“Damn right I do.” She stood. Her gaze darted to the two men who’d been eager to approach her. “By any chance, do you know anything about them? Can’t be too careful, it would seem.”
“The guy on the left is a stock broker. No criminal record. One ex-wife. The man next to him owns three tattoo shops. No previous marriages, no criminal record, and, in fact, he was a cop for three years.”
“Huh. Choices, choices. Thanks.” She slanted a glance at him. “Do you know this much about everyone in your club?”
James shrugged.
She gave him a half-smile. “You’d better love my friend with your whole heart. If you don’t, I can make you sorry. I’m a doctor. That means I can kill you in lots of ways that no one will ever detect.”
Face serious, he told her, “I swear, I love Tess with my whole heart.”
“Okay then…” She smiled at the two waiting men. “Night.” She sauntered away.
James reached for Tess’s hand. His fingers curled with hers. She rose and followed him through the crowd. She wasn’t in the mood to dance or drink or to be surrounded by a hundred strangers that she didn’t know. She was only in the mood for him.
They headed up the stairs to the VIP space. Went straight to the same room they’d used that first night. Tess shut the door behind her. Locked it. She squared her shoulders. “Did you make a decision about Wilde?” About the job offer they’d made him.
“I did. Told them I wanted to work freelance. When the cases are big enough, when they need me, I’ll be there.” His arms lifted and his palms pressed to the door behind her. “But where I want to be, where I need to be, it’s here with you. I’m going to keep running the club and handling the other businesses that I’ve—”
“Collected?” Tess inserted smoothly as her hands slid between their bodies. She unsnapped his jeans. Pulled down his zipper.
“Ah…yes.”
“I would have gone to Atlanta with you.” Her hands were already on his cock. Squeezing him. Stroking him.
“I know…but…oh, God, baby…for now, you want Savannah. I want…yes, yes…” His eyes blazed. “I want to make you happy.”
“We make ourselves happy,” she whispered. Her mouth pressed to the strong column of this throat. A lick. A suck. A kiss. “But just so you know, I’m very happy right now.”
