“Good, that will keep him out of trouble for a little while.”

“At least until I get back.”

“This isn’t dangerous, is it?” Karen asked, and she looked into Barry’s eyes, searching for any hint of a lie.

“No, I just have to do some errand for the Senator then I will be right back, and we can finish our vacation.”

“You promise?” Karen said as she poked out her bottom lip.

“I promise, now be sure to have my puddy cat nice and wet for me when I get back.”

“I will, and you know what?”

  “What?”

“Your puddy cat is nice and wet now, and you have enough time to make it wetter if you want to that is,” Karen said, while a devilish smile started to appear on her face, which made her look even sexier than she was.

He looked at his phone, and he had about fourteen minutes to deal with Karen and make it downstairs to the waiting car. Twelve minutes later, he was running from his room as Karen kissed him while she hid behind the door naked. He made it out of the hotel lobby and to the entrance at six o’clock on the dot as a guy in a black suit stood next to a black sedan and opened the door, motioning for Barry to get in the car.

While Barry was getting ready to take his flight to America, someone was getting ready to go on a journey, but this journey would be a one-way ticket and no possibility of return.

  Chapter 19

  Out of Time

Dave was grabbing a few important things he wanted to give to Becky and little Kat himself. He thought he was ready to go and he knew his time was running out, the cancer was making sure of that, but now that he had gotten the call for his last mission, all he could think of was having more time to live life. He grabbed the few items that he could and put them into a neatly packed suitcase, so the items wouldn’t get damaged if he had to depend on someone else to take the suitcase to Becky, which he knew he would. He was hoping that he could see Becky and little Kat one last time. Dave knew there was no backing out or the Senator would have them both killed, and he would probably have to watch them die. Backing out of this deal would be the second stupidest thing he would have ever done. The first thing would be getting involved with the Senator. He looked around his house for the last time as he saw a sedan pull up in front of his house and park by the curb. Dave was glad he took the last look at his house. He saw a picture on the wall that he almost forgot about taking. The picture was of him and Becky at the beach. He remembered the day like it was just hours ago; he even remembered the stranger he asked to take the picture was wearing a blue shirt, shades, and a straw hat. He kept the picture there and looked at it every day and especially before he went on missions for the Senator. He was never sure if he would make it back or not. While he thought about this being his last time at home, he thought of the many people he had put in that same position. They weren’t sure of what was going to happen to them until he arrived. He had time to plan and even say goodbye and make some gesture at being sorry, but the people he had killed had no chance to rectify their mistakes or even say goodbye to their loved ones. He never was a man of God, but at this moment, he asked God to please forgive him and understand what he had to do in his last days and what he had done in his past. He hadn’t realized he was so deep in thought when the knocking on the door brought him back to reality.

“Just a minute, I’m coming,” Dave said, he walked over to the picture on the wall, took it off and put it inside the suitcase, then he walked over to the front door and opened it, looked at the two guys in suits and dark glasses at his door, with their gold Federal badges showing.

“You ready to go?” Agent Harold said while he and Agent Marone looked around the house when they walked in trying to figure out what took the old guy so long to answer the door.

“Yeah, I’m ready, grab my bag and be easy with it,” Dave said as Agent Harold looked at Agent Marone to get the bag and Dave stood at the front door with the key in his hand, ready to lock his house up for the final time. Dave closed the door while the two Agents walked by him and then he opened it and looked inside one more time before he closed and locked the door, one final time. Dave walked by the two Agents while they stood there looking at Dave and he walked past them to the sedan and opened the door, stopping to speak to them, before he got in the car.

“Come on Heckle and Jeckle, we got places to go and people to see,” Dave laughed inside because he knew how pissed off these guys must be, but what were they going to do, kill him? He found amusement in his predicament, as dire as it was.

“So, where is it you’re in such a rush to get to?” Agent Marone said, and he opened the rear driver side door and put Dave’s bag down gently while Dave watched him.

“I’m going to say goodbye, I’m sure you fellas know this is a one-way trip for me,” Dave said, looking over his shoulder at his house as they pulled away from the curb.

“Oh,” was all Agent Marone could say when he looked at Agent Harold who put his hand's palm up in his lap and shrugged his shoulders.

“Take a left at Maple,” Dave said, guiding the Agents to Becky’s house while his house disappeared in the distance.

While Dave was taking a last look at his neighborhood, the Senator was getting ready for his meeting with the Captain and two Detectives.

“How much longer do we have until we arrive?” The Senator asked, looking at his watch and the dirt on his hands and clothes.

“The accident slowed us up a bit, but we should still make it around 11 am, and that was very thoughtful of you to get out and check on the accident victims. I am getting all kinds of tweets and news reports, people were filming you, sir,” the Senator’s assistant Deborah said, while she continued to look at her phone and scroll through it for more updates.

