I looked at one of them straight in the eyes and reached up grabbing their arm stopping them for a moment. “Graham, the one in the middle. He came in here to save me and they attacked. They abducted me and they are the ones that trashed the other room.”
The guys stopped and looked over at Graham and the others. They quickly removed Graham from the floor, pulling him to his feet, and setting him down on the floor next to the bed. I reached my hand over to grab his but found him unconscious, his head hanging low. I screamed out, unsure if he was even breathing. There was blood trickling from lips down the front of him.
“Help him!”
I couldn’t even put my fear into words at that moment. The cops were rushing to him, laying him down on the ground. One of them came to me and picked me up, cradling me and taking me from the room. I was fighting them but they didn’t stop until they reached the end of the hall where medics came rushing in. One of them motioned to the officer carrying me, taking me down the steps and out a back door.
I expected to meet the dark night, but instead there were flashing blue and reds everywhere. The officer set me down on a gurney and the medics surrounded me, checking my wounds and anything else they needed to. “I’m alright. I’m alright. I need to know where Graham is.”
One of the medics looked at the other and nodded, letting me sit up. The woman stood in front of me and spoke quietly. “They are working on it. We need to get you cleaned up or you can’t go anywhere. You won’t be any help to him like this. Do you understand?”
I stared at her for a moment and then nodded, tears streaming down my face. I couldn’t lose him, not again, and not like that.
Chapter Eighteen
Lindsey
“Lindsey,” Kitt yelled out, looking at the cop and pointing over at me.
I lifted my arm and flinched, realizing whatever they had done while I was out must have seriously pulled some muscles. I was covered in more bruises then clean skin at that point, and the cuts from the rope on my wrists were painful and deep. Still, even through them insisting on care, all I wanted to know was where Graham was.
Kitt ran up to me and hugged me tightly, ignoring my groans. “Oh my God. What happened?”
I took in a deep breath, trying to gather my thoughts. “Um, it was some rogue guy from St. Paul and Will. He was working against Graham the whole time.”
Kitt was shocked. “Why? I mean he was a stuffed shirt lawyer type with too much money so I guess that explains half of it. But I thought he was Graham’s friend.”
“I did too,” I replied. “It’s all confusing. Kitt I need to know where he is. IO need to make sure he is ok. He saved my life like freaking batman.”
Kitt looked at me for second and then grinned. “I knew someone would end up being Batman. Alright, give me just a second and I’ll find out where he is.”
I shook my head and looked around, holding the medic blanket around my shoulders. There were people everywhere trying to figure out what the hell was going on. It was all so jumbled in my head but at that point I didn’t care. I just wanted to see him, know he was okay. Talk to him even.
After a few minutes of pacing back and forth making huge hand gestures, Kitt came back over and nodded. “He’s in the hospital. They stabilized him. He got punched really hard and it made his heart skip a beat. He passed out and then things went crazy from there.”
I moved quickly to jump down off the stretcher and flinched. Kitt put out her hands and kept me on my feet. The medic hurried over. “YOU need to go and be seen.”
I nodded. “I will, I promise. But first I need to see Graham.”
Kitt shrugged. “No use in fighting with her. She’s pretty much pure stubborn. I’ll take her to the hospital to see him and then personally escort her down to the ER.”
The EMT stared at Kitt for a moment. “I don’t even know you but I guess that will have to do. Sign this release form.”
The scribbled my name on the page and Kitt put her arm undermine, helping me across the lawn and over to her car. Carefully I sat down inside and she buckled me in. Before she stood up, she looked me in the eyes. “You love him, don’t you? Despite it all?”
“Despite it all,” I said. “Forever.”
Kit groaned, rubbing the back of her neck. “Arms inside the vehicle. Let’s go get to him.”
I grinned and she shut the door, jumping in the driver’s seat. By the time we got to the hospital I needed a wheelchair, so Kitt nabbed one from the front and took me in the side, heading up to intensive care. When we rolled off, the nurses saw us, coming down to talk. “Visiting hours are over. You can come back tomorrow.”
