Elias steps towards Stan and says, “You can ride with Paxton over to the hanger.”
Sheila walks over to Kyle and Kristina. Kyle and Kristina each give Sheila a dirty look and Sheila says in a soft voice to Kristina, “We’ll try to contact you when we get settled in Colorado.”
Kyle doesn’t believe Sheila and Kristina feels betrayed by Sheila, Elias, and Paxton.
“I know you feel left out of the loop, but this is bigger than you and us, we are just playing our part and trying to survive,” says Sheila.
“Guess so, adapt and survive,” replies Kyle.
“Just be careful here, some dangerous people are still on base,” says Sheila to Kyle and Kristina.
Elias walks over to Sheila and says, “We have to go.”
Sheila says goodbye to Kyle, Kristina, and Kaden and Sheila exits the house.
“You coming with me?” asks Paxton to Stan.
“I guess I have to, right?” answers Stan.
“It’s the only safe way to see your daughter again,” replies Paxton.
“Yeah, I’m coming with you then,” responds Stan.
“I’ll give you a minute to say goodbye,” says Paxton to Stan.
“Stay safe Sinclair’s and I hope to see you again under different circumstances,” says Paxton and then Paxton exits the house.
“You keep an eye out for your parents. You are a good kid,” says Stan to Kaden.
“I will, please tell Ashlyn hello for me and that I’m sorry I wasn’t able to protect her,” replies Kaden.
“You did good K,” responds Stan to Kaden with a tear in his eye.
“I wish we could come with you,” says Kyle to Stan.
“Me too,” replies Stan.
“Something isn’t right with all this, but get to Ashlyn and stay safe,” says Kristina to Stan.
“I’m going to see what I can find out in Colorado and report back to you,” replies Stan.
BEEP! BEEP!
Paxton’s jeep horn beeps twice.
“He’s such an ass,” says Kristina.
“I better go,” says Stan.
Stan hugs Kristina goodbye and gives Kyle a handshake.
Kyle, Kristina, and Kaden walk with Stan towards the front of the house and Stan gets into Paxton’s jeep.
Paxton reverses out of the driveway and Stan waves goodbye to Kyle, Kaden, and Kristina.
“Guess it was foolish to think we would all survive this together,” says Kristina.
“But at least the three of us are together,” replies Kyle.
“You think they’ll be safe in Colorado?” asks Kaden.
“Hard to say, but let’s get back home. Maybe our orders are there waiting for us,” answers Kyle.
Kyle, Kaden, and Kristina get into Kyle’s SUV and Kyle drives back to their house.
Kyle arrives at their house and he sees that their front door is open.
“Did we leave the front door open?” asks Kristina as she looks at the front door of their house from inside Kyle’s SUV.
“No, someone was in our house,” answers Kyle.
“Stay in the car, I’ll check it out,” says Kyle to Kaden and Kristina.
Kyle opens his driver side SUV door, exits his SUV, and slowly walks up his front porch steps.
“Hello!” shouts Kyle as he walks into his house through the open front door.
“We’re in here!” shouts a man to Kyle from the back of Kyle’s house.
Kyle cautiously enters his house, and he sees that stuff is all over the place and it looks like someone broke into the house and robbed the place.
“Who are you and why are you in my house?” shouts Kyle as he takes cover against the wall that leads into the kitchen.
“Kyle, it’s us, we have something for you,” answers a man to Kyle.
Kyle recognizes the man’s voice, and he shouts, “Alex is that you?”
“Yeah, and Ty and Ovi,” answers Alex.
Kyle comes from around the wall and he sees Alex, Ty, and Ovi standing in his living room.
Kyle walks over to Alex and Alex has a thin white envelope in his right hand.
“What’s that?” asks Kyle to Alex.
Alex answers, “It’s for you.”
“Why are you guys in here?” asks Kyle as Alex hands him the thin white envelope.
“We were coming by to see how you were doing and we saw the front door was open and your house looked like this,” answers Alex.
“Where is Kris and your son?” asks Ty to Kyle.
“In the car,” answers Kyle as he looks at the thin white envelope.
