  Preface

TRUST IS SOMETHING My people have always struggled with understanding. There are three elements to learn: Trust in self, trust in others, and trust in the process of life. Each person is given free choice in what they decide to do with his/her life. This freedom of choice is what can limit or free a person. When ultimate trust is achieved, success ultimately follows.

The first element of trust is to know yourself and what you are capable of achieving. Know that your life is going to have mistakes in it, because those mistakes are going to be what propel you further in your life faster. Instincts are your first guide to learning how to trust. Each person has an innate ability to know whether or not someone can be trusted. Usually, people get into trouble when they ignore their initial instinct. Be mindful of this basic instinct, and you will learn much faster to make the right choices.

The second element of trust is learning to trust others. This is not to say you should throw caution to the wind and let people use you. On the contrary, trusting others means that you bring people around you who will build you up and propel you forward. If the trust is reciprocated, then the relationship is symbiotic, and everyone will win in the end.

The last element is to trust in life’s process. Too many people try to rush through life trying to achieve the ulti
mate goal. So much is missed or bypassed along the way so that when the end goal is achieved, little satisfaction is gained by it. Take time to appreciate the process. Learn to love the people and circumstances brought into your life so you can absorb everything and grow from the experience.

Elders play a vital role with the people in building trust bridges. When an Elder is working with the proper goal in mind, then his district will be prosperous and happy. Elders set the ultimate example by trusting in Me. My will is mirrored through their works.

  Chapter One

AMANDA STEL WATCHED Neal closely as he sauntered out of the Ascension Gate room in Manzanit with Vinia close to his side. He certainly did not look like a man who had been drugged senseless only a few minutes before. Now came the interesting part where they had to decide what to do with Neal. He appeared to have his memory back where Tuala was concerned, but his memories of Earth were now gone.

Originally, Amanda had wanted to get Neal out of Tuala because he was being drugged and held captive by Elder Vargen for his knowledge of Earth’s engineering. Now she had helped him escape from a similar scenario from a deranged doctor on Earth for his knowledge of Tuala. She was pulled from her thoughts by Rasa touching her arm in sympathy.

“Come on, Amanda, we’ll get this sorted out,” Rasa said as she pulled on her arm to lead her out of the room and into a more comfortable place to discuss their options.

Barla came to Amanda’s other side and asked, “What happened Amanda? Why was Dr. Gascon at the Gate on the Earth side?” She continued to stare at Amanda even though it was clear she was not going to get an answer. Barla could practically see the wheels turning in Amanda’s head as she reviewed her recent escapade.

Amanda’s gaze returned to the Ascension Gate where she had seen Dr. Gascon’s face mirrored in the center of the energy source. She shivered violently and allowed herself to be led out of the room between Rasa and Barla. There were other matters which needed her attention more, namely what to do with Neal.

Rasa followed Vinia and Neal as they slowly navigated the long hallway leading to the main areas of the Residence. She called ahead to them when they came near the room she wanted to use, “Go into the next doorway on your right, Vinia. We need to get some things worked out.”

Vinia did as she had been instructed and turned Neal to their right and settled herself and Nealan in one of the overstuffed, foxl-hide loveseats by a lit fireplace. The room was large, and yet it retained a quaint feeling with the tall bookshelves lining all of the walls except where the fireplace took precedence on another whole wall. There were no windows and yet the room was well-lit by sconces of elemy spheres.

As they all took their places around the room, Amanda wished Chelesa had stayed with them. She understood her desire to connect with her samara once again. However, she could really use her sound advice as a wise-woman at this time with Neal. She sighed in resignation and sat down. For several moments nobody said anything as they all tried to take in the recent events.

“Is anyone going to tell me what’s going on?” Neal asked petulantly.

Amanda sighed and began, “It would be too long of a story to tell, Neal, and I don’t expect you to believe all of it right now. Really, it’s pointless to go into all of the details since we’re going to be taking you back home and you won’t remember this conversation anyway.”

Neal scowled at Amanda’s answer and decided to turn to Vinia for an explanation, “Maybe you’ll be more helpful, Vinia. We’ve been together for a long time now, and I expect more from you than I would from a stranger.” He tipped his head to indicate Amanda was the stranger.

Vinia looked guiltily at Amanda and answered softly, “Suffice it to say, we are in a world called Tuala, but you are really from Earth. Amanda’s going to have to take you back home for a while, so you can get some things straightened out with your parents. After that, we can decide whether you want to live here in Tuala or back on Earth.”

Neal’s scowl deepened since Vinia seemed to be spouting off the same drivel as the other woman named Amanda.

Rasa turned to Amanda and asked, “Is that what you want to do as well, Amanda? Do you want to take Neal home to his parents? You know there will be a lot of questions which will be really hard to answer. Neal won’t have any memories, even the things he regained from this last week will be gone as well.”

