The Fifth Justice (Michael Gresham Legal Thrillers Book 10) Page 27

by John Ellsworth

For Judge Chloe Constance, court was in recess.

Justin drove the judge straight home, where they picked up Andrew Junior, the little boy. Before nightfall, they had done, with the boy, Navy Pier, the Shedd Aquarium and Baskin-Robbins. As the day went along, Chloe held the child and took his hand at every opportunity. He was delivered home, to his bed, asleep in his mother’s arms, where he was safe and he was loved and he was adored. The following day, the judge returned to her official duties at the District Court where she hasn’t missed a day since.

Chloe continued working with Dr. Zastrow. Slowly, her personalities “shook hands,” as he put it, getting to communicate with each other and Chloe. Then integration could take place. She pushed hard, unwilling to settle for the kind of wild Maddy aspired to and the kind of violence Justin enjoyed. Over time, they became more like Chloe. They didn’t completely go away but neither was Chloe like a pot about to boil over.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit beckoned. Chloe was elevated and began writing opinions for the court that caught the notice of other circuits nationwide.

Two years later, she was nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court where, once confirmed, she became the fifth female justice in the history of the Court.
