Tanner, Caleb, Sara, and Emily Sounder entered the Stark Police Department. There was a uniformed officer behind the front desk. When she spotted the old woman, she sent her a bright smile.
“Hello, Mrs. Sounder, how are you today?”
“I’m fine, Lindsay.”
The officer took in Tanner, Caleb, and Sara, before addressing the old lady again.
“Can I help you with something, Mrs. Sounder?”
Before Emily Sounder could answer, two male officers came around a corner. One was in uniform and young. The other was dressed in jeans and a black long-sleeved shirt. His weapon was positioned on his left hip alongside a gold badge that identified him as the chief of police of Stark, Texas. Sitting atop his head was a black Stetson.
Tanner recognized him at once and wondered if the man would know him. If so, it would make what he came there to do go much easier.
The chief had been engaged in conversation with the younger man but paused to take in the visitors to his station. After sending Mrs. Sounder a warm smile, his eyes admired Sara. Moving on, he took in Caleb, then, Tanner.
Police Chief Steven Mendez stared at Tanner. Took a step closer, while locking eyes, then took a step back, as his mouth dropped open in shock. After shaking himself, he held up a hand and spoke.
“I apologize for staring at you, pardner, but I’ll be damned if you don’t remind me of someone, someone I knew a long time ago, a good friend.”
Tanner walked closer to the chief and offered his hand, when Mendez gripped it, Tanner spoke.
“It’s me, Steve. I’m back.”
Mendez released his hand and looked him over again. “Back? No, you can’t be… you, you died.”
Sara and Caleb came up to stand on either side of Tanner. As he smiled at Steve Mendez, Tanner took Sara’s hand while with his other hand he gripped Caleb’s shoulder.
“I’m alive, I’m Cody Parker, and I’m back.”