Kristina walks into the house and shouts, “Kyle? You okay?”
“In the living room hun!” shouts Kyle.
Kristina and Kaden walk into the living room and they see Alex, Ty, Ovi, and Kyle.
“Did you do this?” asks Kristina to Alex.
“No, we found it like this,” answers Alex.
“Can you please give us some privacy?” asks Kyle as he looks at Alex, Ty, and Ovi.
“Yeah, just glad you are okay,” answers Alex.
“I heard you’ll be working with us in the big lab now,” says Ovi to Kyle.
“Do you guys need help cleaning up?” asks Ty to Kristina.
“No thanks Ty, we can handle it,” answers Kristina.
“Just let us know if you need anything, we are in house 478,” replies Ty.
Kristina thanks Ty and Ty, Alex, and Ovi exit the Sinclair’s house.
Kyle opens the thin white envelope and there are orders for Kyle and Kristina to meet with a Dr. Patricia Smith for their new assignment.
Kaden runs up the stairs and sees that the belongings in his room were thrown all over and somethings were taken.
“They stole my stuff!” shouts Kaden.
Kyle and Kristina run upstairs, and Kaden says, “They took my laptop and tablet.”
Kyle sees that the electronics that were in Kaden’s room on the table are also gone.
“Who took our stuff?” asks Kristina.
Kyle looks directly at the small camera that is in the corner of Kaden’s bedroom and answers, “I don’t know, but I’m sure it was someone here that didn’t like us snooping around.”
CHAPTER 10
DAY 52
It’s mid-morning and Kyle, Kristina, and Kaden are sitting in the waiting room of a medical building at Fort Derrick. “You think it’s smart to meet this Doctor Smith lady?” asks Kristina to Kyle.
“What other choice do we have?” asks Kyle.
A tall thin brunette Caucasian woman that is dressed in business attire and a long white lab coat opens a door and walks over to Kyle, Kristina, and Kaden. “You must be the Sinclair’s. I am Dr. Patricia Smith,” says the tall thin Caucasian woman.
Kyle shakes Dr. Smith’s right hand and Dr. Smith says, “Please follow me.”
“Is it okay if our son comes with us?” asks Kristina to Dr. Smith.
Kaden notices that Dr. Smith is holding a tablet and he thinks about his missing laptop, tablet, and gear.
“He can wait out here,” answers Dr. Smith.
“Great,” says Kaden with a sarcastic tone.
Kyle and Kristina enter Dr. Smith’s office and Dr. Smith closes her office door.
Kyle notices that Dr. Smith’s office is very nice, clean, and there is a large dark brown desk in the back of the office.
Dr. Smith sits at her desk and she tells Kyle and Kristina to sit in the chairs in front of her desk.
Kyle and Kristina sit down, and Dr. Smith looks at the files on her tablet of Kyle and Kristina.
Kristina checks over Dr. Smith and she notices Dr. Smith’s long brown hair that is tied back into a ponytail, her pale skin, and freckles on her cheeks.
“You two are very qualified from what I see in your files,” says Dr. Smith.
“Thank you, we were working in the lab here,” replies Kyle.
“I see, and you did some good work, but you’ll be working in the main lab wit
h live subjects now,” says Dr. Smith.
“What kind of subjects?” asks Kristina.
“I can’t get into specifics here in my office, but you’ll be working with more than blood samples like you previously were,” answers Dr. Smith.
“When do we start?” asks Kyle to Dr. Smith.
“Training is tomorrow morning, and you’ll start working with subjects after that,” answers Dr. Smith.
“May I ask you a question doc?” asks Kristina.
Dr. Smith looks at Kristina.
“Who gave us access to the main lab now? Who gave those orders?” asks Kristina to Dr. Smith.
Dr. Smith looks over Kristina and Kyle’s files on her tablet and she sees that Commander Pine gave the order to have Kristina and Kyle moved into the main lab.
“But she’s gone now,” says Kristina.
“Yeah, she put the order in before she left and as far as I can see she gave you full access to everything. Even her office and her office computer,” replies Kristina.
Kyle finds it odd that Commander Pine did all those things before she left, especially giving them access to her office.
