  “Have you thought this through?”

“I wouldn’t be here if I hadn’t.” While meticulously hanging her clothes in the closet, Arin sneakily hid a present she had brought with her behind a shoebox.

“I mean, really, really thought it out?”

Sighing loudly, Arin turned to face her friend. “Yes, Jewell. For the thousandth and one time, I have thought it out.” She sat on her friend’s bed and stared at her in earnest. “I’ve been letting my divorce with Marcus affect me longer than our marriage lasted.”

“If Marcus had done to me what he did to you, I wouldn’t have been able to jump back in the dating pool either. He shredded your confidence. You just needed time to rebuild it again.” Jewell affectionately tried to excuse the boring existence she had been living since her disaster of a marriage had ended.

“The problem is that I want to jump in on my own terms. The men I’ve gone out with think they’re going to run all over me like Marcus did because of my weight. Or, because of it, I should just lay down and spread my legs to them. They’re disgusting. And, no matter how nice I think a guy is, when I meet them, within one date, their true colors show. I can’t keep blaming them for their behavior when I have to change mine.

“I’ve lost forty pounds. Now all I need to do is build my confidence back. That’s why I need one of The Last Riders.”

“I’m willing to share my smorgasbord of men with you, but why not with one of the men you dated or pick someone where you live?”

“I’ve only dated a few men that my friends fixed me up with, and I’d rather not have my friends know I’m a dud in the bedroom if I’m as bad at sex as Marcus says I am.”

“There are dating apps for this, you know?”

“I’m afraid of them. What if I swipe on a Bundy or a Gein? I’m afraid my body parts will be disposed of in a two-mile radius. You know I’m a coward where my safety is concerned. I don’t want to have look under his mattress for a hacksaw before I let him take my bra off. This is the best place that I can think of that I can get back on track and be safe.”

“The men might fuck you to death, but they’ll leave your body to be found,” Jewell joked, getting off the bed to go to her closet, and pulling on a pair of boots.

“As long as they don’t say they’d rather fuck a sex doll, then I’m up for anything.” Arin was proud of how sure she sounded. Marcus had never loved her. He had used her love for him as bargaining chips to coerce her to do anything that he wanted. In return, he’d stripped away any pride, vanity, and self-love she had until the only thing remained was a shell of the care-free loving woman she had been.

Her and Jewell had been friends since high school, and there wasn’t much they didn’t know about each other. When they had parted ways after high school—when she had married Marcus and had moved away with him to North Carolina—they’d remained close, despite his objections. They spoke on the phone several times a week, and Jewell visited her twice a year, blatantly ignoring Marcus’s efforts to sabotage their relationship. When Arin had divorced, she moved back to Ohio. Her friend had been there to help her to pick up the pieces and rebuild a new life. Arin owed her a debt she would never be able to repay. When Jewell moved to Kentucky from Ohio, Arin had felt her loss more than the dissolution of her marriage. While Jewell usually came to Ohio to see her during vacations, this was the first time Arin had taken her up on the invitation to stay with her.

The last dating fiasco she had endured wasn’t the only reason she’d accepted Jewell’s invitation. She’d been trying to convince Jewell to come to work for her since her business had taken off. So far, though, Jewell had refused. Arin was determined to convince her friend to leave her job working for the Last Riders as a manager of their factory and move back to Ohio. She had even tried to convince her that since The Last Riders had their original club there, she didn’t have to leave them totally behind. Jewell would still be able to participate in the sexual activities with the bikers, which she made no excuses about enjoying. Arin couldn’t blame her; in fact, the sexual encounters Jewell constantly bragged about was why she was there.

“Are you sure you don’t want to go into town with us?” Tugging her coat on, Jewell looked hesitant to leave. “I hate to leave just when you got here, but I need to get my naughty Santa presents. None of us have had time since we’ve had to work overtime. But the game starts tomorrow.”

Arin waved Jewell’s concern away. “Go. I’ll probably fix myself a snack in the kitchen then take a nap while you’re gone. We’ll catch up when you get back.”

  “You sure?”

“Positive.” Jumping off the bed, Arin grabbed her friend in a hug. “Thank you for inviting me. I hate spending Christmas alone.”

Jewell hugged her back. “You don’t see any of your friends during the holidays?”

“Most of them are married, too busy, or have gone home for a visit. You’re saving me from being alone.” Arin didn’t tell her that she only had a couple of people whom she could call friends, if that. She had a feeling both of them invited her into their circle because they felt sorry for her. She’d always been a loner who others felt sorry for, something Marcus had taken advantage of.

