“I have, woman!” I stuck my tongue back out at her. “I’ll be back to visit soon. Plus, you know I’m going to be on desk duty with this.” I lifted the arm that was rigged up in a cast and sling.
“We make one hell of a team, don’t we, Langley?”
“The best of the best.” I winked at her. “I’ll be back later and try to sneak in some contraband.” I leaned down and kissed her forehead. “Get better, okay? I can’t do this job without you.”
“Clearly not,” she chuckled. “Without me only a couple days, and you get shot twice? And fuck up your arm too.” She shook her head like she was disappointed in me, but the smile on her face told a different story.
I got a ride home from one of my buddies from the precinct.
My apartment felt empty without Cherry here with me. Even with Barely weaving in and out of my legs, I felt like I was alone. I didn’t want to be alone. I wanted to be with her. Too much had happened for her to just disappear or to just become the baker with the best Boston Creams in three counties.
I fed Barely and gave him some much-needed attention. Just as I was about to faceplant into my bed, someone knocked on my door.
Cherry stood on the other side. She wore a black dress with cherries on it, her hair done up with a scarf and was wearing red heels that gave me all sorts of dirty ideas. And in her hands was a pink box. I recognized the box instantly.
“I was starting to worry about you.”
“I’m sorry. I didn’t realize my phone was dead. I got it all charged up now.”
“What have you been up to?”
She grinned. “It’s Donut Day.”
“Yeah?” I hadn’t even thought about the date in a few days. I always did look forward to Donut Day.
“I wanted to make sure you got your favorites. Everything took longer than I expected. I swear, half the town showed up to get a donut today.” She held up the box like it was a peace offering. “I meant to get back to you before you left the hospital, but I’m glad you’re out of there. I didn’t like seeing you there.”
I stepped to the side and gestured for her to come inside.
“Are you saying there are donuts in that box?”
“It is Donut Day.” She set them on the table and opened the box.
Inside was a perfect baker’s dozen of Boston Creams. It was better than the finest art.
“I love you.” Her voice trembled on the words like she wasn’t sure about saying them.
My eyes met hers. As if the day could be any more perfect than Cherry with a box of donuts—she loved me? Me? How did a guy get so damned lucky? So many thoughts ran through my head, but none seemed as perfect as what she’d just offered me.
Cherry blurted out more since I didn’t say anything.
“And I’m sorry for everything. I never wanted any of this.”
I slid my hand onto her hip and pulled her a little closer.
“Aw, Cherry, I know that. None of this was your fault.”
“I think I’m finally getting that.” She reached up and cupped my face. “I’m glad you’re okay, but you look really tired.”
“I’m pretty wiped out. But this woman I love made me donuts, see, and it would be really rude of me not to have at least one and thank her properly.” I plucked a donut out of the box and held it between my teeth as I grabbed her hand and headed toward the couch. My apartment was dimly lit with only the bathroom light cascading out into the hall, giving us just enough light. I turned on the dim lamp next to the couch—I wanted to see her.
Sitting down, I pulled her onto my lap and took a bite of the donut. The chocolate icing melted into my mouth, the custard oozed onto my tongue, and the crisp dough was perfect as I reveled in the bite.
Cherry was watching me with big round eyes and licked her lips.
“How would you feel if I asked you to take your dress off?”
Her eyes hooded with desire, she gently got off my lap and unzipped her dress at the side and let the fabric pool at her ankles. She was wearing red panties and a matching bra that were the same shade as her plump lips and tall heels. Fuck, she was gorgeous.
“Straddle me.”
Cherry bit her lower lip and carefully climbed onto my lap. Plucking the donut out of my hand, she dipped her finger into the custard, then dragged the pale-yellow cream over her neck and down over her cleavage.
“Fuck.”
“Wanna eat me?”
“You have no fucking idea.”
My hand slid over her ass, and I pulled her flush against me, pressing my mouth to her neck and sucked playfully along the trail of custard.
She shivered in my arms, her fingers digging into my shoulders as her hips rocked against me.
I finished off the cream, then lifted Cherry up as I got off the couch. I made my way to the bedroom and tumbled onto the bed with her. I looked down at her, gently stroking her hair.
“Cherry, you’re so amazing.”
She cupped my face, her thumb tracing over my bottom lip.
“You’re amazing.” She lifted herself up to kiss me, her mouth opening to make way for my tongue. The kiss started off gentle and loving, but by the end of it, her legs hooked around my hips, and her cunt was pressed to my hard cock.
I moved down her body until I was kneeling between her spread legs.
“I’m pretty sure I was going to thank you properly.” I hooked my fingers into her panties and dragged them down her legs, leaving her heels on. Kissing along her inner thigh, just before I reached the promised land, my eyes found hers. She was already panting, wet, and writhing under my touch.
