“Kalilah.” Nick warned. “My heartrate just returned to normal.”
Kalilah rolled her eyes. “Not what I meant, Nick.” She said between chuckles. “Besides, you do have plans tonight. My house 8 PM. Take-out and movie night. Dress comfortably. Later, Nick.”
She put her phone back on the charger and headed towards the shower. She was certain they wouldn’t have sex that night, but she could at least get some contact. Kalilah looked forward to finding out what kind of kisser he was. She whistled while she took her shower.
Chapter 7
K alilah was dressed and ready at exactly 10 AM. She’d opted for a mix of style and comfort since she had to car shop today. She chose a navy romper short set and some silver strappy sandals with silver accessories. She applied even less make up than she wore for work and put her hair in a top bun. Kalilah put in her dangly, silver earrings and studied herself in the mirror.
She let out a long sigh. Irrationally, she hated car shopping although she’d never had to do it. Furthermore, she wouldn’t have a reason to be up under Nick in the mornings. Of course, she wanted her freedom back. She’d caught herself preparing to go somewhere many times throughout the week before she remembered her car was gone.
Kalilah’s stomach growled, and she patted it. Her sister honked, and she was happy she didn’t have to wait too long. The time gods were on Kalilah’s side because they were seated at the brunch buffet in less than an hour. Kalilah tore into her omelet and moaned.
“This is sooooo good!”
Cayla Wright never missed a beat; her hazel eyes were currently trying to see into Kalilah’s soul. Cayla’s looks were closer to their dad’s Creole Cajun side. Her skin was fairer like Paula Patton, while Kalilah was warmer brown like Kerry Washington, but their skin and eye color are where their differences ended.
Kalilah’s little sister always stayed with the current fashions and never left the house looking anything less than flawless. They shared similar heights, shoe sizes, and shapes which made borrowing all the designer stuff Kalilah was too frugal to buy a breeze. Cayla’s life motto was “Treat yourself”, and that is exactly what she did every chance she got.
“Things are that good with the white boy, huh?”
Kalilah rolled her eyes and sipped her Bellini.
“Girl. His name is Nick. What makes you think anything changed?”
It was Cayla’s turn to roll her eyes. “Well, let’s review. First, he was a guy you’ve been wondering about. Then, he was the world’s biggest asshole. The very next day, he’s giving you a ride to work. Then, he’d apologized, so he was okay. Now, you’re all smiles and closed mouth.” Cayla leaned in. “Dish, girl. How was it? You slut. Was it worth all of the drama?”
Kalilah help up both hands in surrender. “Calm down. We haven’t had sex.”
Cayla looked skeptical. “So, you two haven’t done anything? You don’t just cancel happy hour for no reason. I’m not buying it. Spill, or I’m leaving you here.”
Kalilah gave in. “I spoke to him this morning.”
“And?” Cayla was always impatient
Kalilah blushed and told her about her morning call. “He is coming over tonight, but I doubt we’ll have sex.”
Cayla leaned in like a reporter getting a big scoop. “Why not? Are you on your period? How is it possible to have phone sex, very high school by the way, and not have plans to close the deal tonight?” Cayla held up her hand like she’d just remembered something. “Hold that thought. What happened at dinner last night? I’m missing something. What are you leaving out?”
Kalilah knew the look in Cayla’s eyes. She wasn’t going to let it go with a vague statement; she wanted all the tea. Kalilah conceded.
“Dang. Can a girl have secrets?” Cayla gave her a look that said “nope” and she acquiesced. “Fine. I’ll tell you in the car.” Cayla beamed triumphantly and waved for the check.
They’d barely closed the doors on Cayla’s silver Audi before she started her inquisition. “Okay. Out with it. Why all the secrecy?”
Kalilah sighed. “Are you going to at least start driving?”
Cayla shook her head, her long hair spilling over her shoulders with each shake. “We’re not moving until you share. I feel I need all my focus for this conversation. Begin.”
“Don’t interrupt until the end.” Kalilah warned. “Okay, so you know about everything except one detail. Last night’s dinner won’t make any sense without it.”
Cayla made the “hurry up and tell me” hand gesture. Kalilah filled her in on the phone conversation she’d accidently heard in Nick’s SUV.
