“I don’t need to…”
“My God.” Kit looked at me exactly how I didn’t want to be looked at.
“Can we go back downstairs?”
“Hell no, not after you’ve told me that."
I frowned and tried to walk around him only for him to catch hold of me and catch my mouth with his.
The sudden change in the tension I felt, meant Kit could easily catch me off guard and my eyes actually shot open with the shock. When he gripped hold of me and pulled me closer, I couldn’t stop myself from lowering to his touch and melting into his arms. The embarrassment I’d just felt faded almost instantly and in its place desire and heat wrapped around my body along with Kit’s arms.
“We should go back downstairs,” I said as I felt both of us getting so heated.
Kit shook his head against my neck and kissed the bare skin. “My brothers already fantasise just looking at you, no way am I taking you back down there with that look on your face."
I frowned and pulled away. “Your brothers do not fantasise about me."
“Eve, I doubt any straight man wouldn’t fantasise about you."
I rolled my eyes. “You have to say that, you’re my boyfriend."
Kit rose his eyebrows and smiled. “True."
I hit him then and made a girly sound that made him smile. “You’re not gonna notice them checking you out, Eve, they’re too smart to get caught…”
I frowned and thought about what he’d said. He honestly did believe that his brothers were checking me out, as well as every other guy on the planet who saw me, and I felt sorry for him. It may have sounded self-centred but Kit honestly saw something completely different to everyone else and I was thankful for it. Because he saw me the way he did, it meant he had the ability to make me feel flawless but despite his best efforts, I didn’t believe the things he was saying about me.
“I can teach you if you like?”
I must have looked like a weirdo pulling the face I did – “Teach me to notice your brothers checking me out?”
Kit laughed. “Not that, I can teach you to finger,” he said as he nuzzled his face back into my neck.
I rolled my eyes and pulled away from him. “Kit!”
“Eve!” He mimicked my accent and I hated that it made me smirk.
“Don’t say that!”
“Say what – Eve, finger yourself?” He smiled against my lips before kissing me.
“You’re making me feel so embarrassed."
“Good, I love making you crumble."
Kit then bent down and lifted me up so my legs wrapped around his back. I was wearing a dress with black leggings which meant the tight fabric felt as if Kit’s hands were directly gripping my arse cheeks as he carried me over to the bed.
Sitting back against the headboard with me on top of him, Kit spoke against my ear and sent a shiver down my body.
“Do you know what the thought of you fingering that pussy does to me, Eve?”
My eyes fluttered shut before his hands even made their way up between my dress and to my skin where they settled at my middle.
“Kit,” I gasped breathlessly as I felt his hardness press between my legs, my body started rocking against it before I could give fair warning to my brain to stop it.
“It’s so hard going slow with you, Eve, you drive me insane."
I agreed and nodded whilst closing my eyes and humming against his hardness. I felt Kit’s hands gripping me hard so that my body would stop rocking and it made me look down at him. I was embarrassed that he actually had to stop me yet again.
“I’m sorry,” I said, feeling my face flush red as I attempted to climb off.
“Don’t,” Kit held onto me tightly so I could barely shift and I pushed my hair out of my face so I could look at him.
“It’s so hard but I wanna go slow with you, Eve. It’s foreign to me and hard as fuck but I want you to know that this isn’t just a fuck to me. I wanna know you in every way before getting caught up in sex. Once I get a taste of you, I know I’m not gonna be able to stop."
His words sent a voltage straight between my legs and I needed to get off of him more than ever. A surge of confidence was coming from nowhere with the desire he filled me with and I was ready to strip on top of Kit and make it happen without even knowing how.
“I have to get off of you,” I said, expressing my need.
He seemed to understand and nodded, letting go of my waist so I could slip off of his body and lay beside him.
After a short while of laying apart, I felt my body lower to a simmer until it calmed down completely and I was able to look at Kit again who was staring at me from my side.
“What?” I asked, not realising until then that he’d been looking at me for a while.
“Nothing,” he smiled, but something seemed to be bothering him and I wanted to know what put the doubt in his eyes.
“Go pick a film, Blondie,” he said whilst pointing to his cabinet where a ton of DVDs was piled.
“You sure you want me to pick a film? What if I pick badly?”
“They’re my DVDs,” he smirked and I rolled my eyes, feeling stupid.
I found one quickly and handed it to him whilst lounging back onto his bed, he had the most comfortable bed ever. Whenever I was lying in it, I instantly felt tired. Adding Kit’s heat and body to the equation meant for a yawning mess.
“Lord of the Rings, seriously?” he asked, staring at me and grinning.
“Yeah,” I yawned. “I love Lord of the Rings."
Kit didn’t say anything else, just smirked, shook his head and got up to put it on.
I laid ogling him as he stood before his huge TV that was wall-mounted, he really was a sight for sore eyes and my eyes were definitely sore…
“Come here, you nerd,” he said as he got back onto the bed and pulled me into his side.
“Don’t think I’ve ever met a girl who loves Lord of the Rings."
