Kristina sees Kyle smiling and she asks, “What are you smiling about?”

Kyle looks at Kristina, stops smiling, and answers, “Nothing, it’s just funny what happened is all.”

Kristina looks at Kyle and asks, “What should we do with all this? Can we take it home with us?”

Kyle puts on a smartwatch onto his left wrist and answers, “Let’s just take the smartwatches for now.”

“But what about the laptop and tablets? What about the guns?” asks Kristina.

Kyle looks at the pistols, the laptop, the tablets, and the radio as they sit on the desk.

“I think we keep these all here for now, I don’t want to get caught with them,” answers Kyle.

Kristina looks at the laptop and replies, “I think we have to give Kaden his laptop.”

Kyle thinks about what to do and he responds, “I don’t have a bag or anything with us. We’ll tell him that we found it, but I don’t want to just walk right outside of here with it.”

“Why though? It’s only a computer,” says Kristina.

“Commander Pine took our stuff for a reason and until we find out why, it’s best to keep them safe in here for now,” replies Kyle.

Kristina thinks about what Kyle said and she agrees that the best thing to do is to keep everything in the office except for the smartwatches.

“But I’m giving K this smartwatch,” says Kristina to Kyle as Kristina holds up the all-black smartwatch.

“That should be fine,” replies Kyle.

Kristina looks around the office and says, “This place has kind of an insane asylum vibe.”

Kyle chuckles and replies, “Yeah, it’s just missing the padded walls.”

Kristina remembers that Dr. Smith said that there are not any cameras in the office, and she gets an idea in her head.

Kristina places all the objects back into the desk drawers and Kyle wonders what Kristina is doing.

Kristina closes the desk drawers, turns towards Kyle, and she starts to aggressively kiss Kyle.

Kyle kisses Kristina back and Kyle asks, “What are you doing?”

“Just go with it, there aren’t any cameras in here,” answers Kristina.

Kyle, while kissing Kristina, looks around the room and makes sure that there are not any cameras in the room, and he doesn’t see any.

Kristina sits on top of the desk and she pulls Kyle close and she starts to unzip Kyle’s pants.

About ten minutes go by and Kristina and Kyle are both laying on the white tile floor. “We need to put a futon or something in here,” jokes Kristina.

“At least a blanket and some pillows,” jokes Kyle.

“Yeah, I can’t remember the last time we did it in a bed,” says Kristina.

“It’s weird knowing that people could be watching us,” replies Kyle as he stands up and puts his pants on.

Kyle helps Kristina up from the white tile floor and Kristina says, “Yeah, the shower has been the best place for us lately.”

Kyle and Kristina get dressed, make sure the desk is secured and locked, and they exit the office.

Kyle pulls the office door closed and checks to make sure it’s locked.

“You have the paper?” asks Kristina to Kyle.

“Yeah, in my pocket,” answers Kyle and Kyle and Kristina walk down the interior hallway.

Kristina and Kyle exit the building and they make their way over to the parking lot where Kyle’s SUV is.

Kristina gets into Kyle’s SUV and Kyle is about to get into his SUV when a soldier comes running over to Kyle.

Kyle sees the soldier and he recognizes the soldier from the elevator today and also from their previous meeting at CBD.

“I thought that was you,” says the soldier to Kyle.

“Do I know you?” asks Kyle to the soldier.

“Well, kind of,” answers the soldier to Kyle.

Kyle doesn’t know what to say to the soldier and there is an awkward silence between Kyle and the soldier.

“What’s your name?” asks the soldier to Kyle.

  “Kyle, what’s yours?” answers Kyle.

  “Lynch,” answers the soldier.

Lynch sees Kristina inside Kyle’s SUV and asks, “That your wife?”

“Yeah, Kristina… I don’t mean to be rude, but the last time I saw you, you were giving me the finger and before that, you let zombies out of the room to get me,” answers Kyle to Lynch.

Lynch chuckles, and replies, “Yeah sorry about that. Guess that was a bad move.”

