“Well, I can’t say I’m not disappointed, Kurt, but that’s life, you know.”
“Yeah, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I just remember you told me if I knew something, don’t keep you in the dark.”
“Yes, and I appreciate the heads up. I really do.”
Michelle looked over at Andrea and she was absolutely glowing with pride.
“Yeah, she knows,” Kurt said, reading her thoughts.
Life definitely didn’t play fair, Michelle thought. Not to get the position was one thing, but to lose out to such an arrogant, underhanded snob really hurt. She didn’t have any proof, but she was just about positive Andrea had probably taken the president up on his offer and slept with him to secure the job. Being a woman of class first, she decided that she would swallow her pride and congratulate Andrea on her new job. Even though she felt like crap as she thought about how hard she worked, Michelle was always of the belief that what God had for her, no one could take away.
“Well, I guess I should go and congratulate her. Excuse me,” Michelle said, parting ways with Kurt.
As she approached Andrea, who was in a conversation with Reggie and a few others, it seemed that her glowing smile turned into a smirk as she saw Michelle approaching.
“Hello Michelle, how are you?” She squealed.
“I’m wonderful. I hear congratulations are in order for you, so I just wanted to come over and tell you I am truly happy for you and I wish you much continued success.”
“Awwwweee. That means so much to me coming from you. You know I was extremely nervous about what decision the station was going to make. You’re absolutely great at what you do.”
“Well thank you, I appreciate that.”
“Hey, don’t give up. You’ll get there. Just remember sometimes you gotta go the extra mile,” Andrea said with a cocky wink of the eye.
If Michelle could have choked her without fear of being arrested, she would have. Instead, she gracefully made her exit from the circle of conversation and went into the bathroom to compose herself. Andrea had all but admitted she had fucked her way into the position. She was proud of it. There was no way Michelle could continue to enjoy the night. It was ruined, and she was ready to leave. She hid out in the bathroom long enough for people to forget she was even at the party, and then she snuck out without saying goodbye to anyone.
In the truck, she drove way past the speed limit, cursing and mumbling as her heart sank into her stomach. It just seemed that sometimes she couldn’t win for losing. Michelle was grateful for everything she had, but it was never a pleasant experience to have something dangled in front of you just to be snatched away. That’s exactly what had been happening to her over the past few weeks. The relationship she’d been waiting for dangled in front of her, and was snatched away. Her dream job dangled in front of her, and was snatched away. She had a right to feel this way, she told herself as her gas light came on.
Michelle had been so engulfed in self-pity, she hadn’t realized she was almost out of gas. She pulled into the nearest gas station and fumbled through her wallet until she found the checking card she was looking for. When she got out to swipe her card, Michelle couldn’t believe her eyes. There was Jay coming out of the gas station walking directly towards her. Even though it was dark, the gas station was well lit. They immediately locked eyes and began a staring match. Neither could believe how fate had brought them in contact with each other again so quickly after their break up.
Jay didn’t know what to say, but he knew he had to say something. He approached her. The closer he got, Michelle just stared without saying a word. As soon as he was in arms reach, she cocked back and slapped him with all her might. He ate it, knowing he deserved it. She gave him another one and he grabbed her by the arms.
“I’m sorry. Look, something happened in my life a long time ago and I’m still paying for it. I didn’t mean to play with your heart.”
“But you did! You did, and you put my life in danger while you did it!”
A car pulling up and coming to an aggressive stop interrupted the two. Before she knew it, Michelle was staring down the barrel of a gun, but then went flying to the concrete when Jay shoved her as hard as he could. As shots rang out, Jay caught two slugs that spun him around and another in his back before he went crashing to the ground.
Skip and Bones kicked open the doors, and they exited from each side of the vehicle clutching guns tightly.
Jay lay on the ground gasping for air, just waiting for the next bullet to put him out of his misery.
Skip and Bones were so focused on Jay, now that he was finally in death’s grip, they didn’t even notice a terrified Michelle on the ground rambling through her purse until she came up with the small chrome pistol, aimed and fired. The first shot struck Skip directly between his eyes and he instantly dropped to the ground. The second shot caught wind, but the third shot got Bones in the shoulders as he aimed his gun at Michelle. The bullet sank into his shoulder breaking the bone, and forcing him to drop the weapon.
Michelle fired round after round while Bones turned to run from cover. Bones caught another bullet in the side before he made it to his car, slammed in reverse and backed out of the gas station wildly. Bones collided with an oncoming car that spun him around, leaving the car folded, and Bones severely injured at the stop light.
Michelle crawled over to Jay who was face down bleeding heavily.
“Somebody call an ambulance, please!” she shouted not knowing if anybody was even there to hear her cry. “Jason? Jason can you hear?” Terrified and shaking uncontrollably, her eyes shot around the parking lot searching for help. “Just hold on if you can hear me. Just please hold on.”
