“You’re a menace!” I yelled. “You think you can just break down my door and all is forgiven?”
“No,” he said. “You told me you’d always wanted that wall broken down, and since I’m the super now, I was just taking care of my tenant.”
“Oh.”
Oh. No. No, no, no.
“You’re a liar,” I snapped.
“Not usually,” he insisted. He took a step toward me. “I’ve been thinking a lot this week, Maddie. About what happened. I know I was wrong. And the whole bet thing was a dick move. I own that. I do. But I’m not throwing away what we have over a mistake. I love you. And I know you love me. And this has gone on long enough.”
He was right. It had. I’d just been laying there hoping he’d try again, and here he was. Literally breaking down my walls. No one could resist something like that.
“Okay,” I said.
“Okay?” His eyes widened in obvious surprise.
“Just, don’t lie to me again,” I warned him. “I fucking hate that.”
He rushed across the room and pulled me into his arms, his mouth on mine before I could even draw a breath.
I drowned in his kiss, my chest tight from lack of oxygen and a heart that was about to burst from the joy of being in his arms again. Breaking free, I inhaled sharply, leaning back to meet his gaze.
“You’re a crazy person,” I told him, unable to hide my smile.
“I know,” he agreed. “And it’s gotten worse in the last week. I’ve been absolutely lost without you, Maddie. I don’t know how I fell so hard, so fast, but I’m not living another day without you. I’m in love with you.”
“I’m in love with you, too,” I admitted.
“Thank God.” He reached out and snatched my towel, dropping it to the floor. “Let’s go to bed.”
He scooped me into his arms and carried me to the bedroom, kissing me the whole way, his fingers digging into the naked flesh of my thighs and back. He lay me down gently, gazing down at me for a moment.
“So beautiful.”
“So crazy,” I repeated with a giggle. “Take your clothes off, caveman. I don’t want plaster dust in my sheets.”
Boone stripped quickly, and once again the size of his cock took my breath away. How was it possible that could all fit inside me? I knew it did, and I knew it felt amazing, and I couldn’t wait to experience him breaching me all over again. Every day. For the rest of my life.
He climbed over me, situating his hips between my legs as he recaptured my mouth. I opened to him, our tongues dancing along each other’s, as his hands tilted my hips up. In one strong thrust, he was inside me, the fullness of his girth making my back arch until I had to break the kiss to cry out in pleasure.
“Yes,” he yelled, increasing his pace, fucking me hard and fast. “Scream for me, baby. Come for me. Let me feel your beautiful pussy leak all over my cock.”
The speed and force of him slamming into me, coupled with the words he growled in my ear, pushed me over the edge and within moments I was clutching my fingers into the bedsheets, crying out his name as my muscles spasmed in release, stars exploding behind my eyes and my breath faltering.
His own orgasm followed quickly, his cock jumping inside me as he flooded me with his seed, his body taught and strained over me. Then he collapsed, the full weight of his body dropping onto mine causing me grunt in surprise.
“Sorry,” he mumbled, rolling off me and flinging an arm over my stomach. “Damn Maddie, I’ve missed you.”
“I’ve missed you, too, Boone,” I told him. I rolled onto my side and propped my head up on my hand, looking down at him. “Are you really a billionaire?”
“Yes,” he said. He blew out a quick sigh then jumped out of bed, rooting around on the floor before standing back up, his jeans in his hand. He dug into the pocket and pulled out a box, then got back onto the floor.
“What are you doing?” I squeaked, sitting up quickly and staring down at him.
“Well, hopefully I’m about to make you a billionaire, too.” He opened the box and showed me the biggest diamond I’d ever seen outside of that Titanic movie. “Maddie Taylor, would you do me the absolute honor of marrying me?”
“Is this another bet?” I asked, squinting at him suspiciously.
“Of course not!” He spat, glaring at me. “This is a bonafide marriage proposal you little witch.”
“Oh, well, in that case. Okay.”
“Okay?”
“Okay,” I repeated. “Yes, I’ll marry you.”
He bounced to his feet then on the bed, laying on top of me and kissing me again. I wrapped my arms around his neck and smiled against his lips. When we broke apart, he took my left hand in his and slid the ring onto my finger.
“Are you sure you’re not Batman?” I asked him, turning the ring to watch it sparkle in the sunlight streaming through the window.
“I’m sure,” he said. “But I’ve got lots of cool toys you can play with.”
