Since my coauthor, Susan, is Jewish, we see this as a Muslim-Jewish collaboration that celebrates the benevolent Christians my family met in Connecticut, like the Reverend Don Hodges and his wife, Katie Hodges, who proved my mother’s belief in human goodness. I hope this book sheds light on how hard it is to leave your country behind, and offers ways to help other immigrants feel at home, while honoring the quiet heroes who treated me and my relatives with respect, generosity, and kindness that we’ll never forget.
