"Right. I got all I want right here. The people who hurt you are either dead or under indictment. I'm helping you heal the holes they made in you. You're happy teaching. I got my own company, Gustavo working for me, a stable of horses, so no I don't need an apology from Jeb. Life could not be better than it is right now."
She finished her pie, and I tugged her hand to move her up on my lap. "My beautiful wife is making me a daddy. Never in a million years did I think I'd have a chance at something so wonderful as a child with a woman I loved so much. We'll give him all the things we never had. Stability. Integrity. Unconditional love. He'll learn to ride young. No bulls like Torrez' kid."
"It could be a girl." Damn, a mini Cecelia would have me wrapped around her finger. I'd love it.
"Doesn't matter. That child will be loved."
"Yes. If you love her like you love me, she'll be one very happy girl."
"But even without all that. If it were just you and me and nothing else, I'd still love you more than life. You're all that I am and all I'll ever have. Solely mine."
She ran her fingers through my hair and man it felt good. "You too, Zook. All I ever wanted but was too afraid to dream of having. It's frightening, you know. Having so much to lose. I could lose you, the baby…"
I kissed her forehead. "It is scary. But totally worth the risk. You're strong and you're brave. Together we're unstoppable. We won't lose it. We'll protect it till our dying day. Okay?"
She nodded. "Okay."
I picked my wife up and carried her to our bed. Then I showed her how unstoppable we were.
