Nick, Joe and I are boiling mad at Doctor Mark. His stupidity almost got us all killed. Everyone is inwardly perturbed, especially Joe. He didn’t want to come on the rescue mission in the first place. This little adventure has made it clear that a medical degree doesn’t give you common sense.
Doc’s ex-wife Joan is sitting on the couch by herself. She is really shaken up. This is the first time I can see her clearly. She is a beautiful raven haired woman with big brown eyes, perfect nose, pouty lips, perky D cup breasts and she is wrinkle free. I wonder if it is natural or the craftsmanship of her ex-husband. Joan’s probably forty but she could pass for a woman in her late twenties.
Brandon was in a warm embrace with his younger sister Kait. She was silently crying into his chest. This brother sister moment is extremely touching. I had a brother, Michael. I don’t want to think about him or what happened to him. Those thoughts are depressing.
Doctor Mark is pacing the floor. This was his first time getting up close and personal with the deadies. He was a controlled mess. I could see it in his eyes.
She devil, I mean Michelle is posted on the wall. Her eyes flit from a traumatized Joan, her competition, to the distressed doctor.
I feel some form of introductions are in order. I go over to Joan. “Joan.” She looks up at me. “I’m Jesse.”
Joan forces a smile to her perfect lips. Lips that look a lot like my own.
“Would you like something to eat, some water?”
“Yes please.” Doctor Mark’s ex has manners.
“Come to the kitchen.” I give her a friendly wave my way.
Joan stands and follows me through the hallway and into the kitchen.
“We have food, not the greatest choices but I’m sure there’s something in here you’ll eat.”
“Anything will do. We ran out of food in the basement. I really thought we might starve down there.” Joan muttered.
I open two separate cabinet doors so Joan could see some of her tasty options. Her eyes shifted to the boarded up window above the sink.
“They, the zombies tried to get in but some of the guys took care of them.” I explained.
Joan’s eyes darted back to the open cabinet. “The Cheerios,” she points and I grab the box of Honey Nut Cheerios from the cupboard.
“We don’t have milk. You know it all expired weeks ago.” I hand her a bowl from another cupboard. I also get a bowl for me.
“This is just fine. I used to feed my son Cheerios when he was a toddler.”
She follows me to the kitchen table and we sit. I grab two bottles of water from underneath the table and place them on the table. Joan pours cereal into her bowl.
I pour Cheerios into my bowl. “So, you’re Doctor Mark’s ex-wife?” I smirk. I can’t help it.
“Yes that is one of my many titles.” She pushed a handful of Cheerios into her mouth. I did the same.
“Are you one of Mark’s patients?”
“No, no. The blonde guy, Nick brought me here to the house. I was off on my own you know trying to survive when he found me.”
“A lot of Mark’s patients are models. I just thought.” She tried to smile as she chewed.
“I’m glad we have another woman in the house.”
“I appreciate you guys risking your life to come and save us. I know Mark couldn’t have done it alone, if at all. He’s not really that kind of guy. So thank you. I really wanted to get my son somewhere safe and you helped to make that happen.”
“You’re welcome. We look out for each other here.”
“I was so worried. I called almost everyone I could think of and nothing. When I heard Mark’s voice I was so relieved. It was the first time I thought there was, you know, hope.”
“Hope,” I don’t know why I repeated the word.
“When this happened my husband called from work and told me to turn on the news. Something bad was going on. He said he was on his way home and to lock the doors. It all just happened so fast. He… my husband is one of them now.”
This conversation was taking a depressing turn. “So how long were you in the basement?”
“Two weeks, we were upstairs with the windows and doors locked. We were just trying to wait it out. Our cells didn’t work. The internet was down. The cable was out. Some of them crashed through the back door. We run into the basement.”
“I have cooler clothes for you if you would like to change, shorts, tanks.” I noticed she was wearing peach capris pants, a beige t-shirt with an ugly thin brown cardigan and tan ballerina slippers. Fashion was my life. Why would she buy that hideous brown cardi?
