The Marriage Pledge Page 24

by Jean Oram

“What was that about?” Moe asked, when Amy came to work alongside him again.

“I think my mom might be…” Her eyes dampened. She felt as though they might one day have the relationship she’d always dreamed of having. Not quite yet, but the signs were there that with a little effort from both of them they might get there soon.

Moe had been studying her and he gave a soft smile. “I’m glad for you both.”

  “Thanks. Me, too.”

He dumped ice into a line of waiting glasses and she began filling them with soda as a Michael Bublé song began to play. Amy glanced toward the jukebox. “Did Zach just choose this from the new list of songs?” For some reason the selection made her want to chuckle.

“He might just be a romantic under all that training, scars and weaponry,” Moe replied. He glanced down at her feet and gave her a stern frown. “I can’t believe you’re wearing your heels tonight as part of your nursing-shoes-and-their-impact-on-your-tips bet. Shouldn’t you be kind to your feet and lower back, Miss Mom-To-Be?”

“I’m not that far along yet, and I didn’t want to leave you hanging on the bet’s outcome.” She gave him a sweet look, tapping him on the nose.

He glanced at the bustling pub, which was practically bursting at the seams with well-wishers. He said wryly, “Gee, I wonder which shoes will be the winners.”

She laughed. “Maybe I just wanted to look sexy.”

  “You always look sexy.”

“You think so?” She leaned into him, her fingers toying with the buttons on his shirt.

  “I know so.”

  “Why? Because you’re so smart?”

He kissed her gently, his arms loose around her waist. “And handsome.”

She reached between them and rubbed her still-flat stomach. “I hope this little one will be as smart and handsome as you are.”

“Cute babies, I tell you. It’s gonna happen.” He smiled with contentment as he drew her close again. “I love being in love.”

“How did we miss it for so very long when we’re as good-looking and charming as we are?”

“Good things come to those who wait, and even better things come to those who date their best friend over and over again until they get it right.”

She laughed. “It’s a good thing we’re stubborn.”

  “I prefer persistent.”

  “That’s a good word. So is strong-willed.”

“Just like my wife.” He gave her a quick peck on the forehead. “I’m a very lucky man.”

“I’d like one of those right here, please.” She tapped her lips with a finger, giving him an impatient look.

  “Hey, that’s my line.”

  “It’s a good one.”

“That’s very true,” he murmured, complying with her wishes and giving her a deep, lingering kiss.

As Amy slid her arms around his neck, playing with the longish hair at the back of his neck, she knew that while he might think he was the man with everything, when it came to having everything a person could possibly want, she was the luckiest woman in Blueberry Springs. Maybe even the world.

Sneak Peek from Mail Order Soulmate

Zach opened the front door, the security system chirping due to the doorway breach as frigid mountain air blasted him. He was facing a woman in a thin, faded jacket and a backpack. Not a delivery then. Relief washed over him. He hadn’t ordered anything else and forgotten during his latest late-night shopping spree. That was a good thing.

The woman was tall, nearly his height, her golden hair revealing a hint of darkness at the roots, the wavy curls demonstrating a similar softness to her generous curves. She looked like a woman worth holding, someone a man his size could really put his arms around and enjoy, knowing she was there, a grounding force.

  Zach blinked and shook himself.

He was lonely. That was definitely the problem. And shopping was not filling that gaping hole.

“Zach Forrester?” she asked. She had a British accent and he worked to place it. It wasn’t flat like Yorkshire, and it lacked an upper class polish. It was more similar to the classic accent, as if she’d grown up in one of the older downtown neighborhoods or along the edges of London, sneaking smokes and liquor after school, and kissing boys in out-of-the-way corners. Generally getting into a typical teenaged version of trouble he’d never had the time to participate in while growing up.

  “Yes? I’m Zach,” he replied.

Beyond her on the sidewalk was an infant tucked under a fluffy blanket in a cheap stroller, a diaper bag on the walkway beside it. No car at the curb in front of his two-story. Was she lost? Looking for donations? In need of a safe place to duck into while she called her family—a man in an unmarked van following her, and giving her the creeps?

And there he went again. Worst case scenario. Abductions were rare in real life. This whole living and thinking like a civilian was harder than it looked.

  “I’m Catherine Tidsdale,” she said.

He made a hum of acknowledgment, curious as to why she’d said her name as though it was one he should know.

“We met on Email Brides and Grooms,” she continued. “I’m your wife.”

  About the Author

Jean Oram is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling romance author. Inspiration for her small town series came from her own upbringing on the Canadian prairies. Although, so far, none of her characters have grown up in an old schoolhouse or worked on a bee farm. Jean still lives on the prairie with her husband, two kids, big shaggy dog and persnickety cat, where she can be found out playing in the snow or hiking.