Her marriage had been a disaster from the get-go. The sex between them before they had married had been okay, but once the ring had been put on her finger, it had become something to avoid until she and Marcus would end up arguing over it until she gave in just to end the insults he would shout at her.

It wasn’t like she hadn’t wanted to have sex with him; it was the uncomplimentary jabs layered with the way he liked to have sex that she had tried to avoid. He had wanted her to do all the work in bed with him touching her as little as possible. He hated her breasts, and no matter how much weight she had lost to make him happy, her breasts just became more pronounced. Finally, when she was never going to be able to satisfy him, and he certainly had no intention of fulfilling her needs, she had packed her suitcases after their last night together and had moved out. He had demeaned her one too many times during and after sex, which had left her hating herself for giving in to the cruel barbs to get her to agree. She detested herself for letting him walk all over her. As
far as she was concerned, his ridiculing ass could find the woman of his dreams that he’d constantly told her she wasn’t. She hoped he found her, all one hundred and one pounds of her, and Arin hoped she wouldn’t give him the time of day—much like Marcus behaved toward her. He hadn’t even cared enough to call. Not only that, he’d changed the locks in case she’d wanted to go back for her things. She hadn’t. Arin had left her marriage with the clothes on her back and what had been packed in one suitcase.

The dissolution of her marriage had given her the incentive to do everything Marcus had warned her against. She had quit her nine-to-five job and had started her own business. She picked her own clothes out, ones that exposed her generous cleavage, wore makeup that he swore made her look like a whore, and regularly bought a box of chocolates to keep on the counter just so she could have one anytime she wanted.

Jewell released her to search her expression with an astute gaze. “Marcus isn’t up to his old tricks, is he?”

“No! I promised you I would tell you if he was.”

“If I find out he’s been mouthing off to you again and you haven’t told me, I swear, Arin, I’m going to take the Christmas present I got you back.”

“That’s not a real threat until I know what it is.”

Jewell stepped away to grab her purse. “Nope. You’re not going to trick me into telling you what it is. You’ll have to wait until Christmas morning, just like I have to wait for yours.”

Curling her arm through Arin’s, Jewell led her to the door. “Don’t get in trouble while I’m gone. The men can be pretty rowdy on Friday nights. With the game starting tomorrow, they’re going to do their best to hook up with you tonight. We’re going to draw names in the morning.”

“I can’t believe I’m going to do this. Viper said it was all right if I play?”

“Yes. We’re one man short, but Viper is going to ask if any of the brothers want two Santas.” Jewell rolled her eyes. “They’ll all volunteer for that. We usually share, anyway.” She shrugged.

“Oh God.” Not for the first time, the crazy, sexual adventure that she had planned months in advance was becoming scarier by the minute.

“Relax, Arin. It’s just a game. You can make it as naughty or nice as you want. Viper is going to make sure the brother that gets your name gets another, too. That way, if you decide you don’t want to participate in the naughty part of the game, the brother won’t be left with an empty bed.”

Her indecision fled. “I told you that I have every intention of playing the naughty part. If I’m going to do this, I want to be his only Santa.”

The thought of having to share one of the men with another woman was her greatest fear. She didn’t need to be compared to the perfection of the women that Jewell had introduced her to when she had arrived.

“I’ll remind you of that when one of the brothers figure out you have his name.”

Her friend expected her to change her mind. Even though she almost did, she didn’t want Jewell to know that before she did. Dammit, she was there to make a change in her attitude, and she was going to do it even if she died of embarrassment at doing some of the things she had never been brave to try before.

“Maybe I won’t wait for the game to win. You said Fridays are a free-for-all. I might take one of the men to tide me over until naughty Santa begins.”

“Go for it. I would if I didn’t have to go to town. I introduced you to the married brothers at the factory before we came to the club. The only ones left are in the clubhouse, ready to fuck if you make the first move.” Jewell started to turn the door handle then stopped. “Except one. There is one who I wasn’t able to introduce you to. Gavin prefers to be left alone.”

  “He’s the one—”

“Just steer clear of him. You can’t miss him when you see him. Half his skull is shaved and is covered in tattoos.”

“Trust me, I’ll keep my distance,” she promised as Jewell turned the knob so they could leave the room.

“Can I get you anything while I’m out?” Jewell asked as they went down the stairs.

Arin smiled down at the group of women waiting for Jewell as she whispered, “No. I brought everything I need. Just one quick question.”

  “Yes?”

“If you were me, which one of the men would be … uh … would be the best choice to start with?” Embarrassment rolled off her in waves as Jewell waved the other women through the door before they could reach the end of the stairs.