“This is the best Donut Day ever. But as sweet as your donuts are, there’s something I want on my tongue even more.”
Epilogue
Cherry
I got to the shop early.
I had so much on my mind. Damon and I had been together a year—to the day. We decided Donut Day should be our official anniversary—we never did anything traditional. We said “I love you” before we even had a real date and moved in together nearly two months later. It all seemed like a crazy whirlwind.
Once the bakery was back up to fully functional, Poppy and I started splitting the baking. She was now running half the store. Eventually, if she decided this was what she really wanted, I would make her a partner.
“You’re here early.” Poppy came up from the basement with a box in her hand.
“It’s our anniversary. He’ll be here in a while. I wanted to make sure I had time to put his box together for him.”
“You two are ridiculously cute,” Poppy smirked. “Why aren’t you married yet?”
The truth was, we hadn’t even talked about marriage. Things just fell together so easily in the beginning, then we were living our lives again. We found a two-bedroom apartment we loved near Main Street, so I didn’t have far to go to work, and he could get to work easily too. And that was that—we were in love and living together.
“I don’t know. We’ve done enough to completely change our lives around.” Logan had found the love of her life recently, and we even went out on a double date. It was a little odd, but Damon and her beau seemed to hit it off. Even if they didn’t, it wouldn’t stop Logan and me from hanging out.
“Don’t you want to get married?”
“Well, yeah,” I chuckled. “Eventually.” The problem was I got some news yesterday that changed everything for me. I wanted to get married, but I hadn’t even planned on bringing it up anytime soon. Things were good. I wasn’t worried about commitment; I knew Damon was as committed to us as I was even if I didn’t know exactly where he stood on everything. Our set-up worked.
But then… then the stick said “pregnant.”
“What’s up with you?” Poppy’s eyes narrowed like she was trying to see if there was something different about me.
“There’s nothing up with me.”
I could tell she didn’t believe me, but she didn’t press the issue. We went about getting the store ready
to open, just like we did together most mornings.
It was seven o’clock by the time Damon entered the bakery and got in line behind the rest of the patrons.
His dark brown eyes found mine. Instantly, I was thinking about him in all sorts of dirty scenarios. Living together and having sex all the time had done nothing to sate my desire for him. It was nearly insane how crazy horny he made me almost every time he stepped into the room. And he seemed just as insatiable for me. It was really no wonder I ended up pregnant. Clearly, the birth control I was on was no match for his sperm.
It was his turn, and he came to the counter. Gesturing for him to step over to the side, I let Poppy take over. I pulled the box I prepped for him up from under the counter and set it on top.
“It’s a wonder I haven’t gained a hundred pounds with the way you’re always giving me donuts,” he murmured as he leaned over the counter and kissed me.
“It’s Donut Day.” I leaned in close and winked at him. “Besides, don’t you burn enough calories fucking me senseless?”
He chuckled.
“It’s our anniversary.” He hooked his finger into my apron and pulled me forward for another kiss.
“You have to eat one here,” I said.
He raised an eyebrow. It wasn’t a request I’d ever made before.
I pushed the box toward him.
“All right, but first, I have an anniversary present for you... and a question.”
It was my turn to be confused. I blinked at him.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet bag. He opened it up, then held the bag upside down over my open palm.
Something dropped into my hand.
I looked down at the small silvery loop, realizing there was a red stone. I picked up the ring and inspected it slowly.
“Cherry Maraschino, will you marry me?”
The ruby glimmered in the store florescent lighting.
“Damon, are you serious?”
Damon hopped the counter and gathered me into his arms.
“I’ve never been more serious about anything in my life. What do you say?”
“I say… you should really have a donut.”
“Cherry…” Damon’s smile dipped down into a frown.
“Just trust me.”
Damon turned toward the box, spun it around, and popped open the lid. He stared down at the thirteen Boston Cream donuts, but the one sitting on top I’d made special.
The yellow frosting over the chocolate glaze read We’re pregnant.
“Cherry, are you serious?”
“I’ve never been more serious in my life,” I laughed.
He grabbed me and kissed me hard.
“How? When? What? I mean, I know how. But when?”
“Yesterday. I thought today would be the perfect time to tell you. Are you okay with this?”
“As long as you agree to marry me.”
I smiled and slipped the ring onto my finger. I pursed my lips and looked at the ceiling, pretending to think about it.
“I think I can make that work.”
Damon lifted me into his arms and kissed me again. He held me close as he started pushing me toward the back.
“Poppy, Cherry’s going to need you to run the store for a little while.”
Poppy’s eyes widened. “You’re leaving me alone?! It’s Donut Day!”
Damon whisked me into the storage room.
“Damn straight, it’s Donut Day. Best fucking day ever.” His lips found mine.
And me? I found all the happiness in the world on Donut Day.