“Oh I’m fine.” She smiled warmly.
“Just let me know if you need anything.” Joan was no Michelle. I had grown up a lot now and was able to somewhat determine people’s character. This new world was a place of learning and I was always being taught something about the living more so than the dead.
This night was a hot one. I don’t see how Joan could sit around in that cardigan, when most of us were partially naked. Joe was shirtless, maybe because of the heat maybe because he was showing off his military muscles.
After my talk with Joan I was out of juice. I welcomed sleep so when I was finally alone with Nick in the attic I savored it. I lay down on the air mattress and he came to lie beside me.
“Today was intense.” He whispered in my ear. I would have used the word frightening but whatever.
“Yeah.” I turned my head to look at him. The moonlight through the window gave him a subtle regal glow.
“But we made it out.” He reached over and expectantly glided his fingertips over my belly. It sure felt good. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah, I’m just tired.” An understatement, I was dog-shit tired.”
“Okay.” Nick removed his hand from my belly.
“No.” I grabbed his hand and placed it in mine. “Could you rock me to sleep?”
“Rock you to sleep?”
“With your--” I stopped myself. I felt embarrassed. I didn’t want to say the word penis. That felt too formal. The word cock was too raunchy. Dick was too childish and package always sounded weird to me.
“Yeah I can do that?” He was already pulling down his shorts. He reached over and helped me with mine. “Turn on your side.”
I did as I was told and turned away from him. I felt his warm long fingers rub my ass in small circles. Then he placed the palm of his hand were his fingers were and went into deep massaging circles. I closed my eyes and wondered if rubbing my ass would put me to sleep. It surely seemed possible. I was calm, relaxed and warmly comfortable. I felt like I was drifting away when he slowly ran his hand down my thigh and lifted my leg up to my chest.
Nick ran his hand from my knee down the back of my thigh and his fingers gently grazed the overflow of moisture that settled in between my thighs. Just as soon as his fingers left me they returned. He rubbed his fingertips in my wetness and he submerged one finger deep into me. His finger swirled around inside me and I could feel it brush the contours of my insides. I slowly relaxed into it as I felt myself falling asleep.
I inhaled as I felt him sliding his finger in and out of me. His body was pressed against my backside and his finger was replaced with his concrete cock. I held my breath as he slipped completely inside me. I exhaled when he was a comfortable fit. Then just like I asked, he began to literally rock me with his cock, back and forth with little effort on his part. Or so it seemed to me. My mouth opened and I was panting so quietly I could barely hear myself.
I was transformed into a peaceful tranquil woman. I was drifting and drifting and drifting until there was …
I wake on my own in the middle of the night. I only open my eyes. Nick’s arm is draped over me. Our bodies are still fused together. Maybe being rocked to sleep wasn’t such a good idea in a world without birth control pills. This truly alarms me but I decide not to dwell on it. I remembered that he never pulls out, ever. I was so consumed with just surviving the zombie apocalypse that
the whole thought of procreation just failed to register in my brain. Has Nick thought about the consequences of his actions or is it that he just doesn’t care? Here I am dwelling on something that hasn’t even happened yet. Stop it Jesse! Slow down and chill the fuck out.
I slowly removed Nick’s arm and he rustled around a little but didn’t pull out of me. Seriously? I scooted my ass up and detached from his huge gift. I turned to look at it and it was still pretty big even in its flaccid state. Unbelievable I thought. Before this zombie crap, if I saw him on the street I never would have thought he was packing so much heat. I wonder if Nick knows that his cock is really his lucky Glock.
I stand and look at myself. I feel gross. There is dry sex juice all over the mattress cover and all over my ass and thighs. This all couldn’t have been me. Some of this sex juice has to be from Nick. He had been hibernated inside me for hours. Why are all the fun things like sex so damn messy?
I looked down at Nick, naked from the waist down. My savior was asleep and I smiled to myself. I love him. Damn it, I fucking love him.
