‘Where?’
‘Tell you later.’ Olivia didn’t have time to explain, or justify, but she needed to be somewhere really quickly.
Claire stood on the pavement looking bewildered as Olivia closed the boot and drove off.
Olivia drove across town in a state of urgency. She didn’t think she had ever felt so desperate. Every red light was an enemy and she weaved in and out of traffic like a racing car driver.
The buzzer rang and for a moment her heart sank when no one picked up. She pressed it again.
‘Hello?’ came his voice.
‘It’s me.’
The gates opened and Olivia drove in, abandoning her car in front of the house as the door opened.
‘I want to come home,’ she said quietly, hoping that he still wanted her there.
Tom stood in the doorway with a look of disbelief on his face, before it crumbled and he stepped towards her, picking her up in his strong arms and holding her so tight she could barely breathe. She felt his tears on her neck, and cried her own onto him. She knew he had suffered enough, that he would never do anything like that again, and neither would she. When he carried her through the door she felt elated. As Sarah’s dad had said, Sarah took things because she could. Well this was her life, and she was taking it back. Because she could.
