“Murder,” Mary announced and then waited for the sky to fall.
John gently pulled Mary’s face up to his. “Murder?” he asked.
“Poisoned pie…bad guys…deceit…betrayal…bank robberies…creepy cellars…attics…all right here in Pineville…sweetie…dear…honey.” Mary plastered an innocent smile to her beautiful face. “But think on the bright side…at least I solved the murder before you arrived home.”
“Solved the murder…you?” John rubbed his forehead. “Mary, honey, what have you been doing while I was away fighting in the war?”
“Well…solving murders,” Mary told John and then quickly grabbed his hand before John could explode. “It all began with a foreign spy and the death of a local farmer,” she explained and walked John out into a light falling snow and a white world of mystery and wonder coated with a hidden danger that was lurking in every sleeping shadow.
John listened to Mary talk as he walked next to his lovely wife. He had assumed Mary would simply run the newspaper and write the same old boring stories—instead, he quickly learned his wife had become a regular crime solver. What John didn’t know, as he climbed into a strange car instead of Mary’s old car, was that his wife’s troubles in Pineville were over but were about to continue in California.
Mary, assuming she had handled her last murder case, drove her husband home through the snow chattering away, having no idea what troubles were awaiting her in California. And poor Betty wouldn’t be far behind.