I won’t lie, in that moment, I lost it. “Look lady. I’ve been drugged, dragged, beat up, threatened to be raped, and then left in the dark as to Graham’s condition. I want to see him now. He…he came back for me.”
Tears welled up again and the nurse sighed, glancing at the other. “Alright. Fine. Short though, and I’ll wheel you. Just one of you can go in.”
Kitt kissed me on the cheek and gave me the thumbs up as the nurse rolled me toward his room. “You wouldn’t happen to be Lindsey, would you?”
Surprised I looked up at her. “Yes.”
“He’s been saying your name ever since he was taken off support,” she replied. “We didn’t know who to call.”
Turning the corner into his room, the nurse slowed, finding him sitting up slightly, taking a slow sip of water. He looked over at me and blinked, his eyes lighting up. I put the brakes on the chair and used the table to stand up, shuffling over to his side. As soon as she took his hand, tears ran down both of their cheeks.
“Before you say anything,” I said. “I want you to know how much I still care about you. How much I still love you even.”
“Despite my background?” he asked.
“God yes,” I chuckled, holding my side. “Who cared where you are from. In fact, you coming from that background and becoming who you are, it’s even more amazing. You went from nothing to something and you beat all of the odds. That is amazing and inspirational to me. If people knew they would feel the same way. And if they didn’t… who cares.”
He reached up and touched my cheek. “You are the most beautiful woman in the world. I have never stopped, not even for a second, loving you. When I left that day, it had nothing to do with you or my feelings. I left because I had just found out I had a son.”
He turned his head, staring up at the ceiling. “I know I left without a goodbye. Without even as so much as a picture or a memory. I know that was wrong. I made a quick decision at the time and decided that my son was my entire life. That was, until that situation didn’t work out. But I should have thought about it. I should have realized how much you loved me and how much you would have been there for me and for Cyrus. I was scared.”
“I can see now that you left for him, and in doing so it separated us,” I said. “I have been angry for so long. God. You should have told me. But should have, would have, life is what it is. I want to be so angry with you. I want to scream at you, I really do. It makes no sense to me. But at the same time, I am just glad you are back here with me. You are making up for it.”
He gripped my hand tighter. “And if you let me, I will make up for it for the rest of your life. I can’t imagine for five seconds being away from you again. I was terrified you wouldn’t forgive me. That I would lose you all over. And I was terrified you would hate me for not being the well brought up guy.”
“Right now, I could punch you in a broken rib,” I said with a chuckle, wincing at the pain. “You either lost your mind when all of that happened, or you were not paying attention to who I was. Who I am. I couldn’t possibly feel okay with wasting any more time without you.”
Graham smiled big and we met in the middle with quite a bit of struggle. He kissed my lips and I smiled, struggling back up again. “We make one hell of a pair right now, don’t we?”
“I don’t think I could hurt anywhere else on my body,
” he groaned.
I lifted both eyebrows. “You know there’s always the option to bring Kit in. She never got her punch.”
Graham pouted. “Please don’t. Spare me and I will make sure to make it up to you tenfold.”
I sighed sarcastically. “I suppose I can let it go this time. I really would like you to have those all working properly anyway. I don’t want to wait for that to heal too.”
He grinned mischievously. “You know, if you slip down in here with me, I’m sure we could get it on old granny style.”
I laughed throwing my head back. “Oh, how romantic is that? Hold granny sex. How about no, but when you are back to walking straight again, I will climb on top and just make sure you have a really nice time.”
“Mmm,” he groaned. “That isn’t fair. You are teasing me.”
“I think I have a lot of teasing to do to equal you,” I replied. “Besides, it’s good for you. Make you really sit there and think about how bad you want it.”
He faked cried. “But I’ve been thinking about it forever.”
They both laughed and I reached down, taking his hand again. He pulled it to his lips and kissed it gently. “I love you Lindsey.”
I smiled, elated, barely able to keep my emotions inside. It had been far too long and far too much heartache. “I love you too, Graham.”
From the hallway they could hear Kitt, yelling back to him. “I’m still getting my nut punch!”
