The boys and Gavin hugged her, as she dabbed at her eyes with the hem of her swimsuit cover-up.
After the toast, the others joined together to play a game of beach volleyball, as Mr. and Mrs. Truman cheered them on. But Gavin and I soon found ourselves standing staring out over the surf, enjoying the breeze as it wafted in our faces. I held Gideon in my arms, and we watched the waves crash against the shore as Gavin wrapped his arm around my waist.
I silently gave thanks, remembering my mother’s love and my mysterious Uncle Michael’s generosity. And, of course, for the two homes Gavin and I owned, one in River Valley and the other here in my beloved Hawaii. Most of all, though, I was thankful for the love that my husband and I shared — a love I never knew existed before I met him.
Gavin looked down at me and smiled. “I love you, Crystal.”
“I love you too, Gavin.”
“Are you happy, sweetheart?”
“I’m living my dream.”
When I was least expecting it, I had found my happily ever after.