“I guess that’ll do,” I said. “So, how is this going to work?”
“What do you mean?” He sat up against the headboard and pulled me up to lean next to him.
“I mean, I’ve never been rich before. Do I just move into your castle? Do we hop a jet to the Maldives and get married on a beach? I mean, you lost the Hawaii house, so I guess we’ll have to come up with something else for the honeymoon.”
“My life isn’t really that glamorous,” he said. “I live a big house, I guess, but I wouldn’t call it a mansion.”
“Would I call it a mansion,” I interrupted, giving him a side-eye glance.
“Maybe,” he acquiesced. “But I work a lot and other than my car and a few vacation properties, I don’t throw money around. I’m not a Kardashian. I’m just Boone.”
“Just Boone,” I repeated, shaking my head. “Well, just Boone. What do we do now?”
“Now, we get you out this fucking apartment. You’re so pale you look like you’d glow in the dark. I’ll take you to my house, show you around, introduce you to my asshole brother, and we’ll start planning the wedding. If you want to go to the Maldives, we can do that. Or, we can hop a plane to Vegas tonight. I don’t care how or where we do it, as long as I end up married to you, it will be perfect.”
I cupped his face in my palm and kissed him softly. He was right. It was going to be perfect.
“You did lose the bet, though,” I pushed, hoping to hear that all of that nonsense was over.
“Yeah,” he said. “But when I explained what it had already cost me, Brock agreed to drop the whole thing. He wanted to do the damn talk show anyway, and he’d already bought a house in Hawaii.”
“So then why—”
“Because he’s a dick,” Boone interrupted. “We’ve got some serious sibling rivalry going on, we always have. It drives our mother insane and this isn’t the first time it’s cost us something big. I’m just glad I didn’t lose you over it.”
“Me, too,” I agreed, snuggling against him.
“Besides, I lost my virginity first, so I won that bet.”
“You are such an ass—” His kiss cut off the rest of my diatribe and I melted into his arms. He was probably lying just to get my goat. Probably. Maybe.
Damn it.
Epilogue
~Boone~
Seven years later…
“Maddie, we’re gonna be late!” I called upstairs.
“I’m almost done!” she hollered back. “Hold your horses.”
I heard our son make a neighing sound upstairs and laughed, shaking my head. Glancing at my watch I blew out a sigh. If we didn’t leave in three minutes we’d miss our flight.
Checking my pocket for the tickets again, I looked up at the sound of someone thundering down the steps. Maddie was running quickly toward me and I opened my arms to catch her as she launched herself at me.
“See, right on time,” she chirped, kissing me quickly. “Sorry babe, I wanted to tuck him in. Sasha’s already asleep but Coli
n needed one more story.”
“We’re only going to be gone for a few days,” I reminded her.
“I know, but every time we leave them it kills me.” She looked up the stairs again. “We should have brought them.”
“Next time,” I promised. “They’d be bored out of their minds on this trip. They couldn’t go the awards ceremony anyway and there’s nothing for them to do at the hotel.”
“I know,” she said. “Come on, we’re gonna miss the plane.”
I rolled my eyes, biting my tongue to keep from reminding her that she was the reason we were running behind in the first place.
We went out to the car and I opened her door, closing it behind her before getting behind the wheel and pealing out of the driveway.
With seconds to spare, we hit the tarmac and I tossed the keys to my assistant, who had delivered our bags to the plane and was waiting for us.
“The luggage is loaded, your reservations are confirmed and the pilots waiting,” Janet said.
“Thanks,” I said, rushing past her, gripping tightly to my wife’s hand. “See you in a few days.”
“Bye!” Maddie called, waving over her shoulder as I pulled her up the stairs.
“You’re late,” Mac, the pilot, said as he pulled the steps up.
“My fault,” Maddie told him, smiling brightly. “I didn’t want to leave the kids.”
“I don’t blame you,” Mac said. “Buckle up, we’ve gotta go or we’re gonna miss our window.”
We sat down and clicked in, and within moments we were taxiing down the runway then in the air.
“So,” Maddie said, stretching with a yawn. “What is this award Brock’s getting?”
“It’s something for excellence in broadcasting,” I said, waving a hand dismissively. “Super boring, but he’s really excited about it.”
“Why do you keep saying that?” she asked, narrowing her gaze at me.
“What?” I asked.
