Lies of Men Page 23

by Dana Killion

  I let him have his say, seeing the pride stripped away from a man who never expected he could be played. I took a sip of tea and waited for him to finish, waiting for the discomfort of the moment to stretch on for a bit longer than necessary.

  “I know all about it. I’ve known almost from the beginning. I just didn’t know whose side you were on.”

  Borkowski stared at me, letting the revelation sink in, and then shoved his hands deep into his pockets. “You’d think I would know to be a little more suspicious.” He shrugged and bit down on his lip. “Hmm. I guess you’re the better journalist. What did you think, that they had paid me off to participate?”

  I paused, considering my words. “I entertained the possibility that promises had been made, let’s put it that way.”

  “I understand.” He nodded. “I don’t know if this was the politically correct move, but I called Molina this morning and told him his services were no longer required. We’d pay off the balance as it was laid out in his contract, but we would take it from here on our own. I don’t doubt he was on the phone to Ramelli half a second later, so be prepared for that angry phone call.”

  “I don’t think there will be one. My attorney delivered a letter last night pointing out that Mr. Ramelli violated his contract when he entered into a side business relationship with Molina. He’s been removed from the board.”

  Borkowski looked at me, confusion on his face, then let out the biggest laugh I’d ever heard from him.

  “Well, aren’t you full of surprises? I think you just made my year. You’re not a woman to piss off.” He looked at me with a smile and new respect in his eyes.

  There was a knock on the door. Brynn. I motioned her in and gave her a big hug. Then I turned toward Borkowski.

  “I called her before I called Molina,” he said. “And yes, I gave her a raise too. We’ll figure out how to trim back nonessentials elsewhere. Together.”

  I stepped over and gave him a hug, something I’d never done before. At first he was stiff and uncomfortable, not knowing how to respond. Then he let out another chuckle and put his arm around Brynn, drawing her into the group embrace.

  “Don’t get any ideas,” I said to Borkowski, grinning. “Technically, I’m still your boss; traditional gender roles be damned!”

  About the Author

  Dana Killion grew up in a small town in northern Wisconsin, reading Nancy Drew and dreaming of living surrounded by tall buildings. A career in the apparel industry satisfied her city living urge and Nancy Drew evolved into Cornwell, Fairstein, and Evanovich.

  * * *

  One day, frustrated that her favorite authors weren’t writing fast enough, an insane thought crossed her mind. “Maybe I could write a novel?”

  * * *

  Silly, naïve, downright ludicrous. But she did it. She plotted and planned and got 80,000 words on the page. That manuscript lives permanently in the back of a closet. But the writing bug had bitten.

  * * *

  Lies of Men is her third novel. Dana lives in Chicago and Florida with her husband and her kitty, Isabel, happily avoiding temperatures below fifty.
