“Sorry!” He nearly lost the rooster as he beat its wings and pecked at his ear. “I’m sorry! I was just trying to feed them!”
Cassi charged behind him, her chastisement more frightening than any alpaca.
“Spencer Townsend, you get back here right now!”
Within seconds, the chaos passed, save for one lone, terrifying pot-bellied pig who snorted around the tree, looking for snacks.
“Big mistake…” I backed away from the walking, snorting pile of ribs. “Go! Shoo! Get out of here before I hold a luau!”
Tidus helped me to my feet. “Don’t bother. The pig’s deaf.”
I blinked. “A deaf pig?”
He clapped his hands. The pig didn’t move.
“Deaf pig, blind rooster, three-legged goat,” he said.
“…Naked alpaca?”
“Alicia…has a condition.”
I shrugged. “Easier to barbeque her.”
“A beast that foul would probably poison you.”
He tried to settle in the hammock once more, but the twisted ropes spun out from under him. He crashed into the dirt, swore, and gave up, dodging a nuzzle from the pig.
I laughed, kneeling beside him. “I can’t believe you don’t think you belong on this farm.”
“Why?”
“Cause it’s the only place for a man like you.”
He met my gaze. “Any place with you is a place where I belong, Honey.”
The sweet-talker. “You saying you’d follow me to the ends of the earth?”
“I’ll always find you in that pitiful excuse of a truck.”
I smacked his shoulder. “Play your cards right, and you won’t have to follow the truck. You can stay right there with me.”
“Through thick and thin?”
“Yep.”
His grin turned sly. “In sickness and health? For richer or poorer?”
“From brisket to ribs, and pork to chicken. Face it, bad boy. There’s no escaping me.”
“I’ve run long enough…” Tidus smirked. “Hurt myself enough. Could use a sweet woman like you to show me what life is all about.”
“Could use a man like you to remind me that it’s about more than barbeque.”
“Not just an addiction anymore, are you?” he asked.
“Nope.” I winked. “I’m your perfect recipe for a good life.”
“You gonna love me forever, Honey Hudson?”
I sealed my promise with a kiss. “Just try to stop me, Tidus Payne.”
