Trap for a Goose Page 16

‘Kristin, did Danielle Jackson have any feelings for him?’ Cameron asked.

‘Dear, it’s hard to say, but I think she was in love with him. I think people like Danielle Jackson are normally incapable of loving someone. She was an unfaithful wife and a cruel person. She was indifferent to the feelings of other people, including her sister and husband. Danielle Jackson preferred men who had money and power, but she fell in love with someone who was the opposite,’ stated Kristin.

‘How could she fall in love with such a subject?’ asked Marco Gverzoni.

‘Life is an amazing thing. You agree with me, Chief Inspector?’ Kristin asked Steve Duke, who had just entered the living room.

‘I completely agree with you,’ affirmed Steve Duke.

‘Kristin, how did you realize that Jennifer Davidson and Fiona Jackson both killed Danielle?’ asked Barbara.

‘Barbara, it was Fiona Jackson who killed Danielle,’ noted Steve Duke.

‘At first, I introduced Jennifer Davidson as a loving sister, a caring and hardworking mother, and also a woman with a difficult fate. I think she suffered a lot, agonized and tried to be happy but with such a terrible husband and haughty sister she felt inferior. Fiona Jackson, noticing the precarious frustration of Jennifer Davidson, took advantage of the weakness of a poor, desperate woman. Fiona is an arrogant, irreconcilable and inflexible woman with a cold soul.

Upon learning of Danielle’s blackmail of her husband, Fiona Jackson hated her even more. Realizing that Danielle was not only the dishonorable and greedy wife of her son, but also her husband’s mistress and the person extorting money from her family, Fiona Jackson could not forgive. So, she decided to act, but using someone else’s hands,’ said Kristin.

  ‘Kristin, what brutality…’ declared Barbara.

‘Yes, you are right, Barbara. She informed Jennifer Davidson in colorful tones of Danielle and Craig’s relationship. Jennifer already had suspicions that her husband was seeing someone else who meant something to him. These suspicions were confirmed after she accidentally found a crumpled note in the waste basket that Craig had written to her saying, “Forgive me, I can no longer live this way, it is beyond my strength. If you can forgive me, then…” Jennifer talked about this note to Fiona Jackson, but she couldn’t imagine that this woman was her sister, because Danielle had once disliked Craig and often quarreled with him. But most importantly, she felt such a despair of the soul, she could not understand why her own sister again caused her such pain. And when she found out about her sister’s pregnancy, she was furious and told Fiona Jackson about this.’

‘Kristin, I agree with you, she was an unhappy woman,’ said Barbara.

‘You know, Barbara, this is a terrible thing when you are betrayed by your loved ones. She followed her sister and husband and knew where they walked and met. That evening, after the family party, she returned home, put the children to bed and left the house through the back door. She accidentally heard Danielle talking to Craig about dating,’ noted Kristin.

‘I suspected Richard Jackson of this murder,’ admitted Martina.

‘Martina, when I visited the Jackson family, then I realized that Richard Jackson has the same kind soul as his son. He and his son are very similar in character. At their home for a cup of coffee, I thought about his endurance and patience when I saw the empty eyes of Fiona. And when he told me that he noticed raindrops on the floor, I then thought of Jennifer Davidson,’ said Kristin.

‘Enough, glasses of wine are waiting for us,’ reported Steve Duke.

‘Hooray, our glasses!’ exclaimed Martina, took a glass and went to Kristin.

‘What do you want to ask me, Martina?’ inquired Kristin.

‘Oh, I just thought about Debbie Larsson and James Jackson. Do you think they have a chance to be together?’ asked Martina, whispering.

‘It has already happened. This afternoon, Cameron and I met them at a restaurant. They looked like a couple in love, their eyes glittered,’ whispered Kristin.

‘Kristin, have you noticed that today we are drinking excellent French wine?’ Cameron said.

‘I agree with you, Cameron, this is an excellent wine. Believe me, I am knowledgeable in French wines.’

‘Kristin, our family always prefers French wines,’ pronounced Steve Duke, proudly.

‘Kristin, until today, Steve rated only Chilean wines, but today he bought French especially for you,’ announced a smiling Barbara.

‘Barbara, you are mistaken, my family always preferred French wine. My father had a good French friend, certainly, you didn’t know him, they fought together against Nazi Germany. And so, my father drank only French wine in honor of his close friend,’ said Steve Duke, proudly.

‘Steve, I remember well that your father preferred to drink beer rather than wine,’ said Barbara.

‘Barbara, he drank beer only to feel closer to the people, and for his soul he preferred only French wine,’ clarified Steve Duke.

‘I have a suggestion,’ Cameron reported. ‘Let’s drink to Steve’s father, who, for the good of his soul, preferred only French wine.’

‘Hurrah, for Steve Duke’s father!’ they all pronounced at the same time.

‘My favorite guests, but you still do not know how I fell in love with real Italian pasta,’ declared Steve Duke.

‘Steve, you want to say that you love Italian pasta?’ Martina asked.

‘Yes, that is my favorite dish. I fell in love with Italian pasta thanks to my mother-in-law. When I was visiting Barbara’s parents, her mom always cooked real Italian pasta,’ reported Steve Duke.

‘My mother was cooking pasta, Steve?’ asked Barbara, in surprise.

‘Yes, Barbara, pasta, you understand well. And now, in my freezer, there is always pizza,’ confirmed Steve Duke.

  ‘Bravo, Steve!’ shouted Marco Gverzoni.

‘Now, let us drink to our friendship,’ suggested Steve Duke.

‘Long live friendship!’ they all shouted at the same time.