“The best part of doing The Last Riders is you don’t have to pick. You can do them all.”

  Chapter 2

Wearily taking his helmet off, Hennessy could see the breath he exhaled in the frost-bitten air. He had lost his fucking mind by not flying, which he would have if he didn’t hate flying worse than snow.

“It’s nothing like our club, is it?” his enforcer croaked as he got off the bike next to him.

“You mean, it has a ceiling?” Hennessy swore he left half of his frozen ass on the leather of his seat as he stood. Viper had failed to mention how cold it was when he had called to ask if Core and he could stay for a couple of days while on their way to Florida.

  “It wasn’t Sarafina’s fault.”

He gave the last remaining member of his club a disgusted scowl as they climbed over a mound of snow that had been plowed to the side and made their way to the steps. “Who’s fault is it then?” He wiggled his fingers instead of punching Core, afraid his frozen hand would break into a thousand shards of ice.

Not intimidated, Core didn’t hesitate to place the blame where he considered it belonged. “You should have put batteries in the fire detector.”

  “I didn’t have a ladder.”

“Yeah … well, now we have a club with a big hole in the ceiling.”

“Shut up. I fucked up. You think I don’t regret it?”

  “Just saying … it wasn’t Sarafina’s fault.”

“You’re right. It was Apoc’s. She was his fucking dog.” Lifting his leg to the first step had his balls shriveling to walnuts at the stinging pain.

“Did you say something?” Core said at his back.

“Watch the first step,” he managed to get out hoarsely. Any plans of having kids in the future were now nonexistent, thanks to a dog that had the same mental capacity as his owner.

Hennessy had come to the long, hard conclusion that he had been too easy on his men. The first time that Apoc had shown up with the licking mongrel, he should have borrowed a car and taken it to the nearest animal shelter. But had he done that? Fuck no. He had been taken in by the soulful eyes and had even sprung for the dog bed and food to make it more comfortable. And what did he get in return? A clubhouse that had water damage from the fire hoses and a big, gaping hole in the ceiling because it had gone up in a blaze so fast that they had been lucky to have gotten out alive.

One of the firemen had pulled him off Apoc when he’d been told the source of the fire was the stove being left on. It hadn’t been left on. The fucking dog had jumped onto the stove to get to the steak that been waiting for him for when he had finished his nap. Unfortunately, the other brothers had also taken a nap after stuffing their faces and had left the dog unattended. The fucker had accidently turned the knobs on, determined to beat him to eating the fucking steak.

Apoc and Sarafina had disappeared before the fire trucks had left. Hennessy didn’t know or care where they were. Actually, he took that back. He wished both of them were with the Predators. They deserved Apoc and the dog.

Hennessy’s life had gone to shit in a handbasket ever since he’d set eyes on Penni, Jackal’s wife, and despite every attempt he made, bad luck kept dogging his footsteps. Literally.

In the coming year, he planned to turn over a new leaf. When the repairs were made to the Road Kingz’s clubhouse, he was going to be even more of a hardass to any of brothers who had bailed on him. And that meant no fucking dogs!

Snow crunched under his boots as he climbed the long flight of steps to
the door. The brother standing guard didn’t exactly hold out the welcome mat.

  “Hennessy.”

  “Moon.”

“Wasn’t expecting to see you riding in today.”

Neither of them was a fan of the other. They had clashed heads more than one time during the brief stays he’d had with The Last Riders.

Moon irritated the fuck out of him. The brother’s dick had always gotten him in trouble. Hennessy had also spent weeks on the open road with him during the hunt for the head of the cartel, who was determined to take him and The Last Riders out.

The brother—and Hennessy called him a brother loosely—always had a hard-on for the unattainable. Moon could have any willing pussy he wanted, but he had a knack for being attracted to those who would bring the heat bearing down on whoever was the dumb fuck that was unfortunate to be next to him at the time. Viper had to be a saint for putting up with some of the shit that Moon was responsible for, which was why his ass was stuck in Treepoint.

“Told Viper we’d be here tomorrow. I’m early.” Hennessy wanted to grind his teeth for having to explain, blaming his politeness on the cold.

Stomping snow off his boots instead of throwing Moon over the railing of the porch, he waited for Moon to step aside so Core and he could go inside.

“Come back tomorrow … when you’re expected.”

Hennessy shrugged the snow off his shoulders. Screw being nice.

In one quick move, he did what he had wanted to do when he’d first seen Moon guarding the door. Then, not bothering to look at the snow angel that Moon had made when he’d hit the snowbank, Hennessy walked inside the club.
