“You cannot even secure your own chamber from traitors,” said Mirardos as he turned to Hastam and evaporated into nothingness.

Hastam turned, the dim candlelight casting shadows into his sunken cheeks, giving him a skeletal look. He struggled to his feet, looking far more fragile than Trajan had remembered him from the Warrior Games.

“Who are you!? demanded Hastam, coughing as he pointed to the intruder.

“What has happened to you? What have you done?’ asked Trajan, breathing heavily.

“I do what I must to protect my kingdom, my people!” Hastam spat back.

  “At what cost?” asked Trajan.

“Everything,” said Hastam, almost at a whisper.

Trajan turned away, unable to look at the sickly king any longer. He paused, searching his very soul for the action he needed to take.

“Now I remember you…the warrior…the high commander that would defy me. I will have you hung for treason Trajan. Forever known as a traitor,” said Hastam with a snarl.

Trajan lowered his firebrand sword from his shoulder, holding it to his side, igniting it into life. The light cast from it revealing a now terrified look on Hastams face.

“You wouldn’t! I am your king! Guards!” shouted Hastam.

“I will do what I must…for MY kingdom…MY people. I sentence you to death!” said Trajan with an air of authority as he stepped toward Hastam, closing the door behind him.
