“Then they’ll be after you in defended space,” I said. “Look around this ship. Do you see any Coalition vessels?”
“No, which is how I like it,” Curtis said. “Coalition vessels are just gonna gun us down.”
“Not if there’s xenos to distract them,” Tomlins said. “Come on. You know the Coalition forces are a little more professional than these backwater prison guards.”
“And we have to get out of here,” Leka said, striding across the room to the doorway. “Now!”
Garcia watched me as Leka and Curtis hurried off to the ship’s command center. I couldn’t feel the presence of the xeno ships yet, which I took as a comfort.
“Well, you bought us time,” Garcia said. “You didn’t have to do that, I guess.”
“I mean, I had to save my own skin,” I said. “Come on. You don’t honestly think I’m with the fucking xenos…”
“I don’t think you’re with them,” Garcia said. “I’m just afraid they might come with you.”
“Only one way to find out,” I said.
“Nah.” Garcia laughed and shook his head. “There’s a few ways. But you’ve been saving our asses so far, and you might pull it off again.” He shrugged and turned around. “Don’t prove me wrong, man.”
I sighed and walked back to the portal, to stare at the dying world we were about to escape for good. I prayed that Simms and the others would forgive us for what we were about to do. I prayed that I’d be worthy of my new crewmates’ trust.
And I prayed that I was really one step closer to seeing my girls again. Even after everything I’d gone through, I felt like that was the only prayer out of all of them that I really meant.