“I know it’ll be complicated, but I owe it to his parents. They’ve already lost their son once; they can help me bring him back this next time. I’ll probably have to tell them the truth, although I’m not sure how it’ll be received. With the luck I’ve had lately, they’d probably push to have me committed.” Amanda sighed deeply at the difficult position into which she had put herself.

Barla could see her niece was in turmoil and finally came to the conclusion she had thought she never would when she offered, “I’ll come with you to help with Neal.”

Amanda stared at her aunt in amazement. She knew how much Barla feared going back to Earth after all these anons. She had rightly been afraid of losing her memories of her husband and children in Tuala when she passed through the veil. Because Barla now had her own birth crystal, she no longer had to fear the loss, yet she had not come to terms with it until just this moment. “Are you sure? I don’t want you to feel pressured about this,” Amanda asked in disbelief.

“Yes, I’m sure. You need the help, and I’ve been selfish enough. Besides, I’d really like to see my sister again!” Barla kept talking to convince herself it was the right thing to do.

“Okay, well I guess we should probably get going then,” Amanda said as she stood up. She looked over at where Neal and Vinia sat on the loveseat, and she realized there were still two more problems. “Neal needs a different outfit. He’s kind of conspicuous in his hospital gown.”

“I can arrange for something for him to wear,” Rasa said. She got up from her seat and pulled on a cord by the door. She resumed her seat to wait for a staff member to come at her call.

“Also, Vinia, do you want to come, too?” Amanda asked softly.

“What about Danika? She’s here too, remember?”

“We can bring her with us.”

“I don’t know. Don’t you have enough to worry about without dealing with my daughter and me?”

“It’ll be fine. Besides, it might help Neal regain his memory faster if you and Danika are there as well. What do you say?”

Neal had been moving his head back and forth as he listened to the two women talk about him as though he were not in the room. “Don’t I get a say in all of this?”

“Not today, Neal, I’m sorry to say,” Amanda answered matter-of-factly. “Once we get you back home and you’ve had time to recover, then you can do as you like. Until then you’re just going to have to understand we know what we’re doing and it’s for the best for you and your family.”

“You keep talking about my family, what family?”

  “Your mother and father, Neal.”

“Why do you keep calling me Neal when my name is Nealan?”

“Actually your real name is Nealand Taivas, but we all call you Neal for short.”

Neal sat back in the sofa and contemplated what Amanda just told him. Something about the way she said his name brought a memory forward and he wanted to try to figure out what it really meant.

A knock sounded on the door just before it opened. A staff member waited expectantly to be asked to perform a service for which the bell had been rung. Rasa stayed seated and asked, “Can you please find some suitable clothes for this gentleman? We’re going to need them in the next couple of minutes. Thank you.”

“As you wish,” the woman replied with a small curtsy. She turned sharply and left as quietly as she had come.

Amanda appreciated the efficiency of the staff here in Manzanit. She was getting antsy to get going. Now that they had a plan of action, Amanda wanted to be on her way. She really did
not want Barla to have enough time to change her mind about coming with her.

  Chapter Two

IT WAS EARLY in the morning in Richmond Heights, Florida, when Shemalla knocked on the door, smiling over at Willian beside her. The red door opened and Shemalla turned her gaze back to the middle-aged man. “Marcus, it’s so good to see you. Thank you for agreeing to meet with Willian and me on such short notice.”

“Shemalla, dear; come on in. We can take care of introductions once everyone’s together. It’s been way too long. Melissa has been cleaning all day in anticipation of you coming over,” Marcus said. He stood to the side to allow Shemalla and her guest to enter the house.

The house was pretty small with only two bedrooms. The couple had given up on ever having kids and eventually had downsized their house to make it easier for them to travel. Willian took note of everything as they entered the narrow foyer, moving sideways to get his rolling suitcase across the threshold.

“Just leave your bag there for now,” Marcus instructed.

Willian turned and saw the living room. They sat down on the worn couch as Marcus went to get Melissa.

Soon enough Marcus returned, promptly followed by Melissa. She rushed forward and gave Shemalla a hug and warm welcome. “It’s so good to see you! And who do we have here?”

“This is Willian Potts. Willian this is Melissa and Marcus Parker.”

“It’s nice to meet you, Willian,” Marcus replied with his hand outstretched to shake his in welcome. “We’re excited to have you with us. Do you know how long you want to stay?”

“Thank you for having me. I’m not exactly sure how long I’ll be, I hope that’s going to be okay,” Willian said as he looked swiftly from Marcus to Melissa and finally to Shemalla.

“No problem. Shemalla has told us what your plans are and we know relationships can take time to heal. Don’t worry about a thing and we’ll do our best to make your stay here as easy as possible. I’m sure there are many things about Earth with which you are unfamiliar, so feel free to ask us any questions you may have.”

Willian nodded and remained silent. He was thankful for Shemalla already explaining his mission. Just then there was a strange noise which caught Willian’s attention, and he looked beyond his new hosts to see a fluffy animal racing toward him. He was unsure what he should do as he tried to recall what the creature was from the studies he had made of Earth animals.
