off their hangers as she collapsed. She looked up at the assaulting chaos through blackened holes that were once her eyes. The crows crawled over her body, covering her like a dark shadow. They tore and fed. They cawed and flapped their wings.
The sound of their wings was like a scorned heartbeat.
Vengeance served, the assault group vanished into the night, following the same path back to the motel. Their formation was fast and did not slow.
Like a stream of bullets, they flew in a line back through the open lobby door and landed back on their mounts and perches. The crows shuddered and cawed. Their eyes glazed over to dull black and the lifeless stuffed birds stood silently on display once again.

Alice sped down the highway, still wearing only a towel. Sitting next to her on the passenger’s seat was the blue fedora. She ran her fingers along the quill of the attached feather and smiled.
