Bad Guys Finish First: The Sandman and The Librarian (BWWM) (The Sanctuary Series Book 1) Page 12

Lily laughed with joy. The sound came out weird because of her condition and Sandy’s hand tightened around her waist. He tilted her chin back to look at the damage. He leaned forward and placed a kiss on the bandage.

“They told me what happened. I’m sorry, love.” Sandy ran his hand though her hair and massaged the back of her head with his fingers.

She kissed him again, and shook her head with a smile and tapped his leg that had been amputated at the knee. She mouthed: win some, lose some.

“Yeah, I guess I lost something too. Maks got me a hookup with this prosthetics engineer he met in Paris. They are making me a couple of prototypes to use. Right now I have to relax and focus on getting my strength back.”

Lily couldn’t stop the tears. She put her head down on his shoulder as she tried to control her embarrassing emotions. She was surprised to see wetness in Sandy’s eyes as well. She didn’t know how they were sitting here right now. But she wouldn’t question her luck.

She looked up when she heard Nancy running their way. She was followed by Leslie and Tara. The women were smiling happily. She tapped Sandy on the chest and then pointed to Nancy. She didn’t know how to explain what she wanted without words.

Nancy stopped in front of them and looked up at Sandy with wide eyes. She looked nervous but she wasn’t afraid. “Lily said I could stay with her always.”

“That’s what you said?” Sandy asked looking at Lily.

Lily nodded and hid her smile. It was clear from his expression that he was going to accept this. Taking on the care of a little girl was going to be insane, but she knew they would do the best they could.

“Then I hope you like potato soup. It’s all I know how to make. My grandmother was very practical.”

“You’re going to be here too?” Nancy asked with surprise.

“Yeah. If you want Lily, you’re going to get me too. Don’t worry. I’m a lot tougher than I currently look. Just wait until my hair grows back and I get my robotic leg,” he said waggling his eyebrows.

“You’re going to get a robotic leg?” Nancy asked jumping up and down.

Lily smiled. The tears were falling freely down her cheeks. She didn’t try to control them. She wanted to feel this moment with these people. She knew that this was only the beginning.

They needed to figure out what happened with the others. They still had a mission to complete and now they had a little girl to take care of. She took a deep breath and smiled. They could handle this; she was quickly learning they could accomplish anything together.

She didn’t need to ask Sandy how he felt. He was a man of few words. He showed his love in his actions. He’d proven to her repeatedly how much he loved her. She’d never in a million years imagined a life like this. Although it was unexpected, she would treasure it, and God help anyone who tried to take it away.
