The Girl on the Stairs Page 40

  9. For example, three corrections apparently in Miss Adams’ handwriting on page 75 of the latest version of her testimony do not appear on the same page that was reviewed by the HSCA. See HSCA 180-10095-10363 versus version two of Miss Adams’ testimony.

  10. Four of the twenty-three typewritten pages of the transcript of Miss Adams’ testimony contain references to Shelley and Lovelady. Three of those four pages have no notations made by Miss Adams. The fourth page shows a one-word correction near the middle of that page, with the reference to Shelley and Lovelady appearing near the bottom. Interesting as well is that on one of those four pages, immediately after he first mentions the names “Mr. Shelley and Mr. Lovelady,” David Belin refers to those two as “Truly and Lovelady.” His error remained uncorrected.

  11. Amy DeLong, archivist, National Archives and Records Administration, e-mail to author, September 20, 2012. Still not satisfied, I filed a Freedom of Information Act request with the Archives on November 1, 2012, seeking a list of the contents of Entry 39. When I received a reply a month later, I was told that the stenographic tapes in those sixteen boxes are arranged chronologically by the date the transcripts were taken (from January 21 through September 15, 1964) and not by the name of the person being deposed. Strangely, all of the stenographic tapes made on April 7, 1964—the date Miss Adams was questioned by David Belin—are missing from the collection. Gone as well are those of Billy Lovelady and William Shelley, who also were deposed on that date.

  12. Even the discovery of something as minor as the clipboard raises suspicions. Despite the Dallas Police and other investigative agencies scouring the sixth floor for evidence in the aftermath of the assassination, the clipboard Oswald used was not found until some ten days later. That’s surprising, since Frankie Kaiser, the employee credited with first spotting it, testified, “It was just laying there in the plain open.” (See 6H343.)