Now Cayla was the one whose eyebrows almost touched her hairline. “A fucking virgin! Are you kidding me? At twenty-nine? No promises to God? Just bad timing and luck? The poor guy belongs in a museum.” Cayla put her hand on her chest. “I’m glad I wasn’t driving! I would have killed us both. Okay, so what happened at dinner?” Cayla asked, back to business.
Kalilah played with the hem of her shorts.
“He asked me to dinner because he wanted to discuss his virginity. I had no idea what he wanted to talk about. I figured he was gonna give me all the dirty details about how he’d made it this far.” Kalilah looked at Cayla. “Instead, he tells me he’s ready to lose it. Then, he asked me to take it.”
Cayla flushed and waved herself. “Again. I’m happy I’m not driving right now. That’s almost hotter than an experienced guy telling you all the dirty things he’s gonna do to you. You will be forever in his memory even if you two aren’t a couple in the end.” That thought made Kalilah a little sad. She’d gotten used to having Nick around.
“I know. I was struck stupid for a minute. That was the last thing I expected him to say.”
Cayla nodded in understanding. “Based off this morning’s phone sex, which totally makes sense now, I take it you said yes.”
Kalilah nodded slowly. “My initial thought was to turn him down, but I am attracted to him, if I’m being honest with myself.”
Cayla rolled her eyes and started the car. “It’s about time,” she said as she started driving. “You’ve been talking about him on and off for years. Are you ready for this? On birth control? Everything waxed and smooth?”
“I get the shot remember.” Kalilah laughed. “And wasn’t I the one that started taking you to get waxed?”
Cayla shrugged. “You could be out of practice. It’s been a year since ass face. I’m glad he’s gone though. I couldn’t stand that dude.” It didn’t take long to get to the dealership. They were sitting at the light in front of the dealership. Cayla glanced at Kalilah. “You said he’s coming at eight?” Kalilah nodded. “Okay. I’ll be there at 7:45.” She held up her hand to stop Kalilah’s protest. “I vowed to meet any guy that chose to be up in your face before you get serious. I will be able to give an accurate sketch to the police if need be.”
Kalilah sighed and rolled her eyes, “That’s dramatic.”
Cayla looked at Kalilah in all seriousness. “I am meeting him today, even if that means attaching myself to your hip from now until he comes over.”
Kalilah got out the car, closed the door, and leaned down to talk to her in the open window. “Are you aware that I’m the big sister?”
Cayla smiled and gave her a finger wave. “I’ll see BOTH of you tonight.” She blew a kiss and drove away. Kalilah watched as she sped down the street and cut someone off.
“What am I going to do with her?”
“She said yes last night and treated you to phone sex this morning. Now, you’re scheduled to be at her house in an hour?” Dex asked through Nick’s speaker phone.
“Yes.” He said as he towel-dried his hair.
Dex gave out a low whistle. “Damn. She doesn’t waste time. I like this girl more and more every day. Are we prepared, big bro? Condoms? Shower? Fresh clothes? Fresh breath? How’s the manscaping?”
Nick knew he was inexperienced, but his brother gave him no credit. “Yes, to all, AND those are a g
iven. I’m not growing a forest, if that’s what you’re asking. I remain trimmed and cut low since you are in my business. “
Dex scoffed, “That will do. Make sure to check her status down there. If she’s smooth, you should be, too.
Nick’s nerves were back in all of their glory. A brigade of butterflies marched in his belly. “I don’t think tonight’s the night, Dex. I think this is either just a hangout or a way for her to get to know me better. “
“Better safe than sorry. I gotta go, bro. Good luck tonight.” In usual Dex fashion, the line went dead almost immediately.
Nick was nervous. Each tick of the clock filled him with anticipation and fear. What if she was ready tonight and he wasn’t? Would she back out? Would she turn into Meg and question his manliness? She’s not like that. His instinct argued with his flawed logic and left him feeling unsure. Nick considered, cancelling but she would see right through any lie he could construct. He squared his shoulders and pulled on a soft t-shirt and his favorite pair of well-worn jeans that he never wore to work because of some fraying in certain places. He looked in the mirror and wondered if he was too casual or not casual enough. He sighed and grabbed the gym bag that he never used and put two extra outfits inside just in case.
