The two weeks with Sebastian weren’t all that boring; we got to know each other’s bodies pretty well. Lying on the couch and squeezing my teddy, I wished I was back in his room with his hands all over my naked body. I thought of his tender kisses and his body working its way deeper into mine. I writhed on the couch. He laughed in the distance, and I knew that he could metaphysically sense what I was thinking. It brought a smile to my face.
Was I falling for the blond-haired, green-eyed were-leopard-vampire?
Absolutely.
Was I afraid?
Definitely.
Ralph called to say he was still human. My prayers and wishes had worked.
During those two weeks, Ralph, Devan, and I worked on a number of cases together. Some simple surveillance, two divorce cases, one minor zombie uprising, and a robbery; nothing we couldn’t handle. After the voodoo priest, we all needed a breather from the scary monsters.
Marcus and Melinda were still in lock-up at the Lion's Den. Troy would hold them there until I reached a decision. Should I allow them to be hunted, or should we keep them around and pester Marcus for information on my past? I was waiting for my mind to click into place, and until that happened, Marcus could stay put.
Zachary, the little poker-playing vampire, was being kept in a cross-wrapped coffin for another two weeks. It was his punishment for aiding and abetting the voodoo priest. It was a light sentence, but if he continued to play poker in Léon’s city, Alex would make an example of him, too.
Alex and Genevieve, the emissaries of the Vampire Council, had asked to stay in the city for a while. Léon had agreed.
Sebastian and his brother continued with their power struggle over my affections, but with Charlotte by his side, Léon seemed content not to press the issue. For now.
I had arranged a lunch date with Mel—there was so much we needed to discuss—and my appointments with Seraphine and Désiré were still on schedule. I couldn’t wait to tell them what I’d been up to.
Each of the groups that formed the Were-Animals Alliance had heard about what I had done for Ivy and had invited me to join them; a human had never been formally invited to any of these meetings before, and I felt honored. By attending monthly, I could keep in contact with Shawn and Troy, just in case my wolf or lioness decided they, too, wanted to join my leopard and come out to play.
That was the other reason for hiding out in my basement; I was ignoring the phone calls upstairs and the letters and postcards on the table. After I opened the first one, I couldn’t go through the rest of them. It was a request to visit a colony in Chicago—their King Rat was ill and needed my help; an all expenses trip.
I wanted to help—I knew that I could—but I needed to sort my life out now that I knew what I could do.
Also, I needed time to recover.
And I still had work to do.
