“Your senses are very heightened,” Brax said. “I’m impressed.”
“But how did you come to have angel blood?” she said.
Brax smiled. “I had a surprise visit while I was in hell; a visit from an angel.” He looked lovingly at Lux. “For a moment I thought it was you. It looked so much like you, and I so desperately wanted it to be you. But I knew you’d died. You died, Lux. I saw you.”
“Yes. I guess I got a surprise visit from an angel, too.”
He chuckled. “I’m not surprised.”
“So,” Asher said. “If it wasn’t Lux who visited you, who did?”
“I don’t know who she is, but she looked just like Lux. Oh, maybe a few years older. An older sister, maybe.”
Everyone looked to Lux who shook her head. “I’m an only child.”
“Well, whoever she was, she gave me some of her blood. It didn’t take much and soon I could feel it going through me, going through my veins until I started glowing. I had to get out of hell. I followed that angel out and ended up back here.”
“But, Brax,” Lux said. “Why didn’t you come to me? Why didn’t you let me know where you were? How you were?”
“I tried,” Brax said. “Even though I’d seen you die, I went out looking for you anyway. I came back to San Francisco. I even went to your house.”
“To my parents’ house?”
“Yeah. Don’t worry. I didn’t go in and disturb them or anything. I just hung around waiting to see if you’d come home, but you never did. I checked out the school and found out you hadn’t been there for a while.” He looked up at her, his eyes glistening. “I saw your obituary. I even saw your tombstone.”
“I don’t get it,” Romeo said. “Who is this angel who gave you some of her blood?”
“Other than telling you that she looked like Lux, I don’t know what to tell you. She came down there, she found me, and she offered me her blood. I told her that I had my own angel, that I had Lux, and I wanted to wait for her.”
“So why did you go along with her?” Romeo said.
“She said she needed me. She needed me to do my job. She told me I had to come back here and be the gatekeeper. At first I didn’t really know what she was talking about, but it turns out that she wanted me to tend to the portals I was already familiar with. My Uncle Kingsley’s charges.”
“But what made those portals so special that she would give you her blood to ensure you came back here?” Lux asked.
Epilogue
The door to the room slowly opened and a beautiful woman stood there looking at them all. Wearing a black leather skirt and a tight black knit sweater, she was strikingly stylish. Her straight dark hair fell to her shoulders, and her four inch pumps clip clopped lightly on the hardwood floor as she entered the room.
“There she is,” Brax said. “That’s my angel.”
“Are you sure you don’t have a sister?” Lucas said. “Cause she looks just like you, Lux.”
Lux looked at the woman. “I’ve seen you before,” she said, searching her memory.
“Probably the last time you looked in the mirror,” Sully said.
Walking up to her, Lux looked more closely at the woman. “I saw you… in Vegas.” Her eyes widened as the memory came in more clearly. “You were at the fight. I’d been told that you were in a coma, but you were there. I saw you.”
“So, is she your long lost sister?” Sully asked.
“You have a very charming group of boys surrounding you, dear,” the older woman said. “A very flattering bunch.”
“She’s not my sister,” Lux said. “She’s my mother.”
All the guys gasped.
“No kidding?” Romeo said.
“Damn,” Sully groaned.
“Double damn,” Lucas said.
“Put your tongues back in your mouths, guys. This is my mother we’re talking about. Show a little respect.”
“Sure thing,” Lucas said.
“This is a woman who ended up in a coma after fighting one of the biggest demons there is,” Lux went on.
Brax nodded his agreement. “Obsidian. He’s this huge demon who turned my parents into succubi.”
“Obsidian also killed you, my dear child.” The older woman reached out to pet her daughter’s hair. “That lousy creature ripped your throat out. That lousy creature came through a portal at your high school, no less, and he tore my baby to pieces.”
“I’m okay now, Mom. An angel came to me.” She looked at the woman with open admiration. “And you’re better, too.”
“He may have put me down for a while, but I’m back and I’m stronger than ever. I’m also ready to fight.”
“Fight?” Lucas said. “Are you anticipating something?”
“I’ll say,” the woman said. “Obsidian is still out there. He hasn’t been destroyed. He’s a wickedly sly thing who keeps slipping away unharmed. That has to end. His life has to end.” She looked at them all, her smile disappearing. “He was already strong and virtually indestructible as it was, but now he has joined forces with many others, others who are just as big, just as strong and just as determined to bring the human race down.”
“Mom,” Lux said. “What are you saying?”
“I’m saying that they want to go after institutions like the Shadowlight Hunters Acadamy, and any other slayer stronghold. I’m saying that we’ve been hearing more and more about various portals all around the world, portals that have been securely sealed for decades, that are now cracked. And they’re leaking. They’re leaking demons. It’s only a matter of time before they blow wide open.”
“From all around the world?” Sully asked in disbelief.
“Florence, Nice, Budapest, Sidney, just to name a few major cities,” she said. “Then we have several cracks in Uruguay, Nigeria and even Siberia.”
“What about here?” Lux said. “In the United States?”
“Just about every city you can name,” she said. “From Mobile to Chicago. From Fort Myers to Seattle. It’s the same story everywhere. Whether you’re looking at a metropolis or a small desert town, or a coastal village; cracks are creeping up, and they’re widening fast.
“Para bellum,” Romeo said.
“Yes,” Lux said. “Prepare for war.”