Kit pulled himself back so he was sitting against the pillows and he pulled me close to him so my head rested against his side.
“You can’t have met very many decent girls then…” I commented and I didn’t have to look at him to know he was smirking.

The man in the mask, always his eyes. His eyes taunted me like nothing else because it was the only part of him I could see beneath the thick dark mask he had on. There were at least ten of them. All dressed the same, all dressed fully in black wearing masks and handling guns like a set of army men on a mission.
His deep grey eyes, they haunted me. Maybe it was because they were the last thing I saw before I passed out and true to the way the story goes every time, only seconds later, I felt myself falling into the darkness and fear. Only to be brought back to only moments earlier.
It was fucked up how my brain would replay the same scenes and bring back the same memories over and over.
“Just kill her!”
My eyes opened to the same scene. The same scene that had been playing over and over in my mind and the fact that I knew I was dreaming, made it so much worse because I couldn’t escape it.
His words were like razor blades on my skin as I stared up at the grizzly man who only seconds before had done the worst damage to me.
He’d murdered my family in front of me.
Now they were deciding what to do with me and my body hurt so bad that I prayed to be put out of my misery because I knew I had nothing to live for anyway. A sob broke free knowing my family were gone, brutally murdered. I wanted nothing more than to join them when I heard a huge bang and a ton of commotion. My head had already hit the floor with a thud and my eyes blurred as I continued to sob until I felt hands on me. This was it, this was when I was going to die.

“Eve,” a gentle shake and hearing his voice pulled me hard from my nightmare I was having and as I opened my eyes I stared into Kit’s, losing myself in them.
“You’re okay, it was a nightmare,” he said whilst loo
king away and pulling me into him.
Suddenly it was like I gained consciousness and I stared around his room, making myself familiar with my surroundings.
“Did I scream?” I asked, hoping to God I hadn’t caused another scene.
“No. You were sobbing.” His voice broke, but not the type of breakage that meant he was crying but the type of noise that let me know how angry he was and he held me tighter whilst saying the words.
“I’m fine,” I said whilst pulling away, I didn’t want Kit to pity me. I hated that. “I’m sorry,” I said whilst rubbing my cheeks clean. “It couldn’t have been a pretty sight."
“Don’t be sorry,” he said almost instantly. “Have you had help with these nightmares, have you spoken to someone?”
I nodded, knowing we hadn’t spoken about it before. Kit never asked about my parents and I had wondered why. At first, I figured It was because he didn’t want to pry too much but if he wanted to know me so bad, I would have expected him to ask by now.
I nodded again. “Only about fifty. I got sick of reliving the same things over and over – explaining what happened over and over to different people and having them rack my brain for answers on how to make it stop."
“The ones who put you through it, they need to pay,” he said with anger and it made me look at him as he got up off of the bed.
“What do you mean?”
“The ones who murdered your family and kidnapped you,” he said as he walked around the room.
My frown deepened as I stared at him.
“How do you know that’s what happened? I’ve never told you."
I shifted to the end of the bed and eyed Kit, careful not to miss a thing.
He just shook his head. “It’s obvious, Eve. Your family are dead and you have nightmares about it and how it nearly happened to you too, it’s not that hard to see."
“Am I that easy to read?”
“Actually, no. You’re the hardest person to read."
Looking at him, he came closer and pulled me up so I was standing with him.
“I have the hardest time trying to work you out, Blondie. It keeps me on my toes."
I nodded and gave him a simple smile as he caressed my face.
“It’s eleven o’clock, do you want me to take you home or do you wanna stay here?” he asked as I glanced back at his bed, knowing how easily we were both to get wrapped up in each other.
“I should probably go home,” I said, looking up at him.
I could see the regret in his face but he knew, too, that staying would only result in us having sex and Kit had made it clear that he wasn’t up for that yet - another thing about him that confused me.

In Kit’s car, I rested my head against the door and closed my eyes briefly, seconds later I felt Kit’s hand gently pressing on my leg to wake me up.
“We’re here, baby,” he said and I wanted to crawl onto his lap, he sounded so perfect and I just wanted to sleep with him and feel safe in his arms. I realised how pathetic that sounded but something about being with Kit made me feel that safety that I wanted so badly.
As I sat up and yawned, I looked over at him, he was smiling and he gently pulled me over so he could kiss me.
“Go to bed,” he smirked and I nodded before pulling away and getting out of his car. I all but waddled to my front door and as I glanced back, Kit was watching me and studying me. When he saw me looking, he smiled and gave me a small wave. He looked so cool that I wanted to stand at my door and watch him leave but I knew he wouldn’t leave until my door was shut and locked behind me so I rushed inside and kicked my shoes off.
After that night, Kit had been working every spare hour which meant I only saw him at college. Three days later, on a Friday, my birthday came and I wasn’t in the mood for celebrating. I’d not been up for any type of celebration since my family had died and today was no exception.
