“Captain?” Walter said to get my attention.

I opened my eyes and the food was on the table.

“Are you okay sir?” he asked.

“Just tired Lieutenant. I haven't slept well for some time,” I said.

  “Bad dreams, sir?” he asked.

“Good dreams actually, I just wish I could understand them better,” I said.

“You remember them sir? I never remember my dreams,” Private Hampton said.

I saw Traci looking at me as though she knew something she was afraid to tell me.

“Yes private I do remember my dreams, at least these dreams, I guess because they seem so real,” I said.

Nothing more was said through the meal, and I had no idea how it tasted since I was occupied with thoughts of the dream and my lack of concern for Nicole's leg. I had to have seen the gash, and how much blood she lost, but it seemed like it was the last concern on my mind. I seemed more worried she might try biting the boy that pushed her than I was about her injury. What kind of mother was I to not worry about my child's injury?

To be sure I loved being these two little girls mother, but still. I wondered if it was because of what happened between their father and I. Just what kind of monster had he turned me into? He was the one who had done it not this war, him the man that was my whole world. The man I wanted to spend ten mortal life times with.

That was strange. How did I know we would be able to spend ten life times together, and why had the thought come out as ten mortal life times? Is that what he had done, somehow taken me from being a mortal to being an immortal? There had to be answers and I wondered if maybe Traci had them. If she did I doubted she would be willing to share them at this point. Somehow she was afraid of me and I had no idea what I had done to cause her to fear me.

“Private will you drop me at the airport and then take Lieutenant Strong and his wife home. I'll be sure to let your commander know you did a wonderful job, I just need to have some time before the plane leaves to think,” I said.

“I can do that Captain, but you'll be sitting at the airport about three hours waiting on that airplane,” he said.

  “I understand Private,” I responded.