He took a few deep breaths and started to relax. His mind went back to their morning phone call; his cock twitched. Kalilah was dangerous. She’d made him hotter on the phone than Meg ever had in person. He shook his head; that was the last Meg thought. He wasn’t going to compare them because Kalilah was in a different league. She’d sounded so sexy when she came – he wanted to see her aroused and coming for him. That thought heated his blood and carried him to her house.
He parked in front of her house and sat outside assessing the possible situation. He saw a silver Audi on the right-side driveway but knew Kalilah’s objections well enough to know that she would not have purchased one. Plus, it already had its permanent plates. Nick got out of his Escalade and his eye slid to the vehicle on the left side of the driveway. His face broke out in a huge smile as he checked out the black Cadillac SRX SUV with paper plates. She did want to be twins. And she went the pre-owned route. Smart girl.
He rang the doorbell but was still checking out Kalilah’s new ride. “Well. You must be Nick.” An unfamiliar voice said almost accusingly. Nick turned, and his eyes collided with a younger, lighter version of Kalilah. She was beautiful and appeared to be way more high maintenance. Not necessarily a bad thing. Just different. He hoped his smile was charming and he extended a hand.
“Yes. I’m Nick. And you must be Kalilah’s sister…”
“Cayla,” she supplied. “Cayla with a ‘C’.” She took his offered hand, but instead of shaking it, she used it to pull him into the house. “Take off your shoes. Kalilah is in the shower, but I’m glad you’re early. It gives me time to find out what you’re really after.”
“Huh?” Nick tried to keep up with the conversation but didn’t understand her suspicion. “Sorry, I’m not following.”
She pulled him further in the light and walked around him assessing him like he was a statue in the museum. “You have potential.” She said matter of fact. “What are your intentions with my sister?” Nick felt like she looked through him to his innermost secrets. Her intensity made him nervous. “You are not trying to use up all of her goodness then leave her? Answer me, man.”
“I…uh, am a virgin?” He mentally slapped himself. Why in the hell did he just say that? Why did he say it like it was a question? She should work for the government. “Um…I’m not here to hurt her.” Man, this woman was scary.
She narrowed her eyes at him. “Do you plan on remaining a virgin? I think not. Just know, if you plan on using my sister. You will have to deal with me.” She punctuated every word with a finger poke to his chest. “I will hunt you……”
“Cayla!” Kalilah chided. Leave the poor man alone. Hi Nick. Are you okay? Little Miss Spanish Inquisition over here can be a little intense. I should have warned you.”
Nick’s mouth went dry. Kalilah was wearing a spaghetti strap camisole and some thin pajama shorts that stopped mid-thigh. He could tell she wasn’t wearing a bra, and her hellion of a little sister almost disappeared. Almost.
“Kalilah. Put some more clothes on.” The little drill sergeant barked. “You’ll give him ideas of what to do with his virginity.” Kalilah raised her eyebrows at them. “What? He told me within three seconds of being here.” They shared a look, and something unspoken passed between. The secret language of sisters. Cayla nodded. “Okay. I’m out.”
Nick watched her walk away in her tight soft pink tube dress. Her stilettos carrying her shapely legs to the door. Yup. She was Kalilah’s sister. Cayla abruptly turned and pointed at Nick then to her eyes and then back to him. Giving him the universal signal that she was watching him. With that, she was gone.
Kalilah was watching him. Damn, she caught him checking out her sister.
“She looks like you but way more intense.” She shrugged and continued to look at him. “Okay,” he admitted and looked at his feet. “I checked her out. Your parents make beautiful daughters. You may not believe me, but I was wondering if she would let you borrow that dress.”
Kalilah smirked. “Dig that hole deeper Nick. At least you didn’t say something stupid. It’s progress. I get it.” She shrugged. “I’ve checked out your dad a few times.” Kalilah laughed when Nick frowned. “It’s true. I can’t deny it. Those Sinclair genes are awesome.”
Nick shrugged, wondering if she noticed the same genes in him. “Wait until you meet Dex.” Nick felt the need to change the subject. He didn’t want to think about Kalilah checking out anyone else. “I saw your new ride. You did want to be twins.” His big smile was back.
