“Well, it seems we have all caught our spies,” Charlotte said.
“It took some of us longer than others,” Emily, Hugh’s wife said, nodding at her sister-in-law, Kate, who smiled in agreement.
“No matter, it was worth the wait,” Kate answered, holding her infant son in her arms.
“Colette, you, Louis, and the children are always welcome here. You are part of our family now.” Charlotte placed her arm through Colette’s.
She had a special bond with all the ladies. They had all been through trials with their husbands and, in the end, had all triumphed and found happiness.
“That’s right. We’re all sisters.” Emily squeezed her other hand.
The kindness shown by everyone was more than Colette could have ever hoped for. As the women continued to chat, she spotted a glint in Louis’s eyes that could only be described as lustful. The man never tired of their lovemaking. He crossed the room and took her in his arms. In front of the entire room, he kissed her, long and passionately.
“Are you happy, my darling?” he asked.
“How could I not be? I have you, the children, and our friends. There is nothing more in the world that I could want.” She beamed with happiness. Unable to contain herself, she leaned up for another kiss. Colette was ready to face a bright future, with her husband and children. The days of fear and thievery were behind her. A new life with the man she loved lay ahead, and together, they could conquer anything.
