“I want to hold Sam,” she said. Mac picked up the 18-month-old toddler and handed him over. Sam, still easy going and laid back, still with his daddy’s smile, grinned at her and said, “Hi, Mama!” as if he hadn’t been sitting right beside her on the bench.
“Hi, Sam,” she said, hugging him tightly. He always greeted her as if he hadn’t seen her in a few hours. She didn’t mind that one bit. It was always good to be wanted and welcomed. She settled him on her lap. And hugged him tight, she never wanted to let him go. After today, she wouldn’t have to, if things went well.
“All rise,” the bailiff said.
Jessie watched as the same judge that had married them three months ago, in a small ceremony in their backyard, walked in. Was that a coincidence? Well, Macintyre was a small town, so who knew?
Ten minutes later the courtroom erupted in cheers as he pounded his gavel and pronounced them a family. She and Mac had officially adopted Sam and no one could take him away from her, ever.
“Tonight, we party.” Mac enveloped them both in a hug making Sam giggle.
“And then we work on making a sibling for our son,” she agreed. “Maybe twin sisters! Who knows?”
“I never know, but I do know, once you make up your mind, no one in their right mind would mess with Jess.” And he kissed her to the sound of their Macintyre family clapping.
