Phantom of the Library Page 22

  “I’ll definitely take that deal.”

“But these two demon monsters have to get the girls ready in the morning,” I said. “Set your alarm. I don’t want them waking us up.”

“We’ll do it,” Graham said, so agreeably that I found that as sexy as anything. He was great at keeping the kids on a schedule and making sure they ate proper meals when the rest of us got caught up in work, while Byron played with them and helped them with homework, true to his word to be a stay-at-home dad when he wasn’t helping establish a familiar library.

“Mm, goodnight,” I said, closing my eyes. “I hope it worked.”

I didn’t need to worry. Byron was right. Nine months later, almost on the dot, our son was born. We named him Fiore, which seemed like as good a demon demigod name as any, and despite having the blood of two dark-haired dads, he had golden hair when he was born like me. i had given up my royal blood, but I felt more like me than ever before, and Fiore’s sweet little face reminded me of when Harris was born. But he also had a tail and one black wing and one shimmering Ethereal wing in his pure form, and before long, even as he was learning to walk, his sisters would be giving him wolf-back rides and trying to encourage him to fly, which seemed like a very bad idea.

“Pretty soon,” Jake said, watching out the curtains beside me, “it’ll be time to put them to work during the summer.”

“Maybe you’re right. They have too much time on their hands!” I said, watching Hulda put Fiore atop the tallest gravestone and calling out, “Fly!” Jake was already running out the back door before Fiore face planted into grave dirt, and I got back to browsing the latest issue of Hearth Witch Design. Granite countertops, it seemed, were back this year.

Aw! Over already. This series was just such a fun thing to write during this stressful summer and I usually had the Property Brothers and Home Town and House Hunters and so on running in the background noise to keep me inspired! But if you’re already missing this world, well, you might have guessed that I still have more story to tell about Jenny, Bevan and Lord Variel…and all of familiar-kind. I’m excited to delve into the lives of Jenny, an adorable pastry-chef toad-shifter hoping to overcome her tragic past, and the demons she finds herself inadvertently promised to serve thanks to her oath with Bevan. Will Bevan turn evil or will she redeem him? Can a high demon cope with being banished to Etherium? Devils don’t usually get cast into heaven…

First, though, it is time for…well, two things. A four day weekend for me to just veg with the latest installments of Delicious in Dungeon, Takane and Hana, and Yona of the Dawn manga…and then, the final book of Rayner, Lisbeth and the vampire clan’s story, Kill Me Softly. It’s been a dark journey for them, and they deserve that happy ending.

I am keeping busy! And I hope you are all keeping well. It’s been such a hard, hard summer for a lot of people and I am trying to balance the stress weighing down on me and the hope that my stories can bring a little escape and joy.