I gathered my shorts from the floor and put them on. I grabbed a small thumb-sized flashlight from the floor beside the bed. I turned it on but held it down to the floor. I tiptoed out the attic and down to the second floor. I passed the master bedroom. The door was open. I flashed my light inside and Joan, Kait and Brandon were asleep in the king size bed together. Joan was still in that ugly cardigan. The door that housed Naveen was closed.
I made my way downstairs and Michelle was asleep on the couch. Doctor Mark was reclined back and asleep in a huge reclining chair. I crept down the hall and ended up in the kitchen.
Joe was sitting at the table holding a thumb-sized flashlight in a book, a real thick book.
“Who is fuck is up this late?” Joe whispered as he turned to eyeball me. “Vicky.”
“Jesse.” I corrected.
“It’s fuckin’ four in the morning.” He grudgingly informed me.
“I was thirsty and I had to pee.” I explained it to him like he was an officer of the law.
Joe pointed his mini flashlight at my face and I pointed my mini flashlight at his face in protest. He reached under the table and grabbed a Capri-Sun and handed it over to me.
“Drink, pee, do not flush and take your ass to sleep.” He hissed.
“You read?” Joe with a book?
Joe flashed me again with his light torch. “I will shoot you.”
That was my cue to skedaddle. I went upstairs and straight to the bathroom. I took care of my business and realized there was no toilet paper on the roll. I reached under the sink and grabbed a fresh roll. After I wiped, I went to flush the toilet and caught myself. With the Capri Sun in one hand and the flashlight in the other I went to the attic stairs. I stopped. I had a strange thought. It was a stupid thought but I knew there would be no way I could sleep until I saw for sure. I went to the master bedroom and peeked in.
I entered the room. Joan, Kait and Brandon were fast asleep or so it seemed. Kait was in the middle. Her Hello Kitty blanket was balled up under her face. Brandon was almost hanging off the left side. Joan was asleep on the right side of the bed. Why was she wearing that cardigan when everyone else was in sleeveless t-shirts? I’m far too curious for my own good. This is a major flaw in my personality that I’ve accepted a long time ago.
I walked like a ballerina over to the side of the bed where Joan rested. I bent over her and noticed she was sweating profusely. I raised the left sleeve of her cardigan. She didn’t move. I was relieved to see there was nothing there. I wanted to leave the room at once but curiosity made me go for her right sleeve. My fingers brushed her skin and she was burning up. Her skin was on fire. No wonder she was sweating. Damn there it is. Right there on her about six inches above her wrist, a bite mark. I covered her arm and backed out of the room. I stood in the hall, thinking. Joan looked so peaceful but she was infected and I don’t know what to do.
I thought about closing the bedroom door but then I thought of Kait trapped in the room with a deadie. Could we please just have a single twenty-four hour period of peace? This new world sucks ass.
It will be daylight soon. I don’t want to wake anyone with this but what am I supposed to do? I should tell Joe. He’s awake. He lives for this shit. If I go back downstairs to the kitchen, I leave Nick alone, asleep in the attic by himself unaware of what’s going on.
Joan didn’t look as sickly as the other deadies. Her transformation may be a bit slower than the others. There was a bite mark but there wasn’t a chunk of skin and flesh missing from her arm. She had the fever but she still looks like a live human person. I can’t just stand here in the hallway without a weapon. What to do? What to do? What the fuck to do?
I went back to the attic and got my Colt. I thought about Nick’s Glock but he might freak if he wakes up and sees it’s missing. I decided to just sit on the steps of the attic and listen for any sound that was abnormal. That’s not true. I just listened for any sound abnormal or not. I thought I was tired but my anxiety kept me awake. I sipped my Capri Sun and waited until daylight, sunrise or someone to wake up.
Sunrise came before I knew it. I heard Nick stirring around in the attic. He came up behind me as I sat on the stairs.
“What are you doing out here?”
“I’ll tell you.” I stood to meet his eyes.
“Move over, I got to go.” Nick whispered.