“Do you have any questions?” asks Dr. Smith to Kyle and Kristina.
Kyle and Kristina are about to answer and Dr. Smith interrupts by saying, “ACT please shutdown.”
“For how long?” asks ACT.
“The full cooldown period,” answers Dr. Smith.
“Very well, I’ll be back online in five minutes,” replies ACT.
Dr. Smith watches the red light of the camera, that is positioned in the corner of her office near her office door, turn off and Dr. Smith says, “Marissa sent for you two before she left. She has a message for you both in her office.”
“What is the message?” asks Kyle to Dr. Smith.
“I don’t know, all I know is that she told me directly to make sure you two will work with me and that she wants you both to have full access to her office and computer,” answers Dr. Smith.
Kyle looks at Kristina and Dr. Smith says, “I couldn’t get you access to her office yet, but I’m working on it. My new orders are to be experimenting on living and dead subjects and Marissa said that you two can be trusted.”
“Where did Commander Pine go?” asks Kristina to Dr. Smith.
“I’m not certain, but I think it could be one of three places and, if I get a hold of her, I’ll try to find out,” answers Dr. Smith.
“Do you know who broke into our house?” asks Kyle to Dr. Smith.
“I don’t know anything about that, but watch what you say all over base. Eyes and ears are everywhere,” answers Dr. Smith.
“Who is monitoring the base?” asks Kristina.
“Coming back online now,” says ACT.
“We’ll talk another time,” answers Dr. Smith in a soft voice to Kristina and in her normal voice Dr. Smith says, “Okay, well I’ll meet you both in front of Building D at 0800 tomorrow and we’ll start the training and lab work.”
Kyle and Kristina don’t know what to say to Dr. Smith and Dr. Smith gets up from her office desk chair and Kyle and Kristina do the same.
Kristina and Kyle say goodbye to Dr. Smith, and they exit Dr. Smith’s office.
Kaden, Kristina, and Kyle exit the building and start walking towards Kyle’s SUV.
“So what am I supposed to do now? Stay in the house while you are both working?” asks Kaden as they walk down a sidewalk that leads to the parking lot where Kyle’s SUV is parked.
“For now, until we find something for you,” answers Kristina.
“So I have no laptop, no tablet, no nothing,” says Kaden as he walks behind Kristina and Kyle.
“I guess you need to go old school and read an actual paper book,” jokes Kyle.
“But seriously though Kyle, do you think it’s safe to leave Kaden alone in the house?” asks Kristina as Kyle, Kaden, and Kristina make it back to Kyle’s SUV.
Kyle looks around and he sees far less people walking around the base and he answers Kristina, “What else can we do?”
Kyle gets into the driver seat of his SUV, Kristina gets into the passenger seat, and Kaden gets into the backseat of Kyle’s SUV.
Kyle starts up his SUV and he asks, “Do they not have a school here?”
Kyle reverses out of the parking space and Kaden answers, “I didn’t see one or any signs for one.”
“This is a military base, not a college,” answers Kristina.
“Maybe we should have went to West Point, that’s both a college and a military base,” says Kyle.
“What about Annapolis?” asks Kristina.
Kyle drives down the street and Kaden answers, “I’m not joining the Navy.”
“I guess college is done for everyone, people aren’t worried about going to college now,” says Kyle.
Kristina thinks about Kaden not going to college and she starts to get upset. “That’s terrible, college is one of the best parts of a person’s life,” says Kristina.
“Why can’t we just leave?” asks Kaden from the backseat of Kyle’s SUV.
Kyle enters their neighborhood, and he thinks about Kaden’s question.
“We can try, but I doubt they’ll just let us drive off base,” answers Kyle.
“Who is going to stop us? How will they know if we left?” asks Kaden.
Kyle parks his SUV in their driveway.
“I guess we could try, but there were guards at the exit the last time I left with Kiran,” answers Kyle.
“I hope your brother is okay,” says Kristina.
“Me too, but we couldn’t contact him if we wanted to, since our stuff was taken,” replies Kyle.
