by Artinian, Christopher

“I think they’re just in shock.”

“Shock? Ha! That’s one word for it,” she said, taking another drink.

Parkes placed his hands on the back of one of the dining chairs and leaned forward. “Nobody but nobody could have anticipated this.”

She let out a long, shuddering breath that told Parkes more than a few tears had been shed. “It wasn’t bad enough that we lost all those vehicles and all those men, but then we lose two choppers as well.”

“We don’t know about the second chopper. They told us about the first, but the last we heard our men were in pursuit of the enemy.”

“The enemy? A couple of stubborn-minded little girls. Are you honestly telling me that you think the second chopper is miraculously going to materialise?” Parkes remained silent. “When was the last time we heard from them?”

Parkes looked at his watch. “Five hours ago.”

“Five hours! FIVE HOURS!” she screamed, standing up and throwing the glass against the wall. It shattered into tiny pieces, and the thick liquid slowly trickled down to the floor. “Listen to me. If we don’t act on this, if we don’t get back the upper hand, we’re going to start losing people. It will come in dribs and drabs at first. They’ll see that our invincible army isn’t so invincible after all.”

  “Yes, ma’am.”

“Six, tomorrow morning, I want the commanders around this table. We’re going to come up with a plan to take Safe Haven. A plan that can’t fail this time. Do you hear me?” A single tear trickled down Olsen’s cheek.

Parkes knew it was pointless trying to reason with her. He had never seen her so enraged before. He nodded respectfully. “Yes, ma’am,” he said before retracing his steps out of the room.

Olsen grabbed another glass and filled it. She took one, two, three big gulps then placed it down on the table. She felt another tear then another form in her eyes. “Wren!” she almost spat the name out. “By the time I’m done, I’m going to have your head on a spike, you little bitch.”

  Christopher Artinian

Christopher Artinian was born and raised in Leeds, West Yorkshire. Wanting to escape life in a big city and concentrate more on working to live than living to work, he and his family moved to the Outer Hebrides in the north-west of Scotland in 2004, where he now works as a full-time author.

Chris is a huge music fan, a cinephile, an avid reader and a supporter of Yorkshire county cricket club. When he’s not sat in front of his laptop living out his next post-apocalyptic/dystopian/horror adventure, he will be passionately immersed in one of his other interests.