“Can I help you with something?” asks Kyle to Lynch.

“No sir, I just thought to come talk with you. I have seen you and your wife around here a couple times and I recognized you, but I couldn’t remember from where,” answers Lynch.

“Lynch, you coming on the patrol or not?” asks someone over Lynch’s radio that is attached to Lynch’s belt.

“I have to take this, but I just wanted to apologize about before with the finger and zombies back in Jersey,” answers Lynch to Kyle and then Lynch walks away from Kyle and responds to the person over the radio.

Kyle gets into his SUV and Kristina asks, “What did he want?”

“He was a little strange, but he apologized for giving me the finger and letting the zombies out of the room,” answers Kyle as Kyle starts up his SUV.

“Was he for real?” asks Kristina as Kyle exits the parking lot.

“Hard to tell, but I think so,” answers Kyle.

Kristina looks at the smartwatch that is on her left wrist and she asks, “How do we charge the watch?”

“I think it has a solar charger in it,” answers Kyle.

Kyle pulls into his driveway and Kristina and Kyle exit from Kyle’s SUV and go into their house.

“You in here K?” shouts Kyle as he enters his house.

“Yeah, up here!” shouts Kaden from his bedroom.

Kristina closes the front door and locks it.

Kaden runs down the stairs and over to Kyle and Kristina.

“What have you been up to all day?” asks Kyle.

“Not much, but I was checking out the ACT box in our garage and I was looking at possible ways to hack it,” answers Kaden.

“Quiet,” replies Kyle to Kaden with a low voice.

“Let’s go out back,” says Kyle and Kristina, Kyle, and Kaden go onto their covered back patio.

Kristina checks that the hanging plant is covering the camera and it is.

“We good?” asks Kyle to Kristina.

“Yeah, just keep your voice down,” answers Kristina as she looks at Kyle.

Kyle hands Kaden the smartwatch that Commander Pine left in her office for them.

“Where did you get this?” asks Kaden.

“From a friend. We all got them,” answers Kyle.

“Is it safe to use though?” asks Kaden as he looks at the all-black smartwatch that he is holding in his right hand.

Kyle looks at Kristina as she sits in the chair next to him at the patio table. “We think so, but we’ll have to see,” answers Kyle to Kaden.

“What if they are tracking it?” asks Kaden.

“It’s a risk we are willing to take, but our friend said that the watches aren’t on the server here,” answers Kyle.

“Who is your friend?” asks Kaden.

“That will remain a secret for now, but your mom and I found out some things today,” answers Kyle.

Kaden is still hesitant to wear the smartwatch and Kyle and Kristina see the hesitation in Kaden.

“We found your laptop, but we want to make sure it’s safe to use, before we bring it back here,” says Kristina to Kaden.

“Where is it? Who took it? Was my tablet there also?” asks Kaden.

“Yes, everything was there from the house,” answers Kyle.

Kaden looks at Kyle and asks, “So your friend, who will remain nameless, stole our stuff, gave our stuff back to you, gave you these watches, and you are okay with that?”

  Kyle thinks abou
t Kaden’s questions and Kristina answers, “It’s not that simple, but I think we have to be okay with it. I’m just glad to have our stuff back.”

“I figure we can communicate with these watches, track where we are, and hopefully some other cool things,” says Kyle.

“What else did your friend say?” asks Kaden.

“They didn’t say much, but we will hopefully be in contact with them soon,” answers Kyle.

Kristina can sense that Kaden is still skeptical about the smartwatch and everything that he has heard so far.

“Look K, I know this sounds crazy and it is, but we have to roll with it. We got some good information today and it’s hopefully just the start for us,” says Kristina to Kaden.

Kaden looks at Kristina and says, “Well, I guess I have to trust it.”

Kyle watches Kaden put the smartwatch onto his left wrist.

“I’m not totally sold on the watches and everything we learned today, but I think our source is trying to help us,” says Kyle to Kristina and Kaden.

“Do you two even know how to use a smartwatch?” asks Kaden with a joking tone.