Kyle, Kaden, and Kristina exit from Kyle’s SUV and Kristina asks, “Do you know what was taken from the house?”
Kyle opens their front door, and the Sinclair’s house is still somewhat a mess from the prior break in.
“Well I know they took my electronics from my room,” says Kaden.
“Are we going to tell anyone that our stuff was taken?” asks Kaden.
“Who would we tell?” asks Kyle.
“They have to have a base security or something here, right?” answers Kristina.
“I’ll ask Dr. Smith tomorrow about who we should talk to, but let’s clean this place up,” replies Kyle.
Kyle thinks about the USB junk drive that Nate gave him in CBD and he runs upstairs.
Kyle pulls out a drawer of the end table that is next to his bed and reaches into the space where the drawer in the end table should be.
Kyle feels around and he touches the USB junk drive that is taped on the inside of the end table and he is relieved that the USB junk drive is still there.
Kristina comes into the master bedroom and Kyle puts the drawer back into the end table.
“Is it?” asks Kristina.
Kyle nods his head yes.
“Who do you think broke into our house?” asks Kristina.
Kyle looks up at the camera in the corner of the master bedroom and Kristina says, “It’s not like they aren’t the ones who did this.”
“Yeah, it has to be someone involved with things around here, and it’s funny that they only took Kaden’s laptop and tablet, Kiran’s electronics, and a couple other small things.
“Well, we don’t have guns on base and not really much to our name here,” replies Kristina.
“Yeah, I want to get our guns back. I don’t feel safe in here,” says Kyle.
“What do you think of Dr. Smith?” asks Kristina to Kyle.
“She seems nice and I hope it works out with her,” answers Kyle.
“Yeah, it’s kind of weird that Commander Pine gave us more access around here,” replies Kristina.
“We’ll see what that’s all about tomorrow, but, for right now, let’s go clean up this house,” responds Kyle.
Kyle and Kristina walk down the upstairs hallway and down their stairs and Kristina asks, “Don’t you find it odd that Alex, Ty, and Ovi were in the house yesterday an
d it was broken into.”
“Yeah, I do, but I don’t know what to make of it,” answers Kyle.
“Do you think they broke into the house?” asks Kristina.
Kaden cleans up a couple things in the living room and Kyle answers, “I’m not sure, but they are definitely on my list of suspects.”
“Who is?” asks Kaden.
“The three people that we used to work with,” answers Kyle.
“Those three guys that were in here yesterday?” asks Kaden.
“Yeah, they are Alex, Ty, and Ovi,” answers Kyle.
A couple of hours go by and Kristina, Kaden, and Kyle have finished cleaning up their house and are now sitting outside on their back patio.
“Have you ever seen the people that live next to us?” asks Kristina.
“No, have you?” asks Kyle.
“No, I haven’t really seen a lot of people living in the neighborhood actually,” answers Kristina.
“What about you K?” asks Kristina to Kaden.
“I haven’t seen anyone living in the homes near our house, but I have seen a couple people in homes around the neighborhood,” answers Kaden.
“When did you see people around the neighborhood?” asks Kristina to Kaden.
“When Ashlyn and I would go for a run,” answers Kaden and then Kaden starts to get upset just mentioning Ashlyn’s name.
Kristina hugs Kaden and Kyle thinks about Ashlyn and Stan.
“You think they are in Colorado by now?” asks Kaden.
“Maybe, I just hope they are okay,” answers Kyle.
“I can’t stop thinking of Ashlyn being a lab rat in some government lab with tubes and lines in her,” says Kaden.
Kyle looks at Kristina for what to say to Kaden to make him feel better about things and Kristina says, “I’m not sure that’s what they are doing to Ashlyn.”
“But what if they are, what if they are torturing her?” asks Kaden as he breaks from Kristina’s hug.
“What makes you think they are doing that to her?” asks Kyle to Kaden.
“We’ve all seen the movies and that’s what they do. The test subjects are on long metal tables, with lines in their arms, mouth, and nose. Something like in anatomy lab,” answers Kaden.
Kyle looks at Kaden and asks, “Do you feel like you let her down? Like you should have done something?”
