I know what you’re probably thinking. That’s it?! Where’s the rest of it? And you’re right… This book is a little shorter than usual. When I was outlining The Lazarus Codex, I initially decided it would be nine books long. I initially imagined books five and six would only take me one book to tell. Obviously, that didn’t work out. Then it took me a little longer to deal with the fallout from those events.
Casting Shadows and Lost Soul were initially slated to be a single book as well, but that book would’ve been really long—almost double the length of most of the Lazarus books. I decided to break the book in half and do two slightly shorter books instead. Thus, Casting Shadows and Lost Soul have been the two shortest entries in the series so far. Despite the length, I think they are still pretty densely packed with story and action.
There’s just one more Lazarus book left to get things wrapped up. It’ll be hard to say goodbye when that happens, but all good things must come to an end.
Khaleda’s Army
If you’ve been reading the Hellbent Halo spinoff series, it won’t come as a surprise to learn that Khaleda has acquired an army, or that Finn kind of owes her. And if you haven’t been reading it, you should! The two stories are intertwined, but also stand apart from each other.
While Lazarus deals with an apocalypse every other month, it seems, Josiah and Khaleda are still working to avert the big one. That quest continues in the forthcoming Hellbent Halo novel, Flesh and Blood. In case you’re wondering where Josiah ran off to in a hurry at the beginning of the book, that’s where you’ll find the answers.
Looking back at Khaleda’s initial appearance in Shallow Grave, she’s come a long way, although she’s still not quite a clear-cut good guy. Then again, she is the Devil’s daughter.
Flesh and Blood will be available in early November.