The Senator thought that was an opportunity that he could not pass up, then he wondered why he or no one else had thought of such a stunt before. The Senator was very happy that these unlucky saps had the misfortune to crash on a road he was traveling on. The photo opportunity of a lifetime that gave him more press than he could buy. The Senator even left his pants and shirt dirty and dusty because he knew it would make another great photo op when he arrived to meet the Captain. When the Senator’s S.U.V. pulled up, he was greeted by a mob of reporters. The Senator knew that Mr. Donaldson had leaked that there would be a meeting about the C.C.K. Killer case, but the turnout was even more than he had expected. The recent status he had attained along with the mission of catching the legendary C.C.K. Killer had worked the news media into a feeding frenzy, and now they had a bite, or so they thought. The door wasn’t opened completely, and the questions came flying in.

“Senator! Senator! Is it true there is a major break in the C.C.K. Killer case?” One reporter asked, and he tried to get close to the Senator but got held back by Mike’s arm while Dale and some Police officers cleared a path for the Senator to get into the Police station.

“Senator! I just saw footage of you helping people at the car accident, way to go,” someone said from the crowd, which made the Senator.

“Senator, please just a moment of your time, give us an update,” a reporter the Senator knew from the New York Double Daily was asking.

Once the Senator got to the door, he turned around and put his hands up in the air, almost like a preacher quieting down the church congregation. The Senator stood there for a moment and looked at the mob of reporters before he spoke.

“I understand that you all want to know what is going on, but as you all know, this is an active investigation, and I cannot expose any details of the case. I know that I may sound like a broken record on this subject, but I will update you all as soon as I possibly can, thank you,” the Senator said and he stepped inside the Police station while the crowd of reporters erupted into a volcano of questions, pushing and shoving each other to get closer to the Senator. The Senator looked around the small precinct while he was led toward the Captain’s office, but was stopped short when the Captain came wal
king briskly down the hallway to meet him.

“Senator, it’s great to meet you in person,” the Captain said, holding his hand out to shake the Senator’s hand.

“The pleasure is mine Captain,” the Senator said while he walked alongside the Captain.

“Okay, here comes the dog and pony show, you got your badge shined up?” Hutch asked Sam watching the Senator and Captain walk towards them.

“Yeah, and I washed my ass too, does that get me extra points?” Sam said, and she stood up to meet the Senator.

“Well, these must be the two fine detectives you’ve spoken so highly of during our conversations, and I take it that this young lady is Sam and you are Hutch,” the Senator said as he smiled.

“Nice to meet you, Senator,” Hutch said, and he shook the Senator’s hand.

“Boy, you sure are smooth, you got my vote, that is if you sign this paper to Breeze, she’s my cousin and she loves you to death and we get to sit in the meeting with you and the Captain too,” Sam said and she handed the Senator a pen and two pieces of paper.

“She wants two autographs?” The Senator asked, and he looked at Sam with a bit of a wry smile

“I figured since I was the one going through all the trouble of getting the autograph, I might as well get one for myself, you’re probably going to be our next President and can I have a picture with you too?”

“If I am so lucky to be nominated, I would love to serve our country and do you have a phone to take the picture with?” The Senator asked, feeling good that people were already thinking of him in a Presidential capacity.

“I sure do,” Sam said, and she pulled her phone out and handed it to the Captain, who handed it to Hutch so he could get in the picture as well.

Hutch took the picture and tried to hand Sam her phone back, but she pushed it back at him.

“Okay, now that you’ve photobombed me, I need one with just us,” Sam said, and she put her Locs on and stepped back next to the Senator.

“Can I see those glasses?” The Senator asked, and he held his hand out.

“Sure,” Sam said, and she took off her glasses and handed them to the Senator, who looked at them, and put them on.

“Now let’s take a few more pictures, then down to business, but I’ve always wanted to wear a pair of these glasses.”

  “Really?”

“Oh, yes. Who doesn’t love Dirty Hairy?”

“True. Well, you can have them if you want. I have three more pairs in my desk,” Sam said as the Captain and Hutch looked at her.

  “Excellent, what are these called?”

  “Locs.”

“Locs?” The Senator said a bit puzzled.

“Yeah, it’s short for loco,” Sam said, and she and the Senator walked toward the Captains office talking and left Hutch and the Captain standing there for a few seconds until the Senator and Sam stopped and looked back at them.

“Y’all coming?” Sam said, and she waved her hand to signal for them to come on, the Captain and Hutch just looked at each other, smiled, and followed Sam and the Senator.

While Sam was firmly in control of things at the Police station, Barry was enjoying his flight on the baby Concorde; he would have to make sure Karen and Corey took a flight on this plane, even though it doesn’t go into commercial use for a few years or so. He knew this trip would probably end with someone dying, but this life and the privileges it brought could be intoxicating at times. He hadn’t finished his thought when a lady in a stewardess uniform unlike anything he had ever seen brought him a tray of food.

“Your lunch sir, we were told this would be to your liking, please let me know if you need anything else,” the stewardess said and left.

