fingers. It was then I realized I had said the wrong spell. I started chanting the other spell and I could tell it worked. The creature slowly walked away from me. I noticed the straps had not been tied, so I got off the table.

I walked over to Matt and tried to get him down. I couldn’t reach the knots in the rope. I found a ladder and climbed it. The rope came untied and Matt fell to the floor. I climbed down the ladder and picked up my brother.

“Come on, Matt. We have to get out of here.” He didn’t answer me because I could tell he was still in a trance. I dragged Matt down the hall to the spell room. I needed to look at that book again.

I read from the spell book on how to get Matt out of the trance.

“No wonder you’re still in a trance, Matt. You have to be in daylight while I say this chant.”

I looked around in search of a way out of the basement. The only way was to climb those steep steps. I tried to carry Matt up the steps but he was too heavy. When we were near the top of the steps, the door swung open. I looked up and there stood that creature. It made angry noises at us. It scared me so bad, Matt and I rolled back down the steps. I dragged Matt with me while I tried to run away from the monster. When we stopped, I noticed we had found our way back into the spell room. I leaned Matt against the wall. I took another look around the room. I found another door that I had not noticed before. I grabbed Matt and pushed on the door.

I’m scared to death because I didn’t know what was in the dark room. I had to get Matt out of that trance, though. Of course, the only way was to get him outside in daylight.

I carried a candle and helped Matt walk through the room. We walked and walked. There in the distance was a light. We walked faster toward it and hoped it was the way out. As we approached the light, we discovered that it was a way to the outdoors.

Before we could escape, we heard a noise behind us. It was that animal creature after us again. I remembered the spell from the book and chanted it. Matt seemed to come out of the trance a bit. I realized my mistake when I saw Matt become a little bit more alert. I had said the wrong chant. I chanted the other spell and I heard the creature whine and whimper, like a baby. It went to sleep.

“What is going on?” asked Matt.

“I’ll explain everything after we get out of here.” I pushed open the door to outside and jumped. We landed on the grass without injury. In the distance, I could see the beginning of the sunrise. I chanted the right spell this time and Matt returned to normal.

“You got caught by some kind of animal creature a couple of times. A spider thing talked to me and told me where to find the spell room.”

“Sure, a spider thing talked to you. I don’t believe you.”

“I’m telling you the truth. We had found a room with all kinds of bones and skeletons lying all over the room. I’m thinking that the old farmer and his wife experimented with the animals they had on their farm.

“Well, I want to go back in there and have a look for myself. I want you to show me the spell room and the talking spider. I want to see the creature that captured me.”

“Fine, I’ll prove it to you.” I said. “Let’s go!”

It was daylight by now and the boys headed back into the house. We found the basement door and walked down the steps.

“There were candles lit down here last night. Now they are gone!” I tried the light switch and it worked.

“This light didn’t work before! Something creepy is going on here,” I said.

I opened up a door that was in the room. It was empty. There was nothing in there but dust, dirt and spider webs. A lone spider looked at me. Matt and I walked through the room to another door. This room is completely empty except for a single bone on the floor. After we examined it, we discovered it was a pig’s bone. I noticed something else lying on the floor. I picked it up to show Matt.

“Here’s some sheep’s wool. I’m telling you the truth, Matt. This room is where all those bones and skeletons were. I don’t know where all of it went but it was here.”

“I don’t believe you, Mark. Your imagination is working overtime.”

“Matt, you were in a trance. When you saw a glow from a red candle, you stood there and looked at it. I don’t know why you don’t believe me.”

“Okay, Mark. Let me understand what you’re telling me. The old farmer and his wife somehow were able to put two different animals together. You’re telling me that one of the creatures overtook the old couple and killed them off. That would explain the skeletons you saw. Where is this spell book you were talking about?”

“Let’s go down the hall and I’ll show you, Matt.”

We ran down the hall to the room where I thought the spell book would be. As we entered the room, all we saw was dust. The pedestal where the book was on was gone.

“I don’t believe this! This book is gone, too!”

“So, now you’re telling me the farmer was a witch of some kind? C’mon, Mark, now you’re being silly.”

“Can we just go home, please?” I asked.

  “Sure. Let’s go.”

As we left the house, a voice said, “Run! Run as far as you can, little boys. Don’t come back here again!”
