Charlie blinked hard. He wiped his sweaty forehead with the back of his arm.
“You have no idea what I’ve been through to get this money,” the Canadian fumed. His voice had dropped a few octives, and his eyes went cold. He glared at Charlie without blinking.
“The price just went up, amigo,” Charlie replied. “You leave money here and start walking that way,” he was pointing East, but really didn’t care where they went. “Leave the bag, imbécil. Maybe you get lucky and get more someday.” This time he spoke directly to the Canadian.
The Canadian sighed, zipped the bag closed and took a few steps toward Charlie. The bag dropped with a thud as it hit the ground. The Canadian’s stare was unwavering.
“You sure you want this money?” the Canadian challenged. “You sure you’re willing to reach deep within yourself and find the strength to take it?”
Charlie seemed confused by the question. Of couse he wanted it. Of course he had the strength—he had the friggin’ gun. That was all the strength he needed. He smirked and reached down for the bag. It was heavier than he had anticipated but hoisted it to his left shoulder with little effort. The weight set him slightly off balance. The money was his now.
The Canadian’s hands moved in a blur, timed perfectly with a head feint to the right. Before Charlie could realize what was happening, the Canadian’s right hand came left, grabbing the slide of the pistol. His left forearm came up, as the right hand pulled the gun down. The force of the burly forearm against the thin wrist broke the pistol from Charlie’s hand instantly, and a half-second later Charlie was staring down the barrel of his own gun.