He looked down at the tray, and there were two Mello Yello sodas, ice-cold, a huge lobster tail and a huge filet mignon steak with steamed vegetables in a buttery garlic sauce. The stewardess had even put a small container of the buttery garlic sauce on the side and a big slice of Sock it to me cake; it was at this very moment that he decided that whatever the Senator needed him to do, he would do it. He realized the ride he was on was for a lifetime, and from where he was sitting, he had it pretty good, and he could always keep Karen living a lifestyle he couldn’t even imagine. He thought to himself Hell was probably his final destination, so he might as well make the most of this lifetime. While Barry was wrapping up his thoughts on his working arrangement with the Senator, and his final eternal destination, the Senator was finishing up his meeting/photoshoot at the Police department.

“You see, we had gone in the same direction, but additional information came to light, and this Barry character was ruled out, but you did great Police Work Detective,” the Senator said while the Captain, Hutch, and Sam looked at him.

“We wanted to disclose this to you personally, so there would be no chance of a leak, but somehow the press got news of our meeting,” the Captain said, looking toward the front door of the Police Station, where the media was camped just outside of those doors.

“I learned a long time ago that some things are going to happen and you can’t beat your head against a wall. This case is the biggest thing in the World of crime, and the fascination people have with this killer only fuels the fire. So a small leak is no big deal, we will continue to move forward, undeterred.”

“I’m sorry for wasting your time Senator, I thought I had cracked the case,” Sam said, looking a little sad, which surprised Hutch and the Captain because Sam rarely showed any emotion.

“I don’t look at this as a waste of time at all Detective, I got a very cool pair of glasses out of the trip, and that’s a win for me,” the Senator said, and he stood up.

“We do appreciate your time, Senator; we know you are extremely busy,” the Captain said, standing up as well.

“It was a pleasure to meet you, sir,” Hutch said, and he shook the Senator’s hand one more time while the Senator was preparing to leave.

“The pleasure was mine, let’s take a few group photos before my security detail whisks me away,” the Senator said, looking at all the Police officers gathered around obviously waiting to meet him and take pictures, and get autographs as well.

The Senator stayed another hour just taking photos and signing autographs for all the Police officers, and he even became one officer’s voice mail messenger, and he even said hello to one officer’s wife as he assured the officer it was quite alright and he took his phone to talk to the young lady. The Senator didn’t realize it until now, but he truly enjoyed being the man or person in the room that everyone wanted to meet. He would have stayed longer because he was enjoying himself and time had gotten away from him, until Deborah, his assistant tapped him on the shoulder and whispered in his ear reminding him of his meeting with Mr. Donaldson. One thing the Senator was sure of when he came back to reality, off the natural high he was on, was that almost everyone in that Police department was going to vote for him when the Presidential election comes up.

“Alright, I guess it is time for me to go. Hopefully one day you fine folks will have me back, and I’ll buy lunch,” the Senator said, and the officers cheered.

“Okay, we have to let the Senator go, we all have work to do, let’s hit it people, and be safe,” the Captain said as the officers started to disperse and go back to work.

The Senator nodded at the Captain as he was led back to the front door and the crowd of reporters waiting outside for him. When the doors opened, the Senator could see the members of the press milling around drinking coffee and chit-chatting amongst each other and instantly stopped and focused their attention on the door as it swung open. The reporters were dropping their coffee cups and almost trampling one another to try to get to the front of the pack so they could try to get an exclusive quote or sound bite from the Senator. The Senator almost did the same thing as before as he raised his hands to quiet the crowd of reporters, then he began to speak.

“I am here because I have been working with this great department of Police officers, and
even though we haven’t caught the killer, I believe we are getting close. We needed to share some information today, that is the only reason I am here, unfortunately, there is no break in the case as of yet. I want to share more with you, but as I stated earlier, this is an active investigation. I have to go. I have a very pressing schedule today, but you will be informed as soon as we know something solid. I am sorry, but I am out of time,” the Senator said and he walked over to his S.U.V. and into what sounded like a thousand questions and lights beaming on him. It was like he was in a tanning booth; the lights were so bright. When the Senator finally sat back in his seat and thought about his meeting with Mr. Donaldson, he couldn’t help but let his mind slip back and think of how much fun he had at the Police station. The Senator hadn’t had that kind of fun in years, in a public setting that is. The Senator was reminiscing a bit too much he thought because he could feel himself smiling and had to get himself back in the game because he didn’t want to seem like a giddy schoolboy from a day of attention when he met with Mr. Donaldson. The ride over to the building where the Senator went to meet Mr. Donaldson the first time gave him just the time, he needed to come back down to Earth and be ready for his meeting.

  Chapter 20

  Roasted Again

While the Senator was feeling good about the day ahead and his meeting with the kingmaker Mr. Donaldson, Barry was wrapping up eating his lunch and Corey, Aunt Ledley and Karen were out and about shopping.

Corey was looking in a few windows and not paying attention to the people walking his way and bumped into two ladies. When he stepped back, he bumped into another lady.

“I’m sorry, are you okay?” Corey said, looking at his latest victim up and down.

“Yes, I’m fine. Hello, this is Helen,” the lady said as her phone rang and she answered it. Then she walked away.

Corey turned his attention back to his first two victims and saw he wasn’t as lucky with them as he was with Helen.