“Yeah, but how about you learn how we can use them to benefit us more around here?” answers Kyle to Kaden.

Kaden turns on his smartwatch and replies, “I’ll see what I can do. I’ll check what security apps this thing has and what network it’s connected to.”

  CHAPTER 12

  DAY 55

“Is that it for today?” asks Kyle to Alex as Ty finishes testing an Asian American female zombie inside the lab.

“We have one more,” answers Alex as he looks down at his tablet.

“Is it okay if Kris and I head out today?” asks Kyle to Alex.

Alex looks at Ty and Ovi and then asks Kyle, “Why? You got a special meeting today or something?”

“No, just want to check on our son is all,” answers Kyle.

“Is Kaden doing okay?” asks Ty with a concerned tone.

“Yeah, we just want to make sure is all,” answers Kristina.

“What do you guys think?” asks Alex to Ty and Ovi.

“How many do we have left?” asks Ovi to Alex.

“One, no, two now. Another was just added to our schedule,” answers Alex as he looks down at his tablet.

Kyle and Kristina look at Ty and Ovi to answer Alex and Ty answers, “I think we can handle two more without them.”

“Are you sure we only have two left?” asks Ovi to Alex.

Alex checks the lab schedule on his tablet and answers, “Yeah, we should have been done for the day after this one but these last two were just added with new orders.”

“If it’s the last two for the day, then I’m fine with them leaving early,” replies Ovi.

“I think the group is fine with you leaving early, we’ll see you tomorrow,” says Alex to Kyle and Kristina.

“Thank you guys, we really appreciate it,” responds Kyle to Alex, Ty, and Ovi.

“See if they can bring both of the subjects in now, we can have ACT run tests on both of them simultaneously,” says Ovi to Alex.

Kyle and Kristina clean off their workstations, say goodbye to Alex, Ty, and Ovi, and exit the lab. Just as Kyle and Kristina are exiting the lab, two scientists dressed in blue hazmat suits enter the lab with two human subjects.

“These are our first two living subjects. You are starting the research with the new injection pens on these subjects today,” says a female scientist to Alex as she pushes a male human subject into the lab on a horizontal silver medical table.

Ty and Ovi look at the sedated Caucasian male human test subject that is secured onto the horizontal silver medical table and Alex looks at the sedated Caucasian female human test subject on another horizontal silver medical table.

Ty looks at the male and female human test subjects and he recognizes the two people.

“Are we really going to perform tests on these two?” asks Ty to Alex.

Alex looks over the orders on his tablet for the two human test subjects and answers Ty, “Yes, we continue with our research. It makes no difference who these two are.”

Kyle and Kristina walk down the interior hallway and Kyle says, “I’m glad we got to leave work early, but something feels off about leaving right now.”

“It’s good that we got to leave a little early, I’m worried about K in CP’s office,” replies Kristina.

Kyle stops walking and he feels this strong feeling to go back into the lab. Kristina stops walking and looks at Kyle and asks, “Are you okay babe?”

The feeling for Kyle to go back into the lab is only getting stronger, but Kyle sees and feels that Kristina wants to leave the building and go check on Kaden in their office.

Kristina sees that Kyle is hesitant to leave the building and Kristina wants to be there for Kyle, but she also wants to check on Kaden.

“I can go check on K and you can go back to the lab,” says Kristina to Kyle.

Kyle looks down the interior hallway at the closed lab entrance door as he thinks about what to do. Kyle is torn as he still has this gut feeling that he is supposed to go back into the lab, but he also does not want Kristina to walk across the base by herself.

“It’s really not a big deal, you can just meet us in the office,” says Kristina to Kyle.

The fear of something happening to Kristina takes over Kyle, and Kyle steps towards Kristina and says, “Let’s go check on K first, but I think I’m going to come back here after we make sure he is okay.”

“That works, I think K and I will go to the mess hall and get some food when you come back here,” replies Kristina to Kyle as they walk towards the elevators.

