“I know,” he responds, leaning down a little closer to her as his gaze travels between her eyes and lips. Her eyes are a crystal blue, like ice, and they hypnotize Fallen, keeping him trapped in her gaze.
Nevaeh stares back at him lost in his dark orbs that swirl with red. She leans closer to him, close enough to feel his breath across her face.
“What’s your plan?” she asks.
“I don’t have one,” he replies, as he tilts his head to the side. He lifts his hand to Nevaeh’s face and runs his finger along her cheek, then palms it.
Nevaeh leans into his touch. Her eyelashes flutter as Fallen rubs his thumb under her eye. They stare at each other with longing glances and pain-filled eyes.
“I miss you,” Nevaeh whispers.
“I know,” Fallen whispers back.
“Come home,” she requests.
Fallen leans down, pressing his lips to hers. She reaches up placing her arms around his neck, pulling him tighter. Their mouths moved together like a dance as he deepens the kiss. Nevaeh opens to him, accepting him inside without hesitation. Lost in a toe curling kiss the two make out like teenagers, or starved lovers, before Fallen pushes back and breaks the spell.
He leans his forehead against hers, gazing deep into her eyes.
“I can’t,” he whispers.
“Yes, you can, Fallen,” she whispers back. “You just won’t.”
Fallen breaks his hold on her and begins pacing back and forth.
“You don’t understand. We don’t work that way.” He stops pacing and faces her. “You can’t possibly understand.” He glares at her, pain etched in his features.
“Help me understand,” she says, as she walks toward him, her hands raised as she attempts to touch his face.
He backs away quickly. “You can’t possibly—”
“Try,” she cries out.
“I can’t,” he deadpans, taking a few steps back. “I just can’t.”
“But I lov—”
“Don’t,” he warns.
“But—”
“No,” he roars.
“Commander? Commander? Are you there?” the voice in Nevaeh’s head calls out.
Defeat crosses her features hearing the voice. “I’m here,” she answers.
“Okay good. We thought we lost you,” the voice at headquarters responds.
She gives Fallen a quizzical glance.
He moves to her side and leans his head toward her ear.
“Your channel went quite for a minute and we thought something had happened,” the voice at headquarters confirms.
“How long did we lose communications?” Nevaeh asks.
“A few minutes. Why?” the dispatchers ask.
Nevaeh glances at Fallen who has a look of complete concentration across his features as he stretches his hearing in order to listen.
“Is your pick-up still awake and talking?” dispatch asks.
“No, headquarters. There’s been an issue,” Nevaeh explains. “I’ll report when I return.”
“Okay, commander. We’ll see you soon,” dispatch confirms.
“Yes, headquarters. Over and out.”
Nevaeh turns to Fallen.
“They know nothing,” she says.
“So, I heard,” he confirms.
“Time stopped, Fallen. How could time stop?” she asks, astonished.
“Because you were right,” he says, as he takes several steps away from her, essentially turning his back to her.
“About what?” Nevaeh asks.
“It was the realm of lost souls,” he responds. “That’s the only place time stands still.”
Nevaeh walks over and places his hand on his back.
“You know what this means, right?” she asks.
“Yeah,” he sighs, then turns to face her. “It means he’s out. He’s back on earth. There’s no stopping him now.”
“What are you going to do?”
Fallen scrubs his hands over his face.
“I don’t know.” He expels a huge breath of air. “He’s not going to like this.” He glances down, then back up to Nevaeh.
Nevaeh peers up at Fallen, a smirk across her lips as she leans closer to him.
She covers the side of her mouth with one of her hands as if she’s telling him a secret. “Neither’s she,” she whispers.
They both burst out laughing. They laugh long and hard bending at the waist and leaning over, placing their hands on their knees. They continue to laugh for a few moments before Nevaeh straightens up, wipes the tears escaping her eyes.
Fallen follows suit. He gazes at Nevaeh a deep longing in his gaze.
“You want to come with me?” He smirks.
“Yes,” she says as she grasps his hand, holding it between hers. “I want to come with you so bad.”
Fallen peers down at her and smiles wide. “But?”
“You know what?” she responds, as she drops his hand and takes a step back.
“It’s not as bad as you think, you know,” he smirks at her.
“That’s encouraging,” Nevaeh giggles.
“You know what I mean,” he responds, a serious tone in his voice.
“Yes,” she peeks over at him. “I know what you mean. But I still wish you would come home.”
He closes the distance between them, scooping her up in his arms and burying his face in her neck. He breaths in her scent deeply, then presses his lips against her temple. He pulls back and stares at her.
“I know you do and maybe one day—”
Nevaeh throws her arms around his neck and pulls him closer to her. She buries her face into his shoulder. “Don’t say it,” she whispers. “Please, don’t make promises you can’t keep.”
“Okay,” he whispers back. “I have to go.”
Fallen can feel a tugging in his soul. The pull of his kind attempting to wrench him back home. He resisted for as long as possible, but the influence is getting deeper, and more difficult to ignore. He gathers his strength to hang on for a few more minutes.
“I miss you, too,” he admits. “Someday, Nevaeh. Someday, I’m coming—”
“Don’t say it. Please, don’t,” she peeks up at him. “Let’s just leave it like this. Go, before I can’t let you,” she whispers as she releases him and steps back.
“Just go, Fallen,” she waves him on.
Fallen steps back, his wings spring out of his back, they shutter expanding to their full size. A red glow envelope’s him and the glow becomes very bright surrounding him. He’s beautiful, glorious, downright magnificent. His dark hair falls in front of one eye, the other eye dark with red swirls moving in the orb. His chest presses against his black tee shirt practically bursting the seams. His long legs are swathed in tight black jeans that seem to go on forever and his feet are jammed into black combat boots. He gives Nevaeh a sly smirk, his lips a perfect shade of red blending perfectly with his pale white skin. He’s everything she’s ever wanted and more, but everything she can never have.
She smiles back at him as he shimmers in and out of existence. Fallen speaks the words Nevaeh has waited lifetimes to hear.
“I love you,” he whispers, then disappears.
Nevaeh rubs the space on her chest where a constant ache exists as golden teardrops roll down her cheeks. They roll off the bottom of her chin, and finally splash onto the ground.
Her thoughts turn to her predicament, how she’s never been able to say or do what her heart most desires. Giving up everything she wanted because of her beliefs is something she’s lived with since she can remember, but it wasn’t always this way. Somehow everything got turned upside down and twisted, but there’s no going back and she must live with the decision she made so long ago. She wishes it were different, that they were all different, but sadly, it wasn’t to be. So, she’ll continue on her journey because that’s her calling.
She stares at the spot Fallen disappeared for a few moments, then wipes her cheeks dry and shudders her shoulders. Her wings expand to their full length an
d flutter twice. She closes her eyes and shimmers out of existence. In the distance a soft breath whispers, “I love you, too.”
The area is still, silent—empty.
