“I love you, too, Declan,” she whispered, smiling.

  Five Years Later

  Boston

“All set?” Declan asked, holding their two-year-old son, Jamie. The child was playing with Declan’s ear.

  “I think so,” Grace said.

“What are you looking for?” he asked.

“The passports,” she said, her brow furrowed, digging through her purse.

“Ah, the black hole.” Declan laughed. “Do you think you’ll find them before our plane takes off?”

“Here they are!” She pulled them out, triumphant.

“Are you all right leaving?” he asked, concerned. They’d come for a month to visit her family. He always worried about her being so far away from them. Luckily, her family liked to travel, and they visited Ireland regularly.

But they had to get back. Their dog, Sammy, was being minded by his gran. And they had jobs to get back to. Declan was working construction, Grace worked as an assistant curator for a museum, and once a month, Declan did a “Real Ireland” tour for Paul that was steadily growing in popularity.

Grace regarded him, her features softening. She slid her arm around his waist. “I am, Dec. We had a great visit. But you know what? I just want to go home. Our home.”

He leaned into her and kissed her forehead. Jamie got caught up in the midst of it and squealed in delight.
