  "Hardly," Alik said.

"Feet first, and you'll be fine," Eamon said. He glanced back and then shook off Alik's hold. "We must run."

"What of the wolves?" Alik asked when they backed away from the edge.

"Fiercely independent creatures. They will think us mad and follow or they will think us mad and stay and fight these creatures another day," Eamon panted and nodded at the cliff. "Shall we?"

Alik nodded and took a deep breath.

  They ran.

WHEN EAMON BECAME AWARE, he was coughing hard enough to cause his chest to ache and the need to breathe was overwhelming. There was sea water in his mouth and two voices hissing at each other and when Eamon opened his eyes, Kane was peering down at him. His fur was dripping wet and Eamon was unsurprised that he had followed them. Above him, it appeared Alik was arguing with a fisherman.

  Then Eamon lost consciousness again.

WHEN HE CAME TO AGAIN, Eamon was wrapped up in thick furs and Kane was snoring next to his head. There were two people by the fireplace in the small house and another sat by the window, mending something by the light of a lamp.

"Alik?" Eamon whispered, his hoarse voice frightening him.

"I'm here," Alik said and Eamon realized that his head was pillowed on Alik's thigh. "I'm here, we're safe for now. Sleep and when you are well, I will explain it all."

  "Edmond-" Eamon started.

"I know. Sleep. And when you wake, you will kill them all," Alik murmured and his eyes were distant as he stared into the flickering fireplace.