Not many people knew about my birthday and I wanted to keep it that way. But I knew it was, which meant for some strange reason I wanted to dress nicely. Glancing at my phone, I grinned when I saw a text from Lilly, with so many capitals that I wasn’t sure if they were a mistake or if she was just trying to sound loud.
* * *
HAPPPYYYYY BIRTHDDAYYYY!!! Can’t believe I’m away on your birthday, I’ll ring you later!
* * *
Lilly was often asked to do weddings at the last minute, the number of brides that were let down by con artists was ridiculous. Meaning Lilly found herself picking up the pieces almost all the time. The current wedding she’d been asked to attend, she had actually rejected until I told her to accept it. She was offered double pay to drive all the way to Cornwall at the last minute and pretty up five bridesmaids and a bride.
We could celebrate my birthday at any time and to be honest, I wasn’t looking forward to her plans anyway. I already knew they involved clubbing and alcohol.
Searching in my cupboard, I found what I wanted to wear and I made more of an effort instead of just wearing my skinnies and a top. Instead, I opted for a blue dress that had embroidery around the hem and I pulled my black ballerina style shoes from the shoe cupboard before meeting my grandparents in the kitchen.
I squealed and shot back as both of them released a set of party poppers that shot into my hair.
“Happy Birthday!” they both said in unison and I pulled a section of my hair to get the dangly stringy thing from it.
“Thank you.” I chuckled and placed the confetti down before taking a seat with them.
My grandma had already made tea and I gulped mine, thanking her for my birthday cards that had piled up in the last week.
I didn’t have that many family members so the pile wasn't actually that big but as I opened each of them money kept falling out and my grandad grinned. “That’ll pay for the party poppers,” he said whilst smirking at my grandma.
I shook my head and grinned before taking a bite out of my toast and suddenly my grandma approached me with a box.
“What’s this?” I asked, taking it from her.
She just bobbed her head and smiled, waiting for me to open it.
Placing the toast down, I did just that and pulling back the tissue paper I found a selection of books.
“These were your mother's. When she lived with us, she lived and breathed these books. I know you love to read, too, and she would have been about your age. We want you to have them."
“Grandma,” I said and stared at the books as a tear fell from my face, I picked up one of the books and held it to my chest as I thought about my mother.
Today was my twenty-first birthday and I wanted more than anything for her and my dad, as well as my brother, to be here.
“They’d want you to be happy, Eve,” my grandad said, reaching his hand out and placing it on top of mine.
I nodded as my grandma handed me an envelope and I looked at her confused, I’d already opened their card.
“This is from us,” she said, handing it to me and as I opened it, I noticed a wad of cash inside.
“Whether you buy a new camera or put it towards one of those Macs you want for your photos, happy birthday.” She smiled, picking up her cup of tea.
“Grandma, this is too much,” I said, closing the envelope and looking at them both.
“No, it’s not,” my grandad said from across the table.
I didn’t want to argue over the obscene amount of money they’d handed me. I knew my grandparents weren’t poor but they weren’t rich either and they’d already spent far more on me than they should have ever had to.
“You’re gonna be late for college,” my grandma reminded me whilst pointing to the clock and I nodded, getting up and finishing my slice of toast.
“Happy Birthday,” my grandad said, walking around the table and placing his arms around me.
I smiled and inhaled his masculine scent, the scent only a grandad could have. He smelled clean after his morning shower and I hugged him tightly back so my fa
ce squished against his shoulder.
“You’re both the best!” I said before going to give my grandma a hug.
“Have fun today,” she said whilst holding me at arm’s length and she shook her head as if she couldn’t believe what she was looking at.
“You’ve changed so much,” she said, holding down a smile so she didn’t start crying.
I did the same and nodded as my grandad came to her aid. That morning had been a lot more emotional than I had planned and as I picked up my bag and left the house, I had to wipe away a tear and compose myself.
I closed my eyes briefly and took a deep breath before approaching the gate where I looked up to see Kit’s car parked out front. I hoped he hadn’t seen me wiping my face.
“Are you alright?”
Obviously, he had seen me wiping my face and his face was serious as he waited for a reply.
“Yeah,” I nodded before opening the door and getting in, “just been a weird morning."
“Well, that’s no way to start your birthday…”
I shot a look at him and he smirked. “How do you know it’s my birthday?”
Lilly, that bitch. I bet she found a way of telling him.
“I have my sources,” he said, getting ready to start the car.
“Did Lilly tell you?”
“No, but she has been staying over a lot recently,” he smiled, turning the steering wheel. Looking at the surrounding area and the roads Kit was driving down, I thought about what he’d said and wondered why the hell Lilly had been staying over so much.
“Where are we going?” I asked, still bewildered by what he’d said.
“The beach."
“The beach?”
He nodded casually and I eyed him some more.
“You do know we’re supposed to be at college today?”
“Yep, but it’s your birthday and it’s a scorching hot day so we’re going to the beach."
I shook my head, feeling not only confused about where we were going but also about what he’d said about Lilly.
“So, what did you mean about Lilly?”