I moved to the hall to let Nick go by. He went into the bathroom. I went a few paces to the master bedroom and peeked in. Joan, Kait and Brandon were very much asleep. I was relieved. I watched a moment, backed out the doorway and dumped into Nick.
“What are you doing?” He frowned.
“Let’s go to the attic.” I took his hand and he followed me up the stairs. We both sat in the two vacant chairs by the window.
“Why do you have a gun?”
I reached behind me and removed the Colt from the small of my back. Nick must have noticed it as he walked the stairs behind me. “Protection,” I placed the Colt under my chair.
“What happened?” Nick pressed his lips. He was getting pissed even though I hadn’t told him anything yet.
“Joan has a bite mark.” I said it and it wasn’t as difficult as I thought it would be.
“What?” Nick stood up so fast I felt the breeze blow off his body. “How do you know?”
“I saw it.” I felt a need to say more. “With my eyes.” Well obviously.
Nick began to pace the attic floor. “You should have waked me up.”
“I know. Please go look for yourself. The bite is on her right arm near her wrist.” I needed him to see it as well. I needed that because sometimes I felt like I was going crazy. This harsh world is changing me into a gun touting potty-mouthed psycho. I need that extra signature on the Joan’s infected contract. I need it for the sake of my sanity. “Please go look.”
“Okay, you stay here.” Nick grabbed his Glock from under the air mattress. He was out of the attic before I could blink.
I sat there alone and I was overwhelmed with the need to cry. I was tired of being this tough chick. I’m not her. I’m a supermodel. This life is not real. This is a long lingering nightmare. Could this be some imaginary world I cooked up? It’s more likely that I was in a car accident and suffered a brain injury. Yes that’s more likely than a zombie apocalypse. I rest my eyes. If I’m in a coma, it wouldn’t hurt.
Nick returned to the attic with Marine Joe in tow. Their domineering presence jeered me out of my trance. Shit this is not a dream. This is real. I’m not crazy. I’m tired as shit.
“So you told Joe?”
“Yeah.” Nick said it like I was a moron.
“Yeah Vicky, how come you didn’t tell me early this morning?”
“I don’t know. I thought I could handle it.”
While I sat in my chair Joe stood over me and leaned in close to my face. I was feeling pretty crowded. He was all in my personal space. Even though Nick w
as standing behind Joe, I felt a pang of fear.
“Listen here, any threat against anyone of us in the group you report to me or Nick immediately. Do you understand me?” He quietly yelled in his Marine drill sergeant voice.
I just stared in his cold blue eyes. I was too afraid to respond. Damn he was scary when he wanted to be.
“Do you understand me?” He leaned in further and I could smell his breath. Weird, it smelled like peppermint candy.
“Yes, I understand.” My lip quivered as Joe backed away with his menacing scowl.
Joe walked to the far corner of the room. Why did Nick let him berate me like that? I looked up at Nick and he had a smug smirk on his face. Did Nick put Joe up to this? Regardless it worked. At this very moment I will make a mental vow to never hold information from Batman and Robin.
Nick’s feet scuffed up the hardwood as silence filled the attic. Pacing must help him think.
“Jess, go get Doc.” Nick finally said something. Why me? I thought but didn’t dare say. “Bring him up here?”
“Yeah.” I didn’t want to bring him up but at least I wouldn’t have to be the one to tell him. Nick was always the mouth piece. In my previous life I was a supermodel not a spokesmodel. Public speaking is not my forte.
I left Nick and Joe in the attic and I went downstairs to wake Doctor Mark. He wasn’t in the living room. I glanced at the circular wall clock. It was seven thirty-four. I went to look for him in the kitchen and he was there. He was rubbing his eyes and downing a bottle of water. His thick dark hair was a tousled mess.
“Morning,” I said as I entered.
“Good morning Franjessca.”
I tried to smile and failed. “Yeah.”
“We had a really rough day yesterday.” Doctor Mark seemed to have recovered from yesterday’s events.