Kyle and Kristina exit the building where the lab is located, and they walk down a sidewalk towards the building that their office is in.

As Kristina and Kyle are walking down the sidewalk, they both notice that there are far less people around the base than there has been over the past couple of days.

Lynch sees Kyle and Kristina walking down the sidewalk and he runs over to them.

“Great, this guy again,” says Kyle with a sarcastic tone to Kristina as he sees Lynch jogging towards them.

“Hey guys,” says Lynch to Kyle and Kristina with a smile on his face.

“Hello,” replies Kyle to Lynch as he and Kristina keep walking down the sidewalk.

“Where are you guys going in such a hurry?” asks Lynch as he starts to walk with Kyle and Kristina.

“Just have to check on something is all,” answers Kristina as she walks with Kyle down the sidewalk and towards the building that their office is in.

“How’s your son doing?” asks Lynch.

Kyle stops walking and glares at Lynch.

Kristina stops walking and she looks at Kyle.

Lynch sees that Kyle is glaring at him and Lynch notices that just the mere mentioning of Kyle’s son gets his attention and concern.

“No need to give me the death stare, but I was just wondering how he was doing,” says Lynch to Kyle.

  “He’s fine,” replies Kyle.

“Good, just making sure, Commander Pine told me about you guys,” responds Lynch with a cocky tone.

“You’ve been in touch with her?” asks Kristina to Lynch.

“Yes, but only briefly,” answers Lynch.

Kristina is about to respond to Lynch when Kyle interrupts, “Glad to hear it. Tell her we said hello.”

“Oh I will, I’m sure she’ll be in touch with you shortly,” responds Lynch and as Lynch finishes his response, he shows Kyle and Kristina the smartwatch on his left wrist and it is the same one that Kyle, Kristina, and Kaden were given by Commander Pine.

Kyle tries to read the tone and body language of Lynch, and Kyle isn’t sure if he’s being genuine, cocky, helpful, or what, as Lynch has this half smile on his face, but also this deviant look in his eyes.

“I’m sure I’ll see you around,” says Lynch and then he walks away from Kyle and Kristina.

  Kyle watc
hes Lynch walk away from them and Kyle says, “That’s exactly why I don’t want you and K walking around here alone.”

“I could take him, but I agree,” replies Kristina.

Kyle and Kristina enter the building where their office is located, go up the elevator, and make their way down the interior hallway and over to their closed office door.

Kristina enters the combination into the number pad, and she opens the office door.

Kaden, who is sitting in the office chair, looks at Kyle and Kristina as they enter the office and Kaden jokes, “What took you guys so long?”

“Sorry, we had like twenty new subjects today,” answers Kristina.

Kyle sees that Kaden has his laptop and tablet turned on as he sits at the desk.

“Did anyone come by here?” asks Kyle to Kaden.

“No, it’s been pretty quiet besides a couple people walking down the hallway,” answers Kaden.

Kristina looks at Kaden’s tablet as it is on the desk and Kristina asks, “Are you connected to the internet?”

“Yeah, it’s been a solid connection today,” answers Kaden.

Kyle sees a large stack of papers on the desk and Kyle asks Kaden, “What did you print?”

Kaden looks at the large stack of papers and answers, “Oh, I printed the article that I’ve been trying to get you to read.”

Kyle worries about the security risk of Kaden printing the article and Kyle asks Kaden, “Did you use CP’s secured server?”

“Yeah, I’m on it now. I’ve only been on that server and stayed off the main connection. CP had a pretty nice setup here,” answers Kaden.

“You want to go get some food K?” asks Kristina to Kaden.

  “Yeah, I’m starving,” answers Kaden.

“Turn off the devices,” says Kyle to Kaden.

  “Are you sure?” asks Kaden.

“Yeah, I don’t want them to be tracked,” answers Kyle.

“I don’t think they will be tracked, they are on the secure server,” replies Kaden.

“But why keep them on?” asks Kristina.

Kaden thinks about Kristina’s question and answers, “There isn’t a reason right now, but can I take my tablet back home?”