“You keep calling boring, aren’t you happy for him?”
“Sure,” I said. “Of course, I am.”
Man, this charade was getting hard to keep up. I’d booked this trip to surprise Maddie, but she’d done her dead level best to ruin it at every turn. First she told me she was going to skip it completely, and I had to actually wrangle my brother in on the surprise, getting him to beg her to come with me. Then we’d been late and almost missed our flight. And now she was pushing me about my excitement for the fake story. Damn, she was too smart for her own good.
“Why didn’t Brock fly with us?”
Okay, she was definitely on to me.
“He had to be there early,” I lied, averting my gaze from hers. Actually, Brock was in Texas gearing up for his first night as color commentator for the football game tonight.
“Uh-huh. Boone, what the hell?”
“Fine!” I snapped, throwing my hands up in frustration. “A man can’t even surprise his wife anymore. Brock isn’t winning shit. Come on Maddie, have you ever seen his show?”
“Yes,” she said. “That’s when I first knew something was up. Then, all of my bikinis suddenly went missing. You said you had the maid pack for me, but I don’t think I need seven bathing suits to go to a broadcast award show in Denver. You’re such a fucking liar.”
“It wasn’t lying. It was telling a non-truth to surprise you with an anniversary trip. It’s totally different.”
“That depends on where we’re going,” she argued. “It better be somewhere good.”
“We’re going to the Maldives,” I said. “You always wanted to go, and since we both had the time, and it’s our seven-year anniversary, I thought I’d surprise you with a trip.”
“What do you mean I’ve always wanted to go?” she asked, confusion plain in her tone.
“The day we got engaged, you said you wanted to get married there,” I explained.
“I was just brining up things that rich people do,” she said, laughing softly. “Babe, I don’t even know where the Maldives is…are…whatever.”
“Seriously?” I stared at her. “Fuck. I could’ve taken you anywhere then.”
“I’m sure it’s lovely,” she insisted. “And I appreciate the gesture. I do.” She swallowed hard, her hand going to her stomach. “How long is the flight?”
“Like thirty-plus,” I said. “We’ll have to stop to fuel up in there somewhere. It’s part of why I wanted to leave the kids home.”
“Well, you missed one,” she said.
“One what?” I stared at her, confused.
“One kid.”
“Are you…are you pregnant again?” I asked, my heart pounding in my chest.
She nodded and I unbuckled my seat belt, falling to my knees in front of her and pulling her into my arms. I pulled back and looked at her, dropping my gaze to her stomach then back to her eyes.
“You’re such a fucking liar!” I teased. “How long have you known?”
“About two weeks,” she said, laughing and hugging me tightly. “I was going to surprise you this weekend.”
“We should go somewhere else,” I said. “I don’t want you on a plane for that long. We’ll do Africa another time.”
“The Maldives are in Africa?” She blinked.
“Well, their between Africa and Indonesia.” I smiled at her. “You’re so attractive and you have many good qualities.”
“Yeah, yeah.” She rolled her eyes. “I suck at geography. Blow me. You suck at surprises.”
“Fair,” I agreed. I stood up and headed for the cockpit. “Hey Mac, change of plans. Maddie’s pregnant.”
“Congrats, boss,” Mac said, smiling up at me. “No Maldives, huh?”
“Not so much,” I agreed. “Can you find an available flight path to Dallas?”
“Sure thing, boss.”
I clapped him on the shoulder before walking back to my seat and dropping into it. I pulled out my phone, texted Janet to score us some Cowboy’s tickets then texted Brock to let him know we were coming.
“Happy anniversary, baby,” I said to her, dropping my phone and sliding forward to take her hands in mine.
“Happy anniversary,” she repeated. “Where are we going?”
“Fifty-yard line for the Cowboys?”
“Fuck yes!” she yelled. She undid her belt and jumped up, falling into my lap and wrapping her arms around my neck. “You’re so much cooler than Batman.”
“I know,” I said. “And you really suck at geography.”
“I do,” she agreed. “But I’m bomb at making babies.”
“Yeah, you are.” I kissed her again.
It felt like the last seven years had gone in the blink of an eye. And yet, every day had been the best day of my life.
I couldn’t wait to hold this baby in my arms. And I couldn’t wait to make ten more kids with Maddie. I loved her so much that sometimes I thought my heart might explode.
“I love you, Maddie Davis,” I told her.
“And I love you, Batman.”