Kalilah pulled him to the couch to sit down. The light pressure of her hand on his made his pulse race.
“Yeah. Since you were being stingy with your keys, I had to get my own.” She smiled at him. “And we are not twins. I have a different model.”
Nick shook his head. “You have a black Cadillac SUV. That’s all that matters. The rest are just details.” His and her SUVs. He wasn’t going to tell her that. It was a dangerous line of thinking that meant long term commitment. “What’s for dinner?” He asked, patting his belly.
Kalilah shrugged. “We have a few options. I didn’t have time to cook. Chinese, pizza, sandwiches, or we can order to-go from a local restaurant. It’s up to you. I’m easy.” Nick wiggled his eyebrows at her and was rewarded with an arm punch. “Shut up. You know what I meant.”
“Well, Chinese sounds good. But pizza or sandwiches are easier to eat without a plate or table. How much effort you feel like exerting to eat?”
Kalilah picked up a menu. “Chinese it is. Let’s order a lot because we will get hungry again.” Nick tensed. That could have two meanings. “You know what they say: you eat Chinese food, you’ll be hungry in an hour.”
He relaxed a little. He didn’t know why he was so tense. He wanted to lose his virginity, and Kalilah made him hornier than any other woman he’d ever met. Her sister included. He couldn’t quite place his apprehension.
“I want something spicy. General Tso’s chicken?” He nodded. “And Mongolian beef?” Another nod. “Shrimp fried rice, egg rolls, crab puffs?”
Nick nodded. “Yes, to all; we need something kind of sweet, too. I know General Tso’s is kinda sweet, but if were gonna ask for extra spice, it won’t count. We have chicken, beef, and shrimp. How about sweet and sour pork? Or the ribs.” Kalilah scrunched up her nose. He loved when she did that.
“Sweet and sour. Ribs get stuck in your teeth.”
They ordered food and argued about who was paying. Nick eventually won. She did just buy a vehicle and such. He paid for the food while she was in the kitchen getting plates and drinks. He walked in behind her as she was bent over looking in the refrigerator. Her wonderful ass was sticking out. Her thin shorts announced her lack of underwear. He could not find a panty
line to save his life. She must have been talking because she looked over her shoulder expectantly.
“I’m sorry. What?”
Kalilah shook her head and gave him a knowing look. She stood then turned to him. “What do you want to drink? I have wine, beer, wine coolers, hard liquor, juice, soda, and water.”
“Wow, you have quite a selection.”
She shrugged before responding, “I try to be a good hostess. So, tell me Nick. What do you want?”
His eyes went to her lips and slid down to her nipples. His body was starting to respond. Nick’s gaze roamed over her entire body slowly. He was glad he came. He was dying to touch her.
“To drink, Nick.”
“Whatever you’re drinking is fine.” She shrugged again and grabbed the wine.
“I usually don’t drink wine, but I like this one.” She poured each of them a glass and sat across from him at the table.
They ate in silence. Each of them lost in their own thoughts. She put the food in the fridge while he put the plates in the sink. They sat on the couch with their wine glasses.
“What do you want to watch?” she asked as she turned on the TV.
Nick shrugged. “It doesn’t matter. Is there a chick flick that you want to watch or something?”
“First, that’s stereotypical, Nick. In fact, most guys complain about chick flicks and end up laughing harder than the girl. Second, I was thinking more of the new Jason Statham movie. It’s always fun to see someone get kicked in the face.”
Raised an eyebrow. “That’s unexpected. OK. Let’s watch it.”
Kalilah handed him the DVD. “Put it in.” Before he could speak, she held up a hand. “Put the DVD in the Blu-Ray player. I’m going to get snacks and a blanket after I pee.”
“Speaking of which, where’s the bathroom?” She pointed to the hall on his left and went in the opposite direction.
Nick emptied his bladder and washed his hands. He knew that this was his moment to at least get a kiss. He would just have to figure out the right time. He used the soap to wash his face; he didn’t like smelling like food. He rinsed his mouth and took some mints out of his pocket and popped them in his mouth. He put his glasses back on and came back to find Kalilah cuddled up on the couch waiting for him.
