woman. Helen searched her features, trying to figure out what. The other woman had sharp cheekbones, a long, straight nose, and full lips shaped like a cupid’s bow. A high forehead, large, round eyes, and a kinky mass of black hair.

“Do I know you?” Helen sputtered, shaking her head at the tall, dark woman with the arresting features and taking a shaky step back.

Because Helen realized where she’d seen her before.

In her mirror, every morning. But this woman was as dark as Helen was pale. As black-haired as Helen was blonde. The eyes, nose, lips, cheekbones. All Helen’s, but a carbon copy of Helen. Like there was a mold made, and Helen had been cast in white chocolate, and this other woman, cast in dark chocolate.

“Do you know me?” This dark doppelganger asked, her lip curled in a sneer, sarcasm dripping from every word. “Why don’t you tell me? Do you know me?”

What the hell was going on?

Helen looked around the small café. It was mid-afternoon, and the space was deserted, save for the service bot.

Helen turned to get the hell out of there. The dark woman blocked her path.

“Let me go!” Helen exclaimed, gripping the coffee cup and attempting to sidestep the other woman. But the woman wouldn’t let her get away.

“No!” the other woman bit out in a harsh whisper. “I won’t let you go.”

The counter bot began to bleat, “Do you require assistance, Ms. Castellano?”

“Say no,” the woman hissed at her. Helen recovered from her initial shock. Her eyes roamed over the other woman’s face in a kind of wonder.

“I’m fine!” Helen blurted. The counter bot turned away.

Everything she had planned to do with the rest of her day was forgotten. The other woman steered Helen to the table where her hoodie and coffee cup were. Helen, limbs numb but brain active, trying to comprehend, allowed herself to be slid into the chair.

“Who—” Helen started to speak, but again, the other woman shushed her.

“I think it’s pretty obvious, don’t you? I’m your goddamn daughter.”
