Chapter 13
"Do you think she knows?"
Jason looked at Rocky and smiled. He'd been smiling already, glad to see her. The feeling he'd always known her warmed him. And scared him.
"She knows something. I don't know what it is, but she nailed us both, don'tcha think?"
Rocky shook her head in disbelief.
"Wa-ya sounds so much cooler than wolf. Definitely better than werewolf."
Jason laughed out loud.
"What do you think she means by us being pieces of something?"
"I don't know. Maybe she sees the other wolf too. Maybe she's crazy."
Rocky smiled at the two cups of coffee he held. Then she laughed because he seemed oblivious to them.
"You thirsty or is one of those for me?"
He nodded as if he'd just woken up.
"It was for Anne, but she never touched it. Lots of sugar."
"Mmmm. Put some milk in it and you got a deal, wa-ya."
Jason held the door open to invite her in and she paused.
"Any chance I could get that to go? I have to work. I changed some of my shifts around at work for the next few days so I can change comfortably. I just told them I'm a real bitch during my period and they seemed cool with it."
"It happens during your period?"
"Convenient huh? Actually I don't really have a period. The doc says I can't conceive."
He looked solemn for a second.
"I'm?sorry, Rocky."
"Don't be. I'm not sure I'd want to pass this on, ya know. If it's genetic."
"What if that's not how it works?" he said.
She shrugged and seemed distant for a second. Jason stepped inside and put a splash of milk in her mug.
"I don't have a lid for this."
She smiled.
"It's fine. I can drive, talk on my phone and put on makeup all while being a vicious, flesh eating creature. Think I can handle a cup of coffee."
"Just be careful. We might be the last of our kind."
He watched her walk to the car. She raised the cup and took a drink. Then she rested it inside a cup holder that hung from the dash above the radio and winked at him. Jason nodded and waved as she backed up. The radio screamed through the open window.
It was nice to have someone who understood him. Someone he felt he'd known forever.
