"Pamela syringes please." Ian said in a monotone voice. She handed him the vaccine, ready and loaded. Kevin pleaded to go first, making it easier for Linda. Ian's hands shook as the needle penetrated the skin. He pressed down on the plunger. "Thank you Kevin for your service." He said and he meant it.
Kevin was shown to a cot located in the back of the containment room. It was Linda's turn. She almost passed out after the needle was injected. Ian figured it was from the sheer terror of it all. Hell, he almost passed out giving the injections. She too was shown to a cot and the two of them laid there. Ian and Pamela sat with them in their lab suits to monitor them. Normally, in the world long past, a vaccine would have never been injected into a rat, let alone a human this rapidly. Times were different now, the official reminded Ian. Hopefully this would work. The world was banking on it.
As Ian sat in the cool, quiet room his thoughts wondered to the woman. What was she doing now? How come she was still functioning on some level? If this vaccine worked he would have to find out. He would ask the head official for permission to bring her to this very room. First things first though.
NOT DEAD YET:
Blake sat in the parking lot, eating small bits of grass. Chewing was almost impossible. "CHEW, CHEW, CHEW!" She went in and out of consciousness without even knowing it. The odd thing was that Blake still felt her soul rise within her chest and her gut knot. It wasn't her time. She could beat this. A man stared at her from something, maybe a window. When was that though? She mouthed the words HELP, but she didn't think anything actually came out.
ONE DEAD, ONE ALIVE:
Linda expired late in the evening. Ian rested his head on his forearm. It seemed as though her old age had gotten the best of her and the vaccine was to strong. Kevin however, was faring wonderfully. Ian checked and rechecked his progress. This went on for a week. With further testing it was conclusive, they had a vaccine. The old and the weak may not survive it but they now had hope. Word spread fast among Zone 5. Pamela prepared the vaccine for use. Volunteers arrived daily and after a few weeks of minimal death, it was time to introduce a vaccinated living to the blood. Ben who was a quiet young man with glasses and an overbite was the first to volunteer. Sitting in the isolation room, blood of the Dad Plague was introduced to his system. This was risky stuff Ian was doing and he knew it. It did work and Zone 5 felt a freedom they hadn't felt for quite some time.
Months after the discovery of the vaccine, the people of zone 5 were not allowed outside of the gates but life was a bit more normal. Many Zombies had died off, their bodies burned by those who were allowed outside the gates. Life was becoming a bit more normal. They couldn't save the already infected but others now had a chance. Ian was proud of himself. He had worked so hard, as had others. Some of their research had helped draw him to his findings. He had been very busy getting the information to the surrounding zones. The functional walker had been forgotten.
WTF:
Ian closed the large front door behind him. It was the first time he had been outside the gates of Zone 5. Walking the grounds, he saw only a few infected, nearly starved, but one.
"Is that the one I seen so many months ago?" he actually said out-loud to himself. She was not starved to death. She seemed to have much better muscle control. Her eyes seemed bright almost. Blake's head snapped up, her eyes staring directly into Ian's. He almost ran the other way, but froze in place. He had never expected this. Then the zombie actually spoke the word “HELP”.
“What the fuck?” Ian said, and then passed out.
Is there a cure for the virus? Is it possible there are some folks with immunity to it? Or does Blake just have a unique will to live? Or is something bigger on the horizon? Look for part two in May of 2012.
